Student Loan Relief is a company that assists people with the complicated ordeal of getting student loan forgiveness or significant payment reduction. Jason M. Spencer stated the following about his company, It’s not necessarily the idea of getting them to go away or anything like that...it is making it more comfortable utilizing the programs that they could qualify for but don’t know about and will probably never know about. Because none of the companies involved or US Governments who create them, lets anyone know. Leads for Student Loan Relief are obtained via word of mouth. They've never done any marketing. Mr. Spencer went on to express the sales process for individuals interested in their services, we either call them or they call us. Then you get to know them a bit, ask them a series of questions that would get them qualified that we get them into certain programs and interview them. The person interviewing them would pass that information to researchers and they would decide which programs to get them into. The customer would get a proposal showing this is where you are - this is what we can offer you, do you want to work with us? If they wanted to move forward they could sign on the dotted line. It is an agreement, it puts everything on paper, and explains that we aren’t making any promises and you don’t pay us until we get that done. CUSTOMER CARE & COMPLAINT RESOLUTION – STUDENT LOAN RELIEF During the on-site interview, Mr. Spencer was asked to describe a situation where a client was not satisfied with the level of service they received. Mr. Spencer expressed that they rarely receive complaints due to their willingness to go above and beyond for their clients. He went on to describe a situation where they took on a client who was already in default. They were able to lower her payments to a manageable fee and ensure that if she made 11 consecutive payments the defaulted loan would be removed from her credit report. Since they had never taken on a client already in default they had they had some hiccups along the way, but were ultimately able to assist their client, maybe we weren't flawlessly perfect, but it was a trail, we did another one, but it was a trial run for someone who was in default. When asked to comment on complaints posted on Ripoff Report's website Mr. Spencer expressed that the complaints were made by an ex-employee, The ex-employee lied about all his competencies and credentials and he was actually working for a competitor. This is all verifiable, I think I uploaded his actual resume that he has on Indeed.com onto Ripoff Report. But, he was actually a plant, working for the competitor. This ex-employee was under the impression that he had a contract with Student Loan Relief that would guarantee him a position. However, when the ex-employee presented what he considered to be a contract the first line stated: This agreement can be canceled by either party any time for any reason. Which essentially negates the ex-employee’s argument. When asked what type of changes they have made to honor their commitment to making things right with the consumer per the request of Ripoff Report, Mr. Spencer expressed that since the comments were made by an employee their company now documents everything. He additionally stated, one thing I am sure to make clear to everyone is that you are not an NFL or NBA player - this is not a contract. I just make sure that people know that if you don’t show up to work - there is no guaranteed pay. We also do a lot more verifying of resumes instead of just trusting them. When asked to comment on complaints posted on Ripoff Report's website Mr. Spencer expressed that the complaints were made by an ex-employee, The ex-employee lied about all his competencies and credentials and he was actually working for a competitor. This is all verifiable, I think I uploaded his actual resume that he has on Indeed.com onto Ripoff Report. But, he was actually a plant, working for the competitor. This ex-employee was under the impression that he had a contract with Student Loan Relief that would guarantee him a position. However, when the ex-employee presented what he considered to be a contract the first line stated: This agreement can be canceled by either party any time for any reason. RJ and Makay, Darin Manis & Misty Rice They have you recruiting for Financial Advisors to move from their current company to their client. You have to schedule so many appointments per month and if you don't schedule one appointment per day they harrass you. You are suppose to be paid for the FA that shows up for the appointment with their client company - a financial planning company. They don't pay you unless the person shows up Monument, Colorado & Boise, Idaho
RJandMakay is a ripoff recruitment company. They have you sign a contract and promise that you will be paid $150 for each FA that you schedule to meet with a Manager with their Financial Planning Company. They have you calling FAs in various States to schedule the appointments. If you don't schedule an appointment they harrass you. You are suppose to schedule so many appointments and if you don't they terminate your contract. You can have so many appointments set up but you will never see the money because they will say that the person never showed up for the appointment. You could have tentative appointments scheduled for future months but you will never receive the money because you are no longer employed and no matter how much work you did to schedule those appointments you will not receive the money and I am sure that they will call those people and get the money for themselves. Grads1st formerly Sudebt will call you, or has radio and facebook ads. In reality you can do this yourself and not pay them $695-$395. When talking to you, what they will do is go through the process of pulling up your loans on the nslds.ed.gov website. You can do this yourself.   Depending on the amount and the type of loan you have, you may qualify for an income driven program. This is a government program, this is not provided by Grads1st. The plans are either Pay As You Earn, Income Based Repayment, and Income Contingent Repayment plan. All you need to do to get into these programs is have a direct loan consolidation, again, something you can do yourself.   If you made it this far; They will go over your budget, and see if you qualify for the Hardship program which does not exist. They will say the fee has been discounted from $1150 down to either $695,$595,$495, or $395. Again this is all scripted.   They are simply taking advantage of people, these people are not counselors they are employees from craigslist, usually 20 somethings. They have no actual certifications, and are paid minimum wage plus a small commission for tricking you into giving them money.

