What I don't like is the lack of communication, and the beurocratic execution of policy without consideration of outside influence.  They advertise to be very flexible with schedules, and course work; but that is not the case.  They basically told me what I wanted to hear to get me to give up all of my money and benifits.  And if you would have told me at 23 that my GI Bill benifits would basically be stolen from  me via lies from an alledged institution of higher learning;  I wouldn't have left the Army.  I was alot better at dealing with bullets and bombs than I am at dealing with people who just swindled me.

I have had 2 academic advisors.  Neither one knew how to return a phone call.  My first advisor would call, and leave a voice mail; and I would call and leave 10 voicemails before I actually got him to answer.  Not 10 voicemails to return a call, but 10 voicemails were left before he would answer his phone.  This would take days, if not a week, to get one question answered.  The second advisor pulls the same stuff, but with more important matter.

Recently, I was faced with the prospect of fighting a wrongfull eviction from my place of residence.  I contacted my instructors, as any student should; and I got return emails from all of them within 24 hours stating that I should try my best to keep up, and keep them in the loop.  I let them know that I had been borrowing a roommates car, and that this was no longer available.  This really only applied to one class, College Algebra; the rest were all online. I let them know so I could turn in late work, without losing points. Becuase I could only access my online courses via cell phone, or my work computer after hours; I made sure to let them all know.  This wrongfull eviction action began May 24, 2014, and I sent the email to my instructors on May 26, 2014 at 8:32 AM.

Today is June 2, 2014 and I just recieved notice that I was being dropped from one of my classes for not attending in 14 days.   The class is only Monday nights for 11 weeks.  How did I miss 14 days? Also, this call happened in typical fashsion.  My advisor called at 9:54 AM and left a message that I was being dropped from College ALgebra course, and I needed to return her call.  I was at work, but I called back at 12:58 PM, and 2:41 PM.  Finally at 5:01 PM, I got her to answer her phone.  Once again, she did not return my call, she answered her phone.  She told me that she had already dropped me from the course, and this meant that I had to repay and retake the course.  I informed her of my living situation, and wrongfull eviction; she told me I needed to contact her sooner!!!!!!!  I left 2 freakin messages, and 1 email to 4 instructors outlining the situation.  What was I supposed to do; hand deliver the information and staple it to her forhead.

After hearing this, I tried to contact the Academic Dean.  The receptionist informed me that it seemed like the Deans line was busy, but I could be transfered to her voicemail.  I declined, and asked for her direct line number.  She provided it, and I tried to call her myself.  She was right, it went straight to voicemail. So I left a voicemail outlining how this should not be acceptable; and that I did give prior notice to the people who actually needed it.  I called twice more after.  Wierd enough, the phone didn't go straight to voicemail.  So she ignored my new voice mail pertaining to these eggregious and outrageous actions.

This is just scratching the surface.  When I went to speak with the recruiters about possibly starting school, I made it clear I am a hands on learner.  The female recruiter informed me that this would not always be the case, but she should be able to arrange a way to get most of the career specific courses in a classroom setting.  In 3 quarters out of 5, I have had 2 physical classroom courses.  Intro to Business, and College Algebra.  I have taken Intro to Networking, Microsoft Windows Workstations, Computer Applications and Business Systems Concepts, Fundamentals of PC Hardware and Software........all online.  I built a computer from instructions online, and managed to learn almost nothing.  OH I paid for it all though, but that recruiter straight up lied.

The Intro to Business was a bit of a conundrum for me, becuase I showed them unofficial transcripts outlining 2 previous degrees I had started but never finished.  They said my previous coursework, including Business Law; was not the same as intro to business.  I pointed out the fact that I started my own business at 23, and ran it until I decided the paralegal field wasn't right for me.  That still didn't matter. I kept my notes from Business Law, and used those to pass rather than take new notes.  I wanted to see if they were playing me, and it turns out they were.  The course was exactly the same as business law, absent a course project that requires you to start a mock business.  I took Buisness Law, and had started my own business 3 years prior.

Whatever the hell is going on over there; it isn't right.  This place is tore up from the floor up, and I can't believe that the complaints listed above would be accptable in any educational institution in the world.  They swindled me out of my GI Bill, but I won't let them do it to one of my battles.  "Veterans Beware"  Anyone considering attending, please be aware they are very good at telling you what you want to hear.  And considering most instructors are graduates who couldnt find a job, $299.00 per credit is too much.  My first school was a state funded Jr College that cost $109.00 per credit.  I encourage anyone who is considering attending this school to check every other Jr Collage first.  It is cheaper, and has to be better.  These guys didn't exactly set the bar high.

Well, there has been a change to my complaint here.

I recieved a phone call this afternoon letting me know that, against all odds and their policy, they were reversing their disicion and allowing me to continue my course.  I was relieved, happy as hell, and little guilty for not adding their good portions.  THis problem solving is one of them.

First, it is necessry to correct one issue below.  That is after speaking with the Dean, she did not knowingly ignore my call.  She, as well as my advisor, were in a training meeting all day.  Thats why there was a gap between calls, and answer; it was also mentioned that time was not a factor.  I could have reached her 10 minutes later, and the policy still would have been executed.  This policy was in effect as a way of maintaining federal standards so as to allow the college to recieve federal funds.  WHich makes sense.  That other Jr college had a similiar standard regarding credits recieved without a degree, and outlined when federal funding needed to be pulled.  I guess it just a standard I was not aware of at the time of the complaint.

While I do not agree with the Intro to Business desicion, in terms of having to retake a course; I will accept partial blame as I cannot guarentee that I was explaining my background correctly.  Also, including some form of business records may have swayed them; but absent those records and a correct explanation, it is wrong for me to put this all on them.

The issue with hands on learning is still a large concern for me.  As mentioned, the current record isn't good; but for me to say all the important classes were online maybe only half the story.  I dont know.  As stated, I am in quarter 3 of 5 and for all I know; the next 2 semesters could all be face to face courses working with advanced server systems.  My point being, I don't know which classes are or are not important; I just didn't like having to build a computer online.  I would have perfered to have an instructor in front of me, but if I do take an advanced server class, and find my pc hardware and software instructor is teaching that course in a class room.  It would explain why that course may have been online.  This instructor might have to teach 3 advanced classes, and teach his or her simplest class online at night.  I don't know until I get to quarter 4 & 5.

My main point in this rebuttal is I went a little overboard.  They were all to willing to fix the issues I saw as eggregious, and I feel that I may have taken the wrong route in notifying them via this complaint.  I could have gone a little further to the Dean of the college; but, considering the external factors mentioned in my initial complaint, I was not in the right state of mind.  I let my anger get the best of me, and I forced that anger onto a party that may not have deserved it.  I would like it noted that I have had a lot of issues with a lot of companies, people, banks, service providers; and absent one bank that was amazing, this school is the second best entity I have worked with in terms of "making things right."

I believe that this ability to make things right would be worth the money, but just remember to follow the chain of command before you go over their heads.  IF t6hey know, they will make it right.
