I received a letter in the mail, along with a check for $4,550.24 for my 11 year-old daughter stating that her name was randomly selected from Reader's Digest, Publisher's Clearing House, and other participating department reatial stores. It instructed me to call one of two people to have the check activated and that I should deposit it right away. On the bottom of the letter, it said I could chose option A (accept check and deduct D.P. fees), B (don't accept check and pay fees by self), or C (no thanks). I have to tell you, seeing a check (that looked genuine) for that amount of money is exciting and very tempting. I called to ask about the options and the claim manager, Frank Gibson, said it'll be better to deposit the check and pay the fees. Once I did that, I would then receive a check in 3-5 business days by courier. I went back and forth with my bank. When we both tried to call and verify funds with HSBC Bank, they stated that they couldn't do so and couldn't verify if the check was real or not. The check ended up being returned for non-payment. I tell you, in tough times like this especially when you have kids, is not a time to mess with people's heads. I don't have the spare dime for sinisters who have nothing better to do but scam people to try and screw me over on my money! Lawyers, police, investigators, etc. need to start looking into the people who do this and take them down.