Consumer Advisory: Student loan debt relief companies may cost you thousands of dollars and drive you further into debt By Rohit Chopra Today we took action to put an end to two student loan debt relief scams that illegally tricked borrowers into paying upfront fees for federal loan benefits. In a joint filing with Florida’s Attorney General, we shut down student loan debt relief company College Education Services and, separately, we filed a lawsuit against Student Loan Processing.US for running illegal debt relief services. We allege that both companies exploited vulnerable student loan borrowers, made false promises about their debt relief services, and charged illegal upfront fees. We are warning all student loan borrowers who have trouble managing their student debt to watch out for scams run by companies promising “student debt relief.” These companies prey on distressed borrowers who run into trouble and struggle to figure out what comes next. In some cases, borrowers do not think their student loan servicers can help them and seek help from a third party. Others are lured in by aggressive marketing practices that target the most vulnerable student loan borrowers. In many cases, these companies promise thousands of dollars in savings on your student debt by falsely claiming special expertise or a relationship with the Department of Education, only to enroll you in a payment plan that’s available for free for all borrowers with federal student loans — all at a cost of hundreds of dollars or more. In other cases, these companies fail to deliver on their promises, leaving you with more debt and less time to avoid financial distress or default. Last year, we warned you that you don’t have to pay someone to help with your student loan. You should also be aware of these warning signs to help you avoid student loan debt relief scams and information on getting help if you are a victim of this scam. Warning signs that a student loan debt relief company may be trying to rip you off: Pressure to pay high up-front fees. It can be a sign of a scam when a debt relief company requires you to pay a fee up-front or tries to make you sign a contract on the spot. These companies may even make you give your credit card number online or over the phone before they explain how they’ll help you. Avoid companies that require payment before they actually do anything, especially if they try to get your credit card number or bank account information. Not only is free assistance available through your student loan servicer, many times taking payment for debt relief services before providing help is illegal. Promises of immediate loan forgiveness or debt cancellation. Debt relief companies do not have the ability to negotiate with your creditors for a “special deal” under these federal student loan programs. Payment levels under income driven payment plans are set by federal law and, for most borrowers, loan forgiveness is only available through programs that require many years of qualifying payments. Demands that you sign a “third party authorization.” You should be wary if a company asks you to sign a “third party authorization” or a “power of attorney.” These are written agreements giving them legal permission to talk directly to your student loan servicer and make decisions on your behalf. In some cases, they may even step in and ask you to pay them directly, promising to pay your servicer each month when your bill comes due. Requests for your Federal Student Aid PIN. Be cautious about companies that ask for your Federal Student Aid PIN. Your PIN — the unique ID issued by the U.S. Department of Education to allow access to information about your federal student loans — is the equivalent of your signature on any documents related to your student loan. If you give that number away, you are giving a company the power to perform actions on your student loan on your behalf. Honest companies will work with you to come up with a plan and will never use your PIN to access your student loan information. How to get help Submit a complaint online or call us at (855) 411-2372 if you have been the victim of a student loan debt relief scam or if you are getting runaround from your student loan servicer. You should also instruct your student loan servicer that they should only provide information about your student loan directly to you. Citibank at war with its customers, BEWARE! Sioux Falls South Dakota
