Our group was commissioned to review various “doo-wop” style motels throughout Wildwood in an effort to categorize and rate the overall vacation experience Wildwood has made famous for decades. Any prospective patrons looking to stay at the Quebec Motel (A.K.A. “The Quebec By The Sea Luxury Resort”) should read this before booking a stay as you may be in for an extremely unenjoyable, and annoying experience to say the least. Calling themselves a luxury resort is an absolute joke.

While the management personnel were friendly, accommodating and professional, various forms of harassment by the hotel’s security staff made the experience completely unbearable to my group (all legal adults - ages 25).

The security staff stood on post at the staircase, and on all three levels of the motel 24 hours a day, constantly screaming and hollering at adult patrons, including our group. Their abuse of power occurred mostly during the times which management wasn’t present, but almost seemed like a game to them while they were able to exert control over the motel’s patrons.

Here’s some things you should know about the Quebec:

If you’d like to enjoy a barbeque on the motel’s patio area during a hot summer day – forget it. You are prohibited from consuming any beverage, including (and I’m not kidding) water.  The motel’s security screamed at our group for consuming water outside of our hotel room, and by the pool.  You can absolutely forget enjoying a cold beer as well, regardless of if it’s consumed in a cup or other container.

I also have to make mention of one incident where the security guard came over to the front of our room, yelling at us, and physically kicking over our cups/glasses to ensure there was no alcohol in them. And this was just one of the incidents… Here’s a few more:

  • They attempted to force us into our room at midnight.  Alleging that adult patrons were not allowed to sit outside the room and enjoy the breeze due to the recent enactment of the “Animal House” ordinance – which has absolutely nothing to do with being outside, and applies specifically to underage kids throwing loud parties and consuming alcohol on a premises, none of which applied to our group.
  • They constantly shined extremely bright flash lights in our faces in observance of what we were doing – while in almost all cases we did nothing but sit there.
  • They demanded to check our luggage for possession of alcohol, even after presenting identification to security personnel confirming our age.

While it is certain that any hotel accommodating the younger generation has to pay close attention to what’s going on to ensure that no incident or illegal activity occurs for liability purposes, the Quebec takes this responsibility to completely unnecessary levels by handling adults in the same manner they do teenagers.

If you’re looking for that traditional, fun-filled vacation you’ve experienced throughout your life during the summer in Wildwood, it is strongly recommended that you stay at a different hotel because everything you do will be observed under a microscope, and questioned – regardless of your age or activities.  We were harassed ALL the way up until the point we checked out of the hotel.

In light of the above, we had absolutely no enjoyment on our vacation while at the motel, and the Quebec’s security personnel treated patrons as though the motel was a maximum security prison.  They provided absolutely no level of respect for the adult vacationers, and continued on an egotistical power-trip throughout the weekend.

Management's Response Inaccurate.

AUTHOR: Matthew Dunleavy - ()

POSTED: Saturday, April 12, 2014

It's pretty clear that you're simply responding to this because you found that the rip-off report was ranked high on search engine keywords and would ultimately be viewed by potential guests - pretty convenient that you find it during the promotional period before the vacation season starts.

While I appreciate the fact that you're trying to justify the actions on behalf of your staff a year after the incident, your rebuttal is completely inaccurate.  Upon checking in, the VERY FIRST discussion I had with the person at the front desk was whether we would be harassed by security in the hotel over alcohol, as we were all well over the legal drinking age, and we were completely aware that prom students were checking into local hotels.  The gentleman behind the desk advised me that it wasn't an issue as we were of age, and upon proving we were of age to security we wouldn't have problems. Furthermore, there was an intentional separation of vacationers and students. Students were placed in separate isolated areas, while families were situated on the first floor.

Additionally, this wasn't a matter of "playing by the rules".  I would've certainly had no issue with security provisions had they not completely disrespected us every opportunity they could.  They were on a power trip, plain and simple.  For example, on the second floor toward the area near the office, an elderly couple occupied a room.  They had alcohol out on the balcony in a MUCH MORE exposed manner than we did – case of beer in public view, with cans in broad daylight.  They were not harassed or even approached.  When your security personnel was prompted with the question of why they didn't harass them as well, their response was "I don't need to answer that. Who do you think you are?"

Lastly, on the subject of the animal house ordinance, your interpretation of the law is incorrect.  The animal house ordinance was constructed for the purpose of preserving the quality of life in residential vacation districts whereby there exists both owner-occupied properties and renter-occupied properties with absentee landlords that allow tenants to trash a vacation rental, leaving the seasonal residents responsible for the mess.

