I was so outraged about you not believing "Carmen" another consumer that filed a report about public storage and there lock policy. The name calling "really", now????
I've been at Marina Public Storage for quite some time now, and I could not tell you how many locks they have made me buy!!!  because it has happened so many times!,  and  "NO"  you can not bring your own lock!!!!!  You have to buy only the one they sell!!! They tell you that you can not use or bring your own.  They break yours off for being even a day late. I had two storage's there at one time. It is outrages!  I finally emptied one, and every time I finally got paid up and ready to start moving my stuff out, they throw at me late fees that are crazy!  and get this",   on every single rent payment receipt it states that my payment method: Is  (In Advance!).  Another issue I have is the rent raises, and how it went from under a hundred dollars every month and is now $262.00, So on 05/31/2011 , I could only pay $ 240.00, My receipt  reads as follows  Rent:$262.00 Rent Tax:$0.00 Insurance: $0.00 Next Payment Due:  05/01/2011 Payment Method: In Advance. Next it reads as follows> Previous Balance Rent $262.00 Credits $0.00 Payment $240.00 Remaining balance $22.00 Fees $39.30 Total $301.00 Payment $240.00 Remaining balance $61.30. Did you get that  My rent receipt date reads 05/31/2011 11:55:52 AM, than it says Next Payment Due 05/01/2011, I really don't understand that either! I do have other receipts with different fees for the locks that they made me buy!!!! and at one time they were charging for two locks per storage unit!
So if your saying they can't and don't make you buy there locks, because you know! "Well I hate to bust your bubble"!!!!!   You are wrong!!!!!

A Little Thing Called Contract Law, Folks

AUTHOR: jlc33 - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 10, 2011

Granted, there's not much I can say about the two comments above as one is a homophobic rant and the other is so incoherent I doubt its author would pass a literacy test. But I can say the following in response to the comment above:

There is not really anything you can say to mitigate the consumer lack of action in paying timely rent

Let me draw your attention to a little invention called contract law. It's been around for several thousand years. The Public Storage contract precludes cutting off locks if payment is made a day late. If the insurance company, which is bound by contract law to pay claims for stolen merchandise found out PB was doing this at one of their locations, it would have a fit.

PB can't take such drastic action unless you're at least 60 days delinquent, I believe. Feel free to read the contract, research the issue, look at PB's website, etc. if you don't believe me.Therefore, the lock-cutting/payment late practice described above isn't any more legal than the bank foreclosing on your house if your mortgage payment is a day late.

Perhaps you believe the bank should be able to foreclose on your home if your mortgage payment is a day late, but the law of the land doesn't agree with you.

To the Original Poster

I'm not responding further as it appears some people would rather post silly statements and call other people names instead of either researching the issue at hand or bothering to read the posts they're supposedly responding to. However, this exchange proves that customers are told different things about locks, insurance, and other issues at different PB locations. Therefore I urge you to file a complaint with the BBB if you believe PB's actions are a violation of your contract or illegal criminally speaking.

What do you have to lose?

Nothing Wrong In Their Practices

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 10, 2011

jlc, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the practices you described and what the OP described.  They must place the facility's insurance on their goods, and customers must buy the storage facility's own locks.  What you'll find is that many homeowner's insurance policies will not fully cover everything stored in a facility; they will up to a point.  If there is a loss, the facility owner then is on the hook for the rest.  In the case of the locks, the facility's insurance won't pay on any losses unless the facility's locks are in place.

Yes, there is a control issue in place and all the risk is on the facility.  All of it.  Asking the facility to do everything in its power to enforce its ability to safeguard the items people place into their hands is hardly unreasonable.  Further, as James commented, the facility also has the right to take drastic action if someone is late with a rent payment.  Again, it becomes the renter's responsibility to pay rent on time.

There is not really anything you can say to mitigate the consumer lack of action in paying timely rent, the storage facility's right to make certain the goods are safeguarded, etc...

Insurance is Required According the PB's Website

AUTHOR: jlc33 - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 10, 2011

To the commenter above:

PB does require consumers to buy insurance per it's guidelines here: .publicstorage.com/how-storage-works.aspx#notice

Given the tone and content of your post, I'm guessing some poor customer service rep. got tired of dealing with you and nixed the insurance.

James, you are DEAD WRONG and you are a drama queen.

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 10, 2011

First of all, James, Public Storage CANNOT and DOES NOT "force" you to buy their insurance.

That act would be illegal.

It appears that you are  just a weak little California q***r who cannot just say no.

Second, they cannot force you to buy their locks, and they cannot legally cut yours off unless the default provions in your contract have been met.

How do I know this?

I used PS for years in multiple states.

I have endured the high pressure sales pitch on the insurance, and have in every instance turned it down.

You have the legal right to do so, and to be totally uninsured, or to get your own insurance elsewhere.

I have also endured the high pressure sales pitch to by their locks, which I turned down in every instance.

Mine are just as good, and they do not need access to MY unit.

Under the law, you own all of the rights to that unit when your rent is paid, and nobody else can demand access.

If they demand to have a key to your unit, legally they assume responsibility for your contents.

Promotional move in rates have been a business model for PS for many years, but the regular rates thereafter are always clearly disclosed up front.

No rip off here.

Grow a pair.

Late Payment Isn't a Reason to Rob Consumers Blind

AUTHOR: jlc33 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, July 09, 2011

The consumer comment above is actually correct - you can
quickly go from paying $1 month to needing a second job to pay all the fees associated
with renting a tiny storage space in any storage facility.

I've been with Public Storage for a couple years and find many of their
business practices, including low-balling people with initial rates
ranging from $80-$400 that are quickly raised dramatically (20%-30%),
unsavory. If the lender for your car lease or mortgage could raise your
car or mortgage payment 20% with 30 days notice, I think people
would be upset. I'm not even factoring in the ethical issues regarding
the teaser $1-$8/month rate that gets people in the facility in the
first place.

However, I have, gasp, paid my bill more than one day after the due date
and never had anyone threaten to cut my lock. I would think the
lock-cutting practice would bother Willis, the company through which
Public Storage makes people buy insurance whether they need it or not.
Insurance will have to pay a claim even if your stuff is stolen because
you're a day late and the lock got cut. Furthermore, I've actually read
the entire the contract and it says nothing about cutting locks unless
you're so delinquent they sell your stuff at auction.

Public Storage isn't my favorite company but I was treated nicely and also
offered the option of buying my own lock initially.

Public Storage does have a history of answering Better Business Bureau
complaints. I would file a complaint at bbb.org because it sounds like
you have less-than-typical complaints about your particular public
storage branch that should be addressed.

Personally, I doubt the locks are being cut. I suspect that someone is pocketing all this money they're supposedly spending on new locks.

The solution is simple

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 19, 2011

If you are late they cut off your lock..then DON'T be late.

If you are late they charge you a late fee..then DON'T be late.

Really it is that simple.  Perhaps you need to find another part time job to pay for your storage unit(s)?.  Or just go ask your parents for the money, because you do sound like a spoiled brat.

Welcome to the REAL world.