I have been a Citibank customer for more years than I can remember. I never had a late payment, and in fact was rewarded with $25,000 credit limits on multiple cards. At one point I was making that much in purchases every month. When my business failed, I had high balances on my credit cards and was unable to pay them off. The result was multiple lawsuits from Citibank. I have attempted to defend myself in court while trying to settle with this company. They hired a law firm, which I have learned since is one of the leading lawfirms for them in my area, suing thousands of customers on their behalf, Petenaude & Felix. These guys are relentless, and have directives to have no mercy. When I attempted to settle, their good faith offer was 80% of the balance, plus all the court costs and legal fees they had accumulated. The balance of the settlement offer is practically the entire balance of the lawsuit, and rising. I have also learned that Citibank is heading up the effort in Washington to make it more difficult to file bankruptcy. They are lobbying and pushing legislation to make credit cards immune to bankruptcy proceedings. The settlement professional I hired to negotiate a settlement has been in business for over 15 years and is one of the top companies in Orange County California. They have key relationships that help them get good settlements. This guy informed me that in all his 15 years, he has never seen anything like what Citibank is doing now. They have literally gone to war with customers who pay late, or stop making payments. Only the very fortunate get settlement deals for less than 80% of the balance. If you are a Citibank customer, I urge you to close your account(s) now, before you get into any trouble. I also believe you should do so to make a statement that you disagree with their effort to make bankruptcy more difficult. Close ALL accounts, not just your credit cards. If you are investing through their MLM company, have a checking account, or any kind of loan - get out of dodge NOW! Citibank has become too large and too powerful for the good of this country. Please, I beg you to terminate your relationship with them, especially if you are a business. I urge you to also write your congressman to oppose this bankruptcy bill in congress! Fight it with a vengence, because it could destroy families all across the U.S. and make it impossible for people to recover from bad luck. Associates Finance Bankers and Enrique Gonzalez are operating a scam.  First of all, his website list fraudulent closed transactions.  IF you do your due diligence, he has not closed the Sonesta Hotel in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica because Sonesta doesn't even have a property in Jaco Beach.  This was confirmed via the board of directors for Sonesta and can be confirmed on Sonesta's website.  His other projects are also fraudulent as he did not close the Century Grand project in Doral Florida as it also can be confirmed via a phone call to the offices of Century Grand in Doral. Another issue is that he lists his office as 2301 87th Ave in Doral and that is an empty space as he doesn't have an office in that building. In getting to the matter at hand, he charged my clients over $45,000 to do a loan and would not even answer a call or an email after receiving the money.  Before paying he constantly harassed my clients to hurry up and pay only to disappear after receiving the money.  He gave us paperwork after paperwork identifying himself as the lender and after finally catching up with him, he states he is not the lender and that he sent the money to the lender.  When asked to provide proof that he sent the money to the lender he can not come up with any proof of doing so.  When we asked why did he state he was the lender and why send the money to him directly instead of the lender, he stated he was a licensed correspondent lender in Florida.  This is also a lie.  He has never had any licenses and any such licenses would only be required for residential mortgages and not commercial.  The only thing that was to have been found close to his business was a license held by his wife Maria and it is expired. My partner wanted to buy an information book that cost 50 dollars. I told her to use my card. Twice she attempted the visa debit card, twice they said invalid etc. so I gave her credit card to use. That's said approved for purchase of a 'living with' PACKAGE. She received one email with about 10 links to pages she could save to her computer. Day or two later I noticed a charge for 197 on the debit card we attempted to use first which said was declined!! Rang bank, they clsbt do anything yet, spent the last 48 hours searching for anyway to contact them. So far no luck. I did manage to access invoices account which shows I have 400 paid and another 100 due. Not only have they continued to charge over and over (I've had to cancel cards to be safe) they allowed the credit card payment to be approved despite my partner putting her name down instead of mine!!!For me, total scam. I have bank dealing with a dispute and I will continue to try contact them.Good luck, hope know one else gets caught up in such a fake scum 'informatipnal' site like this, there is soooooo much free information on the net which is actually written and verified by qualified people such as doctors, psychohistory, psychiatrists.

