Public Moving Services is a moving broker, though they present themselves as a moving company.  (The difference is that they "say" they don't own their own trucks.)

We are an older couple moving from California to Kentucky to be with our grandchildren.  My husband is disabled.  He stayed in California to pack and move us so that I could begin a new job.

We found this moving company whose prices appeared to be not much more than it would cost to move us ourselves.  Since moving ourselves would mean my husband would have to make at least two trips across the country and I was concerned for his health, we decided to bit the bullet and pay for movers.

The first "binding estimate" that we were given was expensive (for us), but doable.  A few days prior to the move, we were told that the "estimate" had doubled.  Since we had over 400 boxes (and a few bits of furniture that had been passed down through the family), we couldn't just begin to try to move it ourselves within our allotted time frame.  So, I thought we'd go ahead and pay.

When the movers actually showed up, they brought too small a truck, so loaded 1/2 of our things and left. The next day (now that they had possession of half of our things), they presented a contract which brought the total to almost 4 times the original bid, from about $5K to over $20K.  My husband didn't know what to do except sign the contract and hope for the best.

Once my husband got back in Kentucky, we began to call the company to try to arrange for a delivery date.  No one would answer our phone calls. When they did talk to us, they refused to even give us the location of our belongings.  We have finally had to file reports with all kinds of federal agencies including the FBI.

There are literally at least dozens of families in the same situation we are:  massive overcharging, failure to deliver, etc.  We are at our wit's end.
