CarMax, CarMax Business Services Unscrupulous RePossession Practices, Internet
My friend purchased a truck from CarMax.  He financed it.  The truck was fine.  He purchased it to start a new business and it went well until he got very sick.  When he knew that he was not going to make it, he and his family called CarMax and said that they should take the vehicle.  CarMax said that they would send them some papers to deal with the situation.  He died soon after.  CarMax never sent any papers. I called CarMax to inform them that he died and to advise that the family still didn't have the paperwork.  I also advised that he did not have assets in his estate and they still wanted to surrender the vehicle.  I advised that I was calling to help his wife and that there was a lot to do.  He has been gone about 2 1/2 weeks.  Last night at 2:30 in the morning a man arrived at their house ringing the doorbell.  My friend's wife and her two kids were scared out of their minds.  They called the police because they were afraid and the policemen helped them.  My friend's wife turned over the keys because her husband intended that all along anyway. My friend's wife is so sad and overwhelmed by all the changes that have occurred in their lives, but still tried to do everything she could so CarMax would know that the vehicle could be surrendered without any trouble.  CarMax chose to ignore all the information they were provided and to make it traumatic for the grieving family.   This makes them not just inept, but rotten.

carmax CARMAX FRAUD norcross Georgia
I purchased a GMC Arcadia for my wife for 27000.00 from carmax.  It had 46 thousand miles and was in great shape.  Prior to us finishing the deal.  They showed me there car fax which showed the suv had been in the shop for what they called normal maintenance.  When our suv reached 53 thousand miles, our transmission went out.  It was 2700.00 for the repair from a local GMC dealer ship.  Which is HAYES in Toccoa,Ga.  They went above and beyond the call of duty for us.  During that time,  I asked if they could run me off a true carfax which they did.  It showed the the car had been in for more then just routine maintenance.  Gears had been replaced in the steering column.  Had issues with the electrical circuit that had been replaced twice. and several other things that was not given to us at the time of purchase.  We have called several times asking the question, how is there car fax so different from ours from GMC.  They will not return our call or anything like that..  sad to say.  I will never reffer or do business with CARMAX ever again.

CarMax CarMax & MaxCare are the WORST Nationwide
Buy a car from CarMax at your own Peril. Their 108 point inspection? Questionable. Their auto mechanic shop? Not theirs…3rd party.  Worst of all; their supplemental insurance, MAXCARE....made to sound like  CarMax and like a good investment…try collecting from this company. Agents from Mexico thru the US give you totally different answers on your contract coverage …1 saying part is covered and another saying it is not. Our local repair company made multiple calls to Maxcare insurance to confirm that this part was not excluded and asked for the coverage. Refused. No coverage. Our repair cost for a car we have had for 15 months, $2100.00. Insurance worthless as many claims on the thread say.  CarMax totally refused our appeal for help with the Insurance company even though they sold us the policy and likely getting a portion of the monthly insurance payment. No notice whatsoever to us during their sales pitch that Carmax has nothing to do with this insurance company except selling their product. Don’t  buy from CarMax!

CARMAX STAY AWAY from CARMAX! ripoff Kennesaw Georgia
My experience started out perfectly. I got a good deal on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it was easy, I was happy. Then, after driving it over 2000 miles, It starts over heating, transmission acts up. I take it to a Jeep dealership and fiind out that when carmax serviced my Jeep, they forgot to replace the oil AND transmission fluids!!! No leaks were found, they simply didn't replace the fluids! Carmax refuses to admit fault and now won't even return calls or emails. I'm absolutely stunned that a company the size of carmax would act like this. I've been back to Jeep 3 times now as they try to repair the damaged transmission. I'm sure I've also suffered engine damage that will surface later. I'm extremely disappointed and will encourage friend and foe alike to stay away from this company, pathetic, absolutely PATHETIC customer service. I was completely ripped off! CarMax CarMax 5 day policy ripoff East Haven Connecticut
I purchased a 2006 vehicle CarMax in East Haven. They ran some sort of vehicle history report that came back clean. It had to be transferred so I paid the fee and waited 3 weeks. The vehicle arrived and I picked it up on the 25th. On the way home, the transmission began slipping on more than one occasion. I turned around to head back to the dealership, but they had already closed. I brought the vehicle back the next day, they gave me a loner, and I did not see the vehicle for 13 days. I had the mind set to call and speak with the sales manager on the 3rd day to get an extension on the 5 day money back guarantee. He stated that I should have the vehicle for 5 days of uninterrupted ownership and he would give me the extension from the day I pick it up from service. I then confirmed this with him via email for written proof. I received the vehicle on the 9th, but the issues were the same. It was like they didn't even look at it. How is it possible they had the vehicle for 13 days and the problems were still there. In my assumption, they intentionally hold vehicles past the 5 day money back guarantee so you are stuck with it. I brought the vehicle back on the 10th for the same issues, and got yet another loner. Later that day I was told I wouldn't get the vehicle back for another few days. I spoke with the sales manager for another extension. This time things were different. They refused to offer me an extension, instead they wanted to give me a 5 day exchange policy. CarMax doesn't even advertise that. I called the corporate office who told me they have never heard of this either, but it is up to the stores general manager. Thank God I corresponded with the first store manager via email because I was still within the 5 days and had written proof. They did everything in there power to dodge the situation, but in the end, they had to give me back all of my money. The worst part of this, I returned the next day to drop off some papers, and saw my file on the counter. I read the service papers on the vehicle and to my surprise, they had previous knowledge of these and other problems and sold it anyway. Unfortunately, the vehicle was right back on the lot without being repaired. It's a shame some unsuspecting consumer is going to get stuck with a vehicle that has major transmission, brake, computer, and drive train malfunctions. Detective Lou Trumbull, ConnecticutU.S.A.

