On 20 December 2007 I went to my local Holiday Hair salon (owned and operated by the Regis Corporation) to have my light-brown hair colored back to my natural medium/dark blonde color. I had decided that I no longer wanted to color my hair, especially since I would be getting married in a year and I wanted my natural color for the wedding.

The stylist first stripped my hair of its color, which was necessary since it was being lightened. She then put a filler in before she could add color. Unbeknownst to me at the time, she put an ash tone filler in my hair. This resulted in my hair turning green. I was horrified, but she said once she put the regular color on, the green would go away.

After applying the regular color, my hair was still green. She realized that she had made a mistake by using an ash tone filler since my hair had been stripped of its red and orange pigment. Even the other stylist told her that she should have known better. In an attempt to get rid of the green in my hair, she applied additional gold color twice. This did nothing, and I was starting to panic. At a final attempt to get rid of the green, she put a red dye on my hair. After rinsing it out, the green was gone, but my hair was now a medium/dark red. She said that there was nothing else she could do and it would have to stay that way.

I have included pictures at the end of this letter a picture of my natural hair color that I had shown the stylist and a picture of my hair after the stylist colored it. As you can see, the colors are nowhere near being similar.

I am very, very upset by this stylist's lack of competence and that my hair is now red. If I would have wanted my hair red, I could have colored my own hair. I went to the salon specifically to have my hair lightened back to its normal color without having to worry about mistakes and it getting messed up. I am unable to have it redone because the stylist said my hair will not be able to handle it and it could turn green again. I am now back at square one, with a hair color that I do not like and that is far from my natural color. I do not know if I will be able to have my natural hair color for my wedding.

In addition, when the stylist rung me up, she insisted I purchase hair care products that I did not want. She said they were necessary because my hair was damaged and any other products might make my hair absorb green tones.

Because of the stylist's initial mistake of turning my hair green and then her attempts to fix it, my appointment that should have been only two to three hours long ended up lasting six hours long. I had to call someone to cover my shift for me at work, and I lost that days pay.

Needless to say, I am not only disappointed by this experience, but very, very upset because all I wanted was for my hair to be my natural color again and now it is red and cannot be changed.

I do not feel that I should have to pay $200 for someone elses mistake that was not and cannot be corrected. My hair was not colored to its natural medium/dark blonde state (it is now medium/dark red), is permanently damaged and discolored, and I lost a day's pay due to having to miss work for the appointment lasting twice as long as it was supposed to.

Not convinced it was totally the stylist fault

AUTHOR: pnemosiene - (USA)

I am a licensed Cosmetologist and I have experience in advanced color. Some of the details of this report bother me. First if your hair was only light brown there was probably no reason to strip the color before lightening it. When a stripper is used, it generally needs to be recolored immediatley for three reasons, one it opens the cuticle and pulls out color molucules that leave microscopic holes in the hair shaft, second because the color is sparatic and usually odd looking revealing the dominent undertone of the previous dye color such as green (used in ash brown hair dyes), third because the hair is so porous any additional all over color applied will deposite one to three shades darker than normal on stripped hair. Even if stripping was necesary to achieve the level of lightness deired (which I believe it was not necesary) fillers are only meant to be used taking hair from lighter to darker to help the all over color attach to the hair. A filler should not have been used at all to make hair lighter, especially not green. I am not however, convinced the green that remained later was caused by the filler, because fillers are processed with semi-perminent color that eventually washes out, I think the green was actually caused by the stripper used, which may not be the stylist fault, because very little training is provided on the subject. Red would be an appropriate color to counteract green in a case where the hair was not being lightened however in this case the hair just should have been highlited or lifted to the desired color. Possibly an overlay to get the perfect shade of dark blonde. Without knowing what the "regular color" was I can only speculate an ash blond was applied which worsened the green cast.

After your hair went through that process the cuticle was exploded the stylist did the right thing in determining that no further services could be performed at that time, she was also right in recomeending products which I am sure she did out of a feeling of wanting to help fix what she had done to your hair, but I would not have paied for the services and would have requested reimbursment for the hair products  from the salon management. Later when you tried to fix it I believe that the red color would have turned orange as it was lightened not green, uness a second stripper was used which just restarted your problem over.

corrective service attempted, hair still wrong color and damaged

AUTHOR: liz - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 22, 2008

As some of the red started to fade out, the green undertones came back (since the stylist never got rid of them and simply colored over them). After talking to the district manager, I received a corrective color service. The green was removed and my hair re-colored. However, the re-color was still not done correctly. My hair is still a medium red, even after showing the stylist numerous pictures of my natural haircolor (the color I am trying to go back to).

I appreciate the stylist trying to fix the initial mistake, but am still very unhappy since my hair is much darker and a different shade than I wanted. In addition, I called another salon to check if there is any way to remove the red from my hair and have it restored to my natural color (or at least a color remotely similar). I was told that my hair shaft is blown due to all the damage that was caused and there is no way to get rid of the medium red shade except for letting my hair grow out. This whole experience has been horrible and has resulted in much unneeded stress and a lowered self-image.
