I finished school at the end of June. I am still trying to find a
job. I had no choice but to go on Social Services which I am currently
on :-(
I promised my daughter that I would never get rid of Bear, the puppy I got for her almost a year ago. So I thought with a heavy heart that I would give up Thor to the Humane Society here in Regina as I can't really afford to keep them both right now. This was done by filling out the form with as much detail as possible; I was told that I could call and see how he was doing from the lady/girl behind the desk; all hope that I would find a job soon and be able to hopefully get him back OR that he would be adopted by a nice family that could afford to take care of him.
This was Saturday that I took him in.
I phoned and left a message on Tuesday for someone to call me back and let me know how he was doing. No phone call back.
I phoned again on Wednesday left a message again. Again, no phone call back.
I
called Thursday afternoon this time I actually got a person at the
lost and found and she told me that Thor was on the list for to be
euthanized. I'm like "WHAT?!?!??". Yeah, for aggressive behaviour and
medical reasons (he has a recurring ear infection and a laceration on
his paw). I asked to speak to one of the management that I was told to
speak with...apparently in a meeting. Phoned a while later and got her.
She is telling me that the staff can't get near him (bull, he's
scared, in a new place with new people, new dogs, misses us).
I
just found out from my sister-in-law that the humane's society's idea
of an aggression test is to feed the dog food in the cement cell that
they are in (or a different room as the H.S. trainer said) and if the
dog doesn't bite/whatever, then it passes. What a load!
After
discussion this morning mostly me bawling my eyes out and wanting to
see Thor and again this afternoon (bringing along a certified dog
trainer that is MORE than willing to work with the dog and even found a
dog rescue in town that would look at/after him), I swear that the
director only knows how to say, "No" and "We're not going there" and
the lady (don't know her position off hand) only knows how to say "I
guess we have our answer" when I wouldn't acknowledge that I am there
to say good-bye. Of course I don't want to say good bye, he is a GOOD
dog!
Thor is NOT an aggressive dog. I've had him for a year (give or take) and except for with Bear (the hyper untrained puppy) at eating time a couple times where I stepped in and stopped it, he has NEVER been aggressive...if he was, he would be allowed anywhere NEAR my daughter (now 5) or my niece (now 11). I wouldn't have been able to take him to the OFF-LEASH dog park. I wouldn't have been able to walk to 7-Eleven and tie him up outside. I wouldn't be able to put him outside when the guy downstairs comes home/leaves; he's been around people of all ages, dogs, cats, etc. and has NEVER been aggressive.
I
wouldn't have taken him to the Humane Society if I knew at all that
they have basically little clue. I actually got to spend about 5
minutes with him. Petting him through the gate (iron bars holding him
in a cement cell). He was FINE!!! He wanted out so bad! I was given
more kisses by him than I ever have before. He whined a lot to get out.
He gave me BOTH paws, 1 at a time and I held them for a short period
(remember laceration/infection in his paw), they haven't cleaned out his
ears (apparently because they can't get near him) I cleaned out his
left ear (the ONE with the infection) and stuck my finger in and cleaned
out what I could with 3 -4 fingers (using one at a time). If he was
'aggressive' he would have bitten my hands off as I had both of them in
there petting him.
The "Humane Society" REFUSES to budge;
they won't allow him a chance even with the certified trainer NOR the
Dog RESCUE in town. They refuse to allow him the chance to show that he
is a good dog; because he is scared/injured and wants out of that cell
they won't even TRY and say put him outside in one of the cages out
back that I have from a good source they rarely to never use...They
would rather just kill him (to settle their minds, they call it
euthanize...) but they would kill him rather than give him the chance.
The head Trainer/supervisor lead, whatever her title is even came in and
talked with me and the Trainer Guy - I'm sorry to say she needs MORE
training especially in animal behaviour and she's the one looking after
these animals. Sad!
Anyhoo, I am fighting this as much as I can. I hope that the WORSE case scenario is that I can't get Thor back and that he can go to the Rescue Shelter and can be re-habilitated (not that he needs it...except maybe leash walking lol, man can he pull).
UPDATE:HE WAS KILLED this past weekend either Saturday, Sept. 25 or Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010.
How did I find out?? An online long-time friend from Oregon phoned, pleaded her case about trying to save Thor, then the Director of Operations told her that he was euthanised on the weekend. (They use the word euthanised like they are doing the animal a favour. Thor was NOT in insufferable pain, they KILLED him. I phoned later and MADE him tell me himself. and he had the "cahoonas" to tell me he was sorry.
R.I.P. my buddy...I am so sorry that I handed you over to those heartless people.