Carmax Purchase & Service From Carmax Boynton Beach, Florida
PROBLEMS:1. Headlight - When we were going over the final checklist for the purchase of car, we noticed one of the headlightswas not working. We found this to be pretty amusing as the salesman told us that no one does the check list before purchasing. My wife said I want to test everything out and sure enough the first thing we checked, did not function. SALESGUY told us that they might have one in stock but they would definitely take care of it. There was actually another gold Subarau Tribeca at the lot on the time and he tried to grab the bulb out of that one. He informed me that it was toodifficult and they would have to order one. It took 2 days for them to get the bulb and they replaced so it was functioning. After a few weeks, we noticed that one of the headlights started getting water/condensation inside of thelens. I called yesterday (10/17) to ask them which headlight was touched when they replaced the bulb. The lady in service informed me that they did not know which one (after being on hold for 10 minutes). She asked me which light washaving the issue and I refused to tell her which one. I felt like that was a question so you guys could say you replaced the other one. I know which light was replaced and I know it is the same light leaking. She told me that theywould only change the bulb and would not touch the actual lens of the light. I am skeptical of this due to the salesman telling me it was too tough for him to switch out. I asked that the service department fax me a copy of the work orderfor this fix.UPDATE:Taken back into the service department and they fixed the leak. Apparently the bulb was installed incorrectly and this caused a leak in the headlight. 2. Rubber Door Siding - When we test-drove the car and decided to make the purchase, we noticed that there wereonly 3 rubber siding pieces on the doors. There was one missing on the driver-side rear door. We spoke with the salesman, SALESGUY, and he informed us that they would get a 4th piece to make the car look uniform. So we thoughtthis would be a non-issue for the vehicle. After the car was purchased, the tune seemed to change. The service department told me that they didn't have a 4th rubber siding so there was nothing they could do. They told us we couldtake off the 3 other pieces so the car would look uniform. I told them it wasn't acceptable. They told me that they were going to have to order a whole roll of the rubber piping so that the 4th piece could be replaced. I believethis took 3 days for the service department to complete. I have attached pictures of the 4th piece that was slapped on the car. Does it look uniform? They had told me that sometimes it is hard to match the piping exactly. I assumed that this meant they would replace all 4 of them. When I look at the other 3, it is clear that this is different. UPDATE: I told Carmax not to worry about this since I am better off dealing with it myself. Does this really warrant 2 attempts? 3. Paint Scratch - After test-driving the vehicle and deciding to make the purchase, we noticed the scratch on reardoor. We showed SALESGUY, this scratch and he informed us that it would be no problem and it will be taken care of. Again, after dealing with sales department, we thought this would be another non-issue. The scratch is about1-1.5 inches long and is not very deep. At the time of purchase, it was clearly a scratch where some silver could be seen through the car (metal?). We go to pick up the car after a voicemail telling us the vehicle is ready. When we getthere, we notice the scratch hasn't been dealt with. We were told that they were unaware this needed to be fixed. So we leave the dealership and wait until the next night. We speak with NIGHTPEON that evening and he shows us the car.We see that the scratch has not been fixed. He agrees with us and informs us of a 5 (or 6) foot rule for cosmetic issues. He said if it can be seen past that distance, it has not been fixed up to their standards. He informs us that hewill talk to the service department and make sure it is fixed. The next morning I receive a voicemail from Matt in service, telling me to pick up the vehicle. I called him back and told him that we saw the vehicle last night and it was not up to par. I guess he was unaware that we had spoke with NIGHTPEON the night before and that it was going to be fixed better. I made a phone call toour salesman, SALESGUY, on this day as well. I informed him about the issues regarding the scratch. He went and looked at the car and agreed with us that it did not look up to standard. He also informed me that he had scratched the fixoff himself so that they would have to fix it another time. Matt in service was telling me that the vehicle was complete up to standards and nothing was going to get fixed. I think this is why SALESGUY went to mess up the fix. We go pickup the car the next night and again the scratch can be seen from outside the 5-6 foot distance. At this time, NIGHTPEON informs us that we can go back to the lot and pick a different car because the scratch is fixed as good as theyare doing it. I have attached a picture of what the scratch looks like now. The sticker is ripped due to them trying to fix the scratch and it looks 10x worse than it did at time of test-drive. UPDATE: The car was brought back for a touch-up and it looks like they didnt have someone from the local elementary school do the touch-up. It has held up through the car washes and looks somewhat decent. I plan to have it done professionally when it starts to deteriorate.4. Air Conditioning - About 2 weeks into having the car, we start to notice a mildew smell in the car every morning. Ona weekend trip with my wife, she noticed the front passenger seat floor was filling up with water. We found this out by picking up her expensive purse and finding it soaking wet. I had heard a sound everytime I made a turn in thevehicle. I thought it sounded like a motor but after talking with SERVICEGUY1, we thought it was the sound of water in overflow tank. I brought the vehicle in for this to be fixed. SERVICEGUY1 told me that the A/C drain was clogged withmildew and it needed to be flushed. Since this was clogged, the condensation from the A/C was filling up in tank and overflowing into my car. This explains the filthiness of this water. They flushed the system out and I picked up thecar. About 2 weeks after this fix, the auto-button on the A/C has started working intermittently. Sometimes you hit AUTO and it shows max speed on the digital reader but no air comes out. I would say it is about a 50/50 chance that A/Cwill turn on when you would like if you use the AUTO button. I called SERVICEGUY1 about this issue about 2 weeks back and he told me to take the vehicle to their service department. He told me that it shouldn't have anything to do with theirfix. He said he was going on vacation that next week but to still bring it in for them to determine if there was a correlation. I also told him why they didn't replace the mat or at least clean it since my car has smelt like mildew every day since. He told me that sometimes they send stuff down to Ft Lauderdale to get the smell out. He agreed with my that when those mats get wet, they are ruined but I said I would be happy if the smell just left the car. I don't want to spend $10/monthly on air fresheners for the life of the car. Why was it not sent down there in the first place? I deserved the vacuum and leave mats in the sun for a few hours service?UPDATE: I brought the car in for them to fix this. They told me it was the motor that was broken but they dont want to go ahead and fix it. After seeing all of the scratches and panel damage they did when looking at motor, I have decided the$275 repair isnt worth having them touch the car. After spending countless nights at the store/service department, it isnt worth the breath. I dealt with the Corporate Customer Service Department and they told me the same thing thestore told me (after 2 weeks of having to call for updates because they couldnt get a hold of the Boynton Beachstoreare you surprised??). For you guys to fix the scratch, headlight, and rubber piping - we waited almost a week to pick the car up. It looked like work orders were not even opened on a timely basis. We purchased car at 7PM on Sunday night and the car didn't have a WO opened up until 2PM the next day. My salesman told me that I would have the car by lunch the next day. If the piping did not come in, we understood we may have to bring the car back for it to be put on (or us to just pick up and install ourselves). We were asked if we wanted a loaner on Sunday night and we politely declined. We thought no reason for paperwork and waste your guys time if we would have the car by lunchtime. On Tuesday night when we went to pick up the car, it wasnot ready. We requested a loaner at this time and NIGHTPEON told us we couldn't have one. It seems like you guys are cutting corners (probably due to the economy) but we shopped at your location because it's supposed to be no haggle. We are getting a car that has gone through a 125-point inspection and we don't have to argue on price. We liked your business model and that's why we shopped at Carmax. I would think this inspection would find some of these issues? Atleast the headlight? Matt told me A/C drain isn't part of inspection but it is very common with cars in Floridathat sit for a bit.  We understand that we purchased a used car. This is not a brand new car and we understand that. However, we feel like everything you guys touch causes more problems for us. Each of these 4 issues still have an issue with them. We haveclashed with the service department and some of the employees in your location. We are at the point where we don't trust the work done at the establishment. I am hoping we can find a different service center for these issues to behandled. I think the only saving grace here is that the car is only a 2008 with 24k miles on it. I can be reached via cell phone at XXX-XXX-XXX.UPDATE: DO NOT BELIEVE THE CARMAX IDEAS!! You are much better off buying a car from a used car dealer that is reputable. They will stand by their car better than this. Carmax could care less about one customer, as they want VOLUME. A dealer wants you to come back and buy their next car from them. Carmax hopes you become desperate and have to buy from them since they hold such a huge inventory. I will never give them another CENT of business and I recommend everyone else do the same. Dont believe what the sales guy tells you at this store because it will not be backed up. And if you think they do the inspections or spend an average of '12 hours' on every vehicle, you are crazy. They are paying people minimum wage that know nothing about half the cars they see. They change tires, filters, and windshield wipers. BOYCOTT CARMAX!