The bottom line is that your security staff was disrespectful and were clearly full of themselves.  We weren’t the “animals” upstairs. We were adults who wanted to play cards on the lower balcony which was not visible to the general public. I approached who was believed to be one of the owners (a very peaceful elderly woman), and she also stated that what we were doing wasn’t a problem.  Once she left, the security was back to running the place like a prison.

Had the staff pulled us aside in a professional manner and explained what their reasoning was, I would’ve had no problem with it. Instead they felt the need to keep “flexing” when the owner wasn’t around.  In fact, I can recall a moment when the one guard (the allegedly retired police officer, an older African American guy) came over and KICKED one of our cups over, grabbed a cup out of my associate’s hand and dumped out before realizing the cup did NOT CONTAIN alcohol.

My family has been staying at that hotel for years, along with other close friends of ours.  I watched my father do the very same thing I was attempting, at that very same hotel as a child. I’m not a crazy college kid looking to trash a hotel room.  I’m the owner of one of the fastest growing companies in the Philadelphia area (2013 Philadelphia 100 - #35). Instead of renting a nice quiet place, I chose your hotel for that nostalgic wildwood vacation.  I was beyond disappointed. My partners and I are the element of people that help keep Wildwood the type of place want to come to.

Summarily, this isn’t a bash on the administration of the hotel – as the gentleman at the front desk was more than accommodating, and the woman I believed to be the owner of the hotel was also very nice, and had no issue with what we were doing. This was merely meant as a means of pointing out a flaw in your operation.  Once management isn’t around, your staff think they own the place and make it a VERY unenjoyable place for guests.

Playing by the rules....

AUTHOR: QuebecMotel - ()

Mr. Dunleavy,

I’m sorry to hear about your poor experience at our facility. One of our main goals is to make sure everyone has a great time in Wildwood. We have been serving visitors to Wildwood for over 25 years and have had a great many happy customers come through over the years.  Please find us on booking.com and read some reviews of actual paying customers;  Wildwood is not for everyone but believe it has something for everyone if you’re looking for it.

It seems unfortunate that your stay with us occurred during one of our after prom weekends; your group appears to be the only one booked that weekend with anyone even over 21.  As a matter of doing business during the prom season (late May to mid June), we typically do not allow guests over 21 to book a reservation in advance if we are also accommodating a large group of after prom teens at the same time.  The only exception to this is if a guest “walks-in” without a reservation and can see the prom environment for themselves (many people have no idea), and then,

further agrees not to mingle with the prom goers and to comply with security requirements (they can be more or less stringent depending on the tone of the guests by in large and relative to the time of day).  I’m confident our office staff advised your group of these circumstances prior to your acceptance of the room.  All guests during these weekends are held to the same standard since a singular exception will result in the other guests wanting the same exception.

As you had mentioned, the “Animal House” ordinance targets properties with loud and disorderly tenants.  During after prom season loud and disorderly conduct can occur for a variety of different reasons, all of which we are charged with the prevention of. Our property can house about 220 persons, and usually does so during post prom season.  With such a large volume of teens in one location [most guests are 17 (with parental permission), 18, or 19] loud and disorderly is not too far off.  It can come by way of a large group “talking,” a domestic dispute (sorry guys and gals, it happens sometimes), or it might be brought on by some type of inebriation.

As you are likely aware, the city and the State of New Jersey have stringent rules on both the possession and/or consumption of alcohol by anyone under the age of 21 (Chapter III police regulations 3-3.1-3.3). All properties in the area are faced with these same challenges during the after prom season and need to take every means possible  to mitigate it and still make sure everyone has a good time without getting in trouble. No matter the reason, we and our security staff have to be vigilant, take precautions, and react appropriately as the safety of our guests is paramount.

In recent years the “Animal House” or “Rowdy House” ordinance has been more strictly enforced and often results in fines and charges to the guests in violation and the property owners alike. On top of that, when law enforcement is called to a property, they often take more broad, sweeping measures and can sweep up secondary offenders. This can have very serious consequences for our young guests looking to their futures (talk to your parents about this one). Furthermore, the city has been withholding the mercantile of license of properties with multiple offenses. We are very happy to report that we are not one of those properties and value the safety of our young guests, and make every effort to keep them out of harm’s way.

We are sorry for you were not able to enjoy yourselves fully during your stay, but welcome you to try us again outside of the prom season when we have a less supervised atmosphere. Obviously, we encourage you to make advance reservations in the future to avoid such clientele mismatches.