I enrolled at American Public University as a full-time, first-year student persuing a Bachelor's degree, in March, 2012. I completed my FAFSA, registered for classes and completed the admissions process in March 2012. Classes started May 7, 2012, and I jumped right in, thinking this was going to be great! June 5, I sent an e-mail to their financial aid department, asking when I might expect to receive my share of the $6,047 they had received from DOE for me. My courses cost a total of $3,000, so I should have had over $3,000 coming to me. June 18, I received a check in the amount of $1,022. I sent another e-mail, asking about the remaining $2,000+ I had been expecting. I explained that I was counting on that money, to pay for rent, electricity, internet connection, etc., and a couple of days later, I received an e-mail informing me that because I had dropped one of my classes during the first week, replacing it with another course which was to begin the next month,(in June), I waould have to wait until the second week of July, to get my money. My landlady was not at all happy with the bad news, but she trusted me, like I trusted APU. Today is July 20, and still no check. My landlady could not afford to pay her mortgage with a free-loader for a tennant, so I had to move in with my brother and his family. If I had only known how dearly it would cost me, I would never have enrolled at this internet scam site, cleverly disguised as a university. I dropped all of my classes yesterday, only 9 days from the end of the semester. After losing my home and internet connection, (and a whole lot more than just that!) I had been going to the local Starbuck's, to use their free wifi connection, to do my school work. The last straw came yesyerday, Friday, July 19, 2012. I received an e-mail telling me that I could expect their financial aid department to finish calculating my financial aid disbursement within the next 44 days!! At the end of the message was the remark: Have a great weekend!! Immediately, I dropped all classes for this semester and the next. Screw those ripoff scam artist frauds at American Public University, and the donkeys their mothers rode in on!!! - Phil

California State University San Bernardino: Diploma Mills & Federal Financial Aid Fraud
    We Californian's love our state, there's no better perptartor of misconduct than our public officlas. Here we have CSUSB including state residents in a diploma mill scheme and awarding/recieving federal student loans dollars fraudlently.  Re: Allegations of a Korean & Chinese Diploma Mill on the California State University, San Bernardino campus, satellite classrooms in China and online. I am unable to report through the following link: https://feedback.studentaid.ed.gov/Feedback, due to either a connectivity problem or website issue. Western Association of Schools & Colleges, (WASC Senior) the accrediting and investigative agency for CSUSB has failed to conduct an appropriate investigation of the Korean scheme. Three California State University campus presidents sit as WASB board members. A Chinese diploma mill was was reported in July 2016, a CSUSB WASC liaison was accused of operating that scheme with WASC’ knowledge. Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) has been non responsive and acts as a federally recognized governing body over WASC. I am reporting that the Master's program I am currently enrolled in has substantial plagiarism and academic dishonesty taking place. 70% of the student body are Koreans, some made admissions of a backdoor admission policy. They also had limited English command at the master's level and did not take international standards level exams for admittance into such a program. CSUSB officials mishandled several formal complaint processes, as did their accreditation institution, WASC Senior, and the CSU chancellor's office. I was blocked from access to the CSU Board of Trustees. I was suspended for nine months after I reported and pursued the allegations. CSUSB manufactured misconduct allegations that were never formally and honestly handled. I should have completed in early 2015. CUSB altered state records with witness intimidation in a series of acts to never investigate and conceal the allegations. In July 2016, a 29-year employee made admissions of another diploma mill involving Chinese students that the employee attempted to end. There are numerous documents and communications outlining these issues. I allege that the CSUSB’s formal request for FSA was fraudulent as CSUSB either knew or should have known of the Korean MA TESOL diploma scheme. That CSUSB has utilized public resources, time and their positions as public officials to not investigate the diploma mill accusations. In addition, international student visas would have been falsely issued through CSUSB. I allege that I also fraudulently received FSA as an unwitting actor in CSUSB’s financial and academic plan to bootstrap their independently funded, College of Extended Learning, through these diploma mills. I am requesting a formal investigation conducted by the Office of Inspector General, and not by WASC or CHEA. Email is the best way to communicate with me.