Carmax Carmax, The runaround and a lost car title Norcross, Georgia
We were recently at the store in Norcross, GA. It was very unpleasant. I had went in to look/buy a 2010 Dodge Caliber. It took about 5 minutes to find the vehicle we wanted since we had done some research on their website prior. We sat down with the salesman Keith Palmer. The first day we spent 5 hours there. We went through everything paperwork, down payment, insurance. You name it we did it.  He kept running back and forth, and coming back with The financial department needs this, and this. He was extremely UN-organized. When it was all over with we had given him everything. Just as we went into the signing room he pulled us out of the signing room and said Carmax would not let us have the car until my DL had been changed over to GA. Now..I can agree that was my fault, but he had seen my DL at the very beginning he couldn't tell me this before I wasted all that time, and we had went through all of that? Well I left the dealership and the next day I went and got my correct DL. So at that point there was nothing else that needed to be done.  I had kept in contact with him every single day since he had said he would hold the vehicle for me. He assured me when we came in again that it would be a very quick process and nothing else would happen. Well we showed up a 2nd day, and he had to redo the paperwork. After telling us he wouldn't have to, that everything was finished with the Caliber. That took almost 3 hours. The sales person was extremely UN-knowledgeable and did not answer many questions. When we asked him why he kept re-submitting the information for the loan approvals he said he had to do that every time he had to correct something on the paperwork. All the mistakes on the paperwork was his fault. I was sitting behind him in the office looking at his computer screen and I corrected him several times on things that were wrong.  Finally when the paperwork was done and we went into the signing room we sat there for almost a hour. No one came over people kept looking at us and finally I asked, What is going on? No one said anything. Finally someone came over, sat down and said..We are sorry we cannot find the Calibers Title. We are looking for it.. Now..we had spoken to our sales person several times we were under the impression the deal was done, then when we get to the final stages the car title is not available.  My sales person was not even going to tell me this until I asked him. Let me add to this my Grandmother was with me she is elderly, has some health problems..but she was there helping me find a good vehicle since she has had some dealings with dealerships, and she knows how they work. My grandmother had to ask the sales person 3 times, What was going on with the car, and why was it taking so long? He kept dodging the question and would not answer her. Finally he told her, and she asked him the same thing we did, How can you have a vehicle for sale on your car lot and have no idea where the title is?  Now out of all of those days that I spoke with him, and the first day of going through the paperwork I was told all of this was done. It wasn't anything of the sorts. I would think if he knew we were coming back and had shown that much interest in that vehicle he would have made sure everything was together. To top it all off shortly after that happened, he told us he had to go home. His wife was there to pick him up. So he handed us off to another salesman. Yes the other salesman was great, but we had to go through everything all over again.  To top it all off..They had no other calibers, and told us they could have one shipped from another Carmax but it would not be there until tomorrow. So we ended up having to choose something else off of the lot. We did not leave the dealership until 10:30 p.m. that night. All over Carmax there were signs up saying, You can have a stress-free, enjoyable, good price, buying experience. We got none of those things. Also the commercials that say, The way car buying should be. After that I will probably never go through any of that ever again. I walked away with a car I do like, but some what feel like we settled because we could not get our first choice. The car is a great car, but it was not exactly what we wanted. I am very unhappy about this whole situation. I've never had a experience like this in my life. I feel lied to, and ran-around.

