We only have basic phone service with Qwest, unfortunately there is no competition in our town and we have to stick with these criminals.
They use some kind of creative accounting to bump up their bills - one would think that it is very simple: a monthly service charge + taxes that would remain more or less the same. We paid the same amount for our "basic phone service" (around $ 27,-) but from month to month Qwest added more and more $$$$ without explaining why. When we called them they would just bulls**t us without making it clear where the "balance forward" was coming from. Yesterday we received a "Disconnection notice" that told us to pay $ 60,- within 2 (two !!)days or our phone line would be disconnected.
The notice said: "A breakdown of your charges is shown below."
Below it said: "Qwest regulated services........$ 60.08" That was the whole "Breakdown".
We called their customer service again, they are trained in bulls**tting customers over the phone and telling them all kind of nonsense until they give up.
We don't have any other choice than to pay, similar to those business owners who enter into "agreements" with certain individuals with loaded weapons. We know one thing for sure: Qwest lost us forever as a customer, even if we still have phone service with them. The day when COX is going to come into this town is going to be the last day with Qwest.

nonsense speculation: we never missed or were late on any payments -

I am pretty sure that the comment that we probably missed a payment originates from a Q-West public relations person. If that would be true the answer could have been: "You missed your january payment" or "you were late with your payment when you paid the xyz bill..."
Don't bulls**t me, dear fellow ripoff user. i made it clear that we never missed to pay any bill and that we called numerous times without ever receiving a clear answer.
Q-West billing employees are trained in giving bulls**t answers in order to make customers feel that they are too stupid to understand their bill. We believe that a customer has the right to understand at least his telephone bill and that a telephone company should design a bill the way that even the most stupid customer can understand it.
these guys have a monopoly in certain places of this country and they know that it does not matter if a customer agrees, understands or does not understand. You don't have any other choice than to pay.
Interesting that our friend in Mesa (where COX is available) receives all kind of special offers like for example 50% off for Q-West customers, offers that this company has never made in this town since there is no competition. they have also taken care that there won't be any competition, the same like Mediacom, the only cable provider you can get here. Q-West charges over $ 40.- per month for DSL services while you can get the same in Mesa (about 5 minutes from here) for $ 10,-)

balance fwd charges don't tally with anything else
AUTHOR: Jill - (U.S.A.)

Hi have to disagree with the balance fwd being part of the complainer 'forgetting to pay his bill' when i forgot to pay my dishnetwork bill, the next month's bill was just doubled with the dates for service billed clearly stated. not with qwest. i cancelled my service and from the bill, i had $0 due, the next month, lo & behold, no service (I luckily found another carrier in a rural area) from qwest but I had a 'balance foward of $245+' + 'new charges' of $145 including optional private line services which I never signed up for, for a line which was disconnected. of course even with a confirmation # for my cancellation, qwest 'could not find' my cancellation request. it was only after numerous complaints to the FCC that qwest removed the new charges even though they refused to admit their scam. i am still fighting the mystery 'balance fwd' charge. case is currently under review by colorado public utlilties commission.

Most likely you missed a payment somewhere along the line. If you had basic service and weren't using any other service that would make the amount vary such as ld, then you'd expect to pay the same amount every month. You probably paid a bill late, close to the print date of the next month's bill. When you got the next bill, which could have been just days after you paid, you might have assumed you'd taken care of the bill. Its really easy to get confused with that sort of stuff.

grandfather clause
AUTHOR: Mikeal - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, February 08, 2006
First of all this complaint does not seem legit at all. Qwest only uses the grandfather method to help those customers who have a price on their current account, for a product that they were originally promised a set price would not increase, maintain. Their are two very simple rules with the grandfather method. You cannot move your service from one location to another and keep the old rate. Two, you cannot get rid of that particular grandfathered product and then get it back once you figured out the mistake you made.
Also as far as rates and rate increases go, you can move anywhere in the world and have any company in the world and your rates will always eventually increase. Thats life! You will never find a company that lasts in todays markets that keep their rates the same all the time. The company that tried that would not survive. The only thing that it sounds like you confronted was maybe a bad case of customer service, MAYBE... In that case, a little tip, ask for a supervisor, and if you still can't figure it out take a class in basic ecinomics.
p.s. Just a little example for you. If rates never increased and always stayed the same we would still pay .10 per gallon of gas.
