I bought a soldering station from a RadioShack retail store May 2013 located in the Topanga Mall for $59.99. I also bought a one year protecton plan for the unit for $11.99. Needless to say the unit broke in one week.

I was working on an important project so I needed a fast replacement. I thought the protection plan meant that I could bring the unit back and have it exchanged for the same. It is just common sense, right? How naive...

It turned out that I could not have the unit replaced on the same day because I would have to wait to get the eGift card by email from RadioShack. I had to continue working on my project, so the sales reps told me I could buy another one and then come back to them when I get the eGift card and they will refund me the money. On top of that the sale on that unit was over, and I would have to pay the full price which is $89.99. They said, don't worry, when you come back with the eGift card, we will return you the price difference as well.

Today, June 23rd, I went happily with my eGift card to the store. To my surprise the store was gone, totally cleared out. I found out later that they decided to do remodeling. OK. I go to another retail location. And I quickly find out that they cannot refund me the price difference between the sale price and the full price.

Luckily I kept the box and decided to return the d**n thing. But now I am still stuck with the bleeping eGift card which can only be applied towards a purchase in RadioShack.

Now I understand why RadioShack stores are almost always empty and their business is so slow. Because of their deceptive business practices!

Now I just feel disgusted and abused and feel like I never want to purchase anything again from RadioShack!

#1 UPDATE Employee

Unfortunate Experience

As an employee of this company, I have seen this happen far too many times. Please don't let this experience ruin your view of Radioshack. I don't literally speak for the company, but I do speak from my personal experiences as an employee. Far too often, other employees don't take the time to really explain how the service plans work, and we end up with unhappy customers.

The service plans are actually quite useful, if they are fully understood. You get back, exactly what you paid, it's not a literal protection of the product itself, but of the money you invested into the product. You then have the option to either repurchase the product, or make a different purchase. In a lot of ways it's better than actually replacing the item, because you may decide you dislike the item and want to purchase a different one.

I imagine if you had been able to return to the store you purchased it from, they would have indeed changed the price for you, to take responsibility for their bad explaination of how the service plans work. However this can't be promised at another location, as each store and manager has the freedom to make those decisions at the discretion of the store manager.

I personally have many happy and loyal return customers, because I take the time to fully educate them on the purchases they make. Not every radioshack is the same, and I personally apologize for your experience.