Carmax A strikingly low appraisal..... Kennesaw Georgia
To begin with, it's with distaste that I have to speak badly of Carmax, as I have often thought of them to be a fairly reputable auto chain. I particularly like that you can search all their locations, to find exactly the vehicle you were looking for. However, yesterday was a different story. I own a 2000 Pontiac Firebird, V6, automatic. Clean history, 81,000 miles, and while not immaculate, it has been very well kept. Power windows, locks, traction control, and rear spoiler (factory). Perfectly stock. A nick here or two in the paint, a 1 inch long crack in the dash; but no other flaws. Always maintained to the best of my ability. I hesitate to list it as excellent, but based on KBB for a good condition model such as mine, can command a trade in value of just under $6,000. Which is excellent, as I owe $5,200 on my loan. Auto Consumer Guide, and Nada, give similar values. I also did some research, and found that Carmax had one listed, with similar miles to mine, automatic also, same year, options; at $10,500. I certainly didn't expect to see that much, but somewhere roughly between the two values, would be nice. Spent an hour or so, going over every bit of the car, cleaning it, checking the tires, etc; to make sure I had a well prepped car. It was without shock, then, that the appraisal also came back, with comments that it was in excellent condition, tires were good, etc, and nothing seemed to be anything less than consistent with its miles and good maintenance. Plus a comment that Carmax would absolutely love to purchase your vehicle. Maybe this is a standard statement, but still a nice gesture. Offered buying price? $3,000. I barely knew how to respond, quite frankly. The associate, of course, was quite friendly, and I don't fault her in the slightest. Her service was flawless and there's no complaint to be found there. But when she asked what I thought of her appraisal price, I had to tell her that I found it rather insulting, and listed the values I had seen in various car guides, as well as what they listed a very comparable car within their own listings for. Her response was that none of those books matter, their appraisal is based on a completely different system, and since they wouldn't be able to sell my car on the front lot, that it would have to be sold by wholesale auction. Thus, though the entire report says my car is excellent, it is in fact, practically worthless. Her follow-up question was if I wanted some time to think about it, and as I hadn't disclosed my loan amount to her; she suggested that I pay the negative difference in my loan, and sell it to them anyway. I told her politely, that I'm selling the car because I can't afford the loan payments as it stands now, and as her offering price is just over 50% of what my loan is....there's certainly no way I can buy out of it. I guess I'm wondering; am I completely wrong about the system of car values; or did I just get seriously low-balled? They have my number, and I'm certain I'll receive a phone call near the end of the 7 day period; to see if I've had time to consider selling my vehicle. Not sure what I'll say. I've owned and sold a number of vehicles, to the point where I'm fairly familiar with the market, and if I can sell a 1993 Honda Prelude, Salvage title, with missing front bumper, and some body damage, for $3200; I shouldn't accept an offer like this for a far superior vehicle. Unless the intent was simply to create a nearly $7,000 profit margin..... Sorry Carmax, but this was definitely an insulting encounter that I won't soon forget. Michael Atlanta, GeorgiaU.S.A.

Carmax Salesman lied Omaha Nebraska
I will never buy a car from Carmax again. Carmax gives you a 30 day warranty and I was told by the salesman that I had the option of purchasing an extended warranty in that time period. It is a lie. When I called him back, he not only informed me that I could not buy an extended warranty, he denied saying it. Upon further investigation, the truth is he trained in Kansas City and apparently you used to be able to do this in Missouri. It is no longer an option. He actually works in the Omaha, Nebraska store and did not check his facts. He denies ever telling me this to cover his own hide and now I am left without a warranty. I spoke with a woman in the store that is supposed to be some kind of manager. She was rude and no help at all. Also, we were told that if we bought the car at that Carmax and decided to return it in the 5 day time period we could return it in Kansas City. Also a lie. We checked with the Kansas City store and that is not the policy. You would be better off buying a car from a shady car salesman. At least you would know you might be getting duped. My sister tried to warn me not to buy from Carmax. I should have listened. I have had the vehicle 3 months and now I am stuck with a van that has a check engine light that comes on at random and goes back off at random. I will be making several long distance trips in the vehicle and have no idea how reliable it is. Carmax is a very dishonest company. Shame on them for advertising that they are better than the rest. Carmax ripoff Kennesaw Georgia
Bought a 2000 Toyota with 27000 miles on it. Also bought the extended warranty so I would not have to worry about the car. Had the car 2 weeks and the clutch went out. Had the car towed to Carmax in Kennesaw Ga and it was repaired but the transmission started acting up. It would grind when you would shift gears. Took it back to carmax and they said nothing was wrong. Drove the car 2 months and the motor blew. It has had Reg. service and was kept in tip top shape by me. I had the car towed back to carmax and was told that it would not be covered by the warranty. I was also charged for the tow bill to carmax and back home. Carmax said that if they feel you have abused the car (it has never been abused by me) they would not cover it. This is an easy out for them to use this. I have called and talked to everybody I can at Carmax and have gotten nowhere. Some were very rude. I now have a high dollar piece of junk that carmax could care less about. I will never ever set foot in a carmax dealership again and will make it my life goal to let anyone who will listen what kind of custormer service this place has. If you buy a car from Carmax no matter what they say you have NO warranty even if you pay for the 4 year exteneded warranty. I made a high dollar mistake don't you do the same. Carmax Check in Mail HOUSTON Texas
My wife and I financed a Ford Explorer from this Carmax in Jan 08. This is not against the Salesman, he was understanding and very helpful. This is against the service area of Carmax. According to our warrenty we have 30 days for any problems that might occur from structual. Then we have 3 yrs / 36 months for internal problems. Here's what happened about day 25 we were driving down the road and started hearing a grinding noise and an popping sound. Well like any other common sense person we automatically pull over and check the brakes. From what I could see there was enough padding left on it. So I drove it home slowly. Once I arrived at home I called Carmax and they told me that I could take it to Oklahoma City to their Carmax dealer to get it looked out. I mentioned that place is 2 hours away. Then they said I could have it towed at my expense. So then I asked what if a local dealership looked at it. The repersentative aggreed. I called the local dealership, and they said they could fix it. This was a Wednesday that we dropped it off. The dealership checked it out and determined that the Drums were bad and that the bearings in the rear Hubs were bad and faulty. So they fixed it in about 2 days. Come Monday the service dept at the dealership faxed the work order to the Houston Carmax. Now once they got it they supposeably sent it to Corparate Office in Virgina. Now this is next Thursday that I am writing this and I still am waiting on Corp Office or someone from Carmax to Fedex the check to the dealership to release our truck. I have been giving numerous numbers to Corp Office which of course they do not answer. No one has givin me a FEDEX Tracking Number. The Service Dept in Houston susspoably replaced the hubs and rotated the tires and replaced the brakes before selling it to me. The dealership said that the hubs were worn out and old, the brakes if I am lucky has about 8 thousand miles left on them. The alignment is off, the Tires are going to need replaced in about 3 months to 6 months. So to all those people out there ventureing to buy from Carmax, make sure ou physically check it out, ask if you can see the work order or service order done to the vechicule your about to buy. Request a copy so that if something goes wrong you have proof of when it was fixed. Check in mail FORT SILL, OklahomaU.S.A.

Carmax sold me 'wrecked' cars Sterling Virginia
I like the way Carmax did business, it is easy. The prices are high, but I was thinking I was getting hand picked best-of-the-best used cars. The financing is simple, as they always approve you through their CarMax Auto Finance at whatever interest they want to spit out. The first car I bought was a Mercedes C-class coupe. I liked it, and it looked good. I took it to have the oil changed at the Mercedes dealership, and they gave me an alarming report....the fenders had been replaced, there was visible overspray all over the car (I didn't notice until they showed me under a light) and overall the car had extended amounts of wear to the drivetrain for a vehicle with 36,000 miles on it. I went back to Carmax, and they treated me like a pariah. I was nice and friendly, but the service manager gave me this story that the car came in all keyed up and beat up. So they repainted every panel on the car except the roof. The windshield had damage, but they were able to polish the dings out. I was showed the paint shop, and a full report of my car with pictures when it was taken in on trade! Everything the manager said was true. The car looked awful. I had to almost bring my lawyer down there to get access to this info. This info should be given to the buyer first thing! Before I learned this, I bought another vehicle there. A SUV for my wife. I took it in to be traded. They come back and tell me this vehicle has been wrecked, and it too has been repainted. The bumper was repainted and is starting to peel. So here we go again....... Carmax takes anything, and 'reconditions' it to like new. BS. Once a car has been wrecked, dented, scratched, flogged, and beaten, it is never the same again! Ushawk1 NoVA, VirginiaU.S.A.

CARMAX Treated with Insult Kenosha Wisconsin
Okay. Here is my story and I never thought that I would have a bad thing to say about Carmax. I have purchased 4 vehicles from them 2 new and 2 used. I had purchased a 01 Lincoln Town Car 18 months ago and had decided to trade up to newer and a bit smaller car. I drove 4 hours to get to the dealer because they had the car I wanted. I never thought I'd be driving back without trading. I got there and the salesman was absolutely stunned at the superb condition of my car. When I got it it was still a bit dirty and I had completely detailed it and had kept it in showroom new condition. I had all the service records since owning it in the glove box proven the car had been meticulously maintained. I drove the car I came to buy and it was great. So then this guy went to do the evaluation of my car. Now when I purchased the car 18 month before it had supposedly gone through the extremely thorough check they do for vehicles. I had only drive 12123 mile since purchasing it. I paid 11,999 for the car. Now when the price they would pay came back, 3500! Yep, the wonderful car they had sold me was now a piece of junk in their eyes. And the guy that did the evaluation was extremely rude and very insulting. In point of fact, I have never been so insulted in my life. I walked out with him basically still shouting at me that the car was now worthless and would have to be auctioned off. How did it happen that in 18 months the car went from a Featured vehicle to an auction item???? I was so upset but not deterred. I went to my local Mercedes dealer where they had a pre-owned event going on. I was treated as a valued customer and respected. I had parked my car over by the cars for sale while test driving the one I liked. Another customer came by and thought that it was ready for sale, it was that clean. While I was buying the car I drove he was ready to buy my old one. So much for a car worthy of only auction! The car I bought was certified, came with a paid up warranty to 100k miles and I got over 8k for my trade and paid 4 k less for a very comparable car and this one came with a warranty that Carmax would have had me pay 1600 for! They said they had never seen a car in such clean and wonderfully kept condition! Carmax, after 4 cars you have lost a customer for life. Next time you want to insult a good customer, hope they can recover and get an even better car at an even better deal like I did. Yep, Camax sucks! Cheezer Schofield, WisconsinU.S.A.

CarMax False Promises! Norcross, Georgia
I purchased the Jeep on Feb. 20 of 2012. I was impressed with the Jeep and the process, my salesman was very good. At the end of May I was driving up the highway and I heard a loud knocking noise, as I drove a little more it got louder so I pulled over. When I pulled into a newby gas station, the front right wheel literally broke off. I called AAA and they towed it to Carmax in Norcross. I was ok with the situation because I purchased the full warranty- Maxcar plan for $2300, and was promised peace of mind. After review the service manager claims this will not fall under warranty since it was not a collision or mechanical failure. I disagree completely. I did not have the tires rotated, only the oil changed in mid-May. I am being charged for the tow, the rental car, the technician's fee for looking into it, and an estimate for $1200 to fix the tire. My fender was bent in the process. I refuse to pay for this as the Jeep wrecked itself. The only explaination is that Carmax sold me a Jeep with loose lugnuts. They don't just fall off or break. They claim I should file it under my personal insurance as vandalism. #1 I don't have that coverage and #2 nothing can be proved it was vandalism.  If I would have been driving with my kids in the Jeep and it happened on the highway, it could have been very bad news. Even if it technically did not fall under the warranty coverage, in which I tacked on an additional $2300 to my car note, it's a customer service issue!

IDENTITY THEFT! I have a client that was paying cash for a vehicle. After she test drove the vehicle, she told Carmax to hold the vehicle til the next day and she would bring cashier's check to purchase. Carmax had her sign documents, supposedly to HOLD the vehicle until the following day. The documents she signed contained her Social Security number and driver's license number. The next day, she took cashier's check to Carmax and picked up her vehicle. A month or so later, she received a letter from Carmax indicating they had learned that her personal checking account information had been used after she purchased a vehicle at CarMax Towne Ctr location. CarMax Sold Faulty Vehicle IHouston, Texas
I purchased a 2010 Toyota Tundra Limited from the North Houston Carmax, that apparently had an aftermarket alarm, which malfunctioned within 3 months of buying the truck. I never thought about the alarm as the truck is basically new (4k miles) and the key chain / control functioned correctly. Once the alarm started going off, for no reason, while parked, while driving and couldnt be controlled by the key chain, I went to the Toyota dealer. According to the Toyota dealer, the aftermarket alarm, which is mounted in plain view on the fender well was not installed correctly and was affecting the entire electrical system. I assumed that the brain trust that checks vehicles bought and sold by Carmax actually knew what they were doing but apparently I was wrong. For Carmax to buy a vehicle, look under the hood and not know that a non-factory alarm was installed makes you wonder what they check, the oil level? My vehicle is covered under the original OEM warranty but what about the majority of the people that buy an as is car from Carmax? If it starts, has 4 wheels and the radio works, is that Carmax ready?  To be fair, Carmax did agree to have my almost new truck towed to their facility sometime next week and their experts would remove the alarm and repair the electrical system that shorted out and fried the battery but they refused to provide a loaner or rental car so I will have a vehicle to drive in the meantime. They also refused to pay the dealer a mere $279 to fix it, they cant tow it and fix it for that. They've seen this truck and my business for the last time.  Extremely poor customer service........Be careful!

I am a college student and I work full time. I saved my money up to buy my first car and I chosed to go to Carmax. As a result my car has been in the shop almost every month since I had it. I bought it in 2013. The car shakes, cuts off, has had 4 spark plug issues, constant electrical problems and suspension problems. Everytime I take it in it's a two or three day process only to have the same thing happen over and over again. The warranty I paid $3k for is useless and on causes me more inconvenience. I almost lost my job and failed out of school because of attendance. All the while Carmax gives me the constant runaround and I make my payment ontime.

CarMax Unacknowledged Credit Mgrs & Salesman Memphis Tennessee
I am totallt disappointed with the CarMax and it's staff here in Memphis,TN. After selecting a car and waiting for title information for 2 weeks. The car was taken off of hold 2xs and then on the day I go to pick it up, it is sitting on a truck to be transfered to Jackson, MS.  Then after selecting another car, getting financed and having the car for 2 weeks, I get a call from one of the credit managers that I've got to bring it back because I had not been on my job long enough. Now this is was a CarMax rule they made wit the finance company. However, the finance company did not have any requirements when it came to job length. CarMax did not try to rectify the situation by financing me in house or to find another lender that would accept my job history even though I had the income.  Totally disappointed in their management and handling of this issue. It's embarrasing and a waste of my time and identity.

firstly they force insurance and warranty on you. they have no intention of honoring it. 2000 extra for nothing. the tow to the car center will cost you more than the benefit of using said serviceI bought a 2011 black ford fusion last year in 2014. everything was fine until the summer. I didnt use the car so much because i wasnt taking classes at UofM, which I will get to in a moment.the car has two manufacturing defects. 1-car computer will kill battery if not driven over two week 2-gas flap(no cover) does not seal properly and/or solenoid goes out and needs repeated replacement. ford will not and cannot fix these.I was sold a car with custom rims and low-rider tires with custom lug nuts and wheel covers with hex bits. When I blew a tire outside cookville last thanksgiving, boy was I in for it.Since I could not change the tire, I had to call a cab, borrow my sisters van(and pay for gas), and pay for both tire and nut removal. the covers were put back, causing further issue have you no tool to remove them. pretty or not, useless on side of road.check engine light was on for months. guy who sold me the car tried to buy it back. I told him to keep it and he wasnt to bill me. car is relinquished under ch7. lender isnt getting the message. Not to say roadloands aka drivetime is any better.

CarMax Sold me junk Chattanooga Tennessee
I found a car that I liked on Carmax's website and the sales team had it transferred to Chattanooga for me. I got approved for financing and found out what my down payment was. It started off really good. The day my car came in, my sales woman said it was ready for me to come test drive and decide whether that's the car I want. I go in and test drive, the check engine light pops on. I really liked the car and I was assured that the service department would take good care of me. I went ahead and signed and paid my down payment. They put me in a loaner vehicle. This is where all the trouble begins. Initially my car was in the shop for 13 days, they claim that they had to take it to Knoxville to the Mercedes dealership to fix it. I was very upset that it took that long. I then took possession of the car. It was nasty. Greasy door jams, dog hair all in the back, dirty motor and wheels. I called back up there and I was assured they would detail it the next time I come in. Well they must have knew it was going to be soon. A few days later, the car started stalling on me in intersections and losing power when I drive it. A couple of days after, my whole car started smelling of straight gasoline. We had to drive it with the windows down. I called the service department and they told me the soonest they could get to my car was July 4th. So I drove it until then, almost getting into four accidents due to the stalling and losing power. I show up at the dealership on my service date and they give me another loaner. 11 days later, they tell me my car has been detailed and repaired. I go to pick it up and the car was even nastier than when I brought it in. It looked like someone had been mud bogging in it. My door jams were still nasty so I went back in and insisted this be fixed. So back in the loaner I go, and told to come back in a couple of hours. I come back, they said they could not find a problem with my car. It was still acting up and I checked the door jams and I wiped nothing but black off it. I marched back in there demanding a manager. I spoke with a manager and they said they could appraise my car to trade in. Really? I maybe have drove this car 14-15 days... carmax has a 30 day guarantee. I'm still well within my 30 days. They appraised it from $500 less than what I paid and was told that I would have that on negative equity on a new car. I told them it was absolutely unacceptable since I was sold a lemon. Today, I call to see what can be done. I spoke with the general manager and he basically told me that it's all in my head but he would have service look at the car again and that only if they find a problem they will fix it. I informed them I had another mechanic that is ase certified to look at it and I was told it was a transmission issue. Today is now day 9 without my car again. I told them I demand resolution by Friday, otherwise I have to seek arbitration. I called my lender about what's happening and they are not happy about the situation. So I continue to wait. Whatever you do, do not do business with car max in Chattanooga,TN. I should have went to the dealership my brother or cousin worked at in the first place. I'm very angry and do not feel I have been done right. I was told if I called corporate, they would have the same general manager deal with my problem that isn't aiding me in resolution. I feel stuck paying for a lemon with an extended service plan that's a joke.

Carmax Carmax the way car buying should not be! Carmax Gastonia NC NC
Ok first I must say that at one time I was a happy Carmax customer.... That being said Not anymore!!  It all started about 5 weeks ago after being hit by a drunk driver. My 6 month old new to me  Hyundia Genesis was a total lost..., the first car I've ever had that I truly loved! So after listening to my friendly Carmax salesman Don I was talked into buying a Gap policy....Thank God I did! So far all is well right??? Well after going to buy a replacement twin car I found at Carmax I was told I would need to take a higher interest rate or Wait for my car to pay off... As I have two car payments with carmax finance already..plus a $24,000 car with only 6 months of payments they were asking for a car to be traded. So this is where I turn from happy carmax customer to crazy mad customer!!!! The insurance of the drunk driver (Alstate) agreed to pay all but $2500.00  (thanks gap!) But the check from Alstate was sent to Carmax Finanice and for some strange reason returned to Alstate. Then a second check was mailed and cleared through Carmax Finanice.  Great now my debt was down all but what gap owed.... So off to Carmax to get my car.... Wrong the 2nd check that cleared was then applied back to my account?!!! What??? Then gap still had not paid.... So today I was told gap check was mail to wrong state???? I have money being sent to pay off a debt and they keep sending checks to wrong places..... It is bad enough to know that I was hit by a drunk driver but now being punished by people who can't do their job correctly!!!! I am still car less and Carmax makes it sound as though I have no right to be upset!! Plus when the put the pay off check back on my account from Alstate they added interest! What's Up Carmax...Cant even call you a (buy here pay here used car lot) if you won't take a check!!!!!