Timeshare GMAC Division Real Eastate telemarketing scheme to rent your timeshare weeks for an upfront charge to your credit card Orlando, Florida
In october 2009, after being contacted several times by telemarketers from GMAC Timeshare Real Estate Division, I agreed to list two weeks at Orange lakes Resort in Orlando.  GMAC charged my credit Card $1599.00 for marketing services.  The telemarketers were very persausive in assuring me that the units would be rented in a short time, in fact when I called after the first week I was told that both weeks were rented for a total of $7,500.00. This of course was not the case, and when I called again to inquire about payment, they had no information about a completed sale.  I then suspected fraud, and wrote a letter of cancellation and requested a full refund. The Manager, Frankie, then called me and said he would issue a refund of $899.  He assured me GMAC was a reputable company and would do everything to rent my units. I have heard nothing since and am still out the $700.00.  This company should be investigated by the Florida State Attorney General.

Student Loan Help Direct, Joseph Edwards, Sarah They will not issue a refund for services Non-rendered. in the amont of $697 dollars Los Angeles California
I was given a referal by a Co-worker of mine to call a Student Loan advocate to get on one of the many Obama Student Loan Relief programs. My co-worker gave me a number of a man by the name, Jospeh Edwards. I proceeded to call him shortly after. Even with a degree in Criminal Justice I should have known better, but because of the amount of student loans that I current have I wanted to take action as soon as possible. When I got in contact with Jospeh Edwards, like any con-man he very keen and insistant upon about providing his services for the sake of saving me money. Keep in mind, I had not done my homework to know that there are serveral programs out there for different suitations and income levels. Jospeh Edwards only spoke to me about the income based repayment plan where you pay the same amount each month(unless you income changes) and after 10yrs. whatever is left of the remaining balance will be ratified and you will owe nothing. Sounds good right! sign me up. Joseph said that I need to make a down payment on my account so I can show the student loan people that I was serious about paying off my loan and so that he could get started on my account. Jospeh gave me an amount of $692 and told me that was based of the kind of plan that I have and so I gave him my acct information and decided to do a one time payment as supposed to several over the course of a month.Flag #1. He asked for my entire SSN# instead of the last four numbers like most accredited debt collectors. But again I gave it to him because my co-worker said she had just started paying back her loans. Next he asked for my birthday and said your last name is ***** right and I said yes.Flag #2. He asked for my mother's maiden name and at the time I thought, that sounds like a security question but again I gave it to him. After pulling up my information, Informs me that I have 10 different student loans the total amount and said that I was in default. Jospeh then took some income information and said he was calculating a possible amount for a payment plan.Flag #3. Jospeh explained to me what would happen if I didn't get out of default. He said that he needed to apply for my debt consolidation loan as soon as possible so my account can get out of default and I can rebuild my Credit. Joseph told me that garnishment was about to happen and that they can take up to 40% of your income and that's when I told him that I thought in the state of Michigan it was 15%? and he replied, yeah, anywhere from 15 to 40%!!!!!!!That's when I knew something was really wrong. Later on in the privacy of my own home I beganto do my research about the different debt relief programs. I did not know about studentloanhelpdirect.com/disclaimers.html and realized that the man by the name of Jospeh Edwards was not actually a Certified and Professional student loan debt relief account customer service rep from an accredited student loan vendor but was actually a person off the street who entered in my account info on studentloans.gov which is the national database for those whom have ever taken out a student loan!!!!!!! This complete stranger that I knowingly gave all of my information to simply logged on to the site that most people don't even know about, and was going to apply for a student consolidation loan and or program pretending to be me!I am asking for a refund in the amount of $692 because upon going unto StudenLoads.gov I immediately signed up for a consolidation loan.The Second thing I did was send who I've come to know as Joseph Edwards an email informing him that I no longer require his services as I have already completed a student loan consolidation loan on my own behave. Not only did I recieve any form of acknowlegdement and I have tried to contact the number from which I have directly to him on and it goes to a pre-recorded message that says to call the main number and simply leave a message and someone will get back with me. I have also tried to call a woman by the name of sarah who has left me voicemails asking me to sign the electronic pen and her number goes to her voice mail.I understand that I gave him my bank info that same day and it was electronically processed. I all want is for the sum total of $692.00 transferred back into my account. I know that him nor anyone in this agency perfrom, start or complete any task, job, and or payment plan on my behalf because I did not give Him nor any of his contituents a copy of my Tax Return nor did I sign the electronic pin with my signiture agreeing to pay for any of the services that he provided.  I did not sign anything giving him nor anyone else the authorization to file for a consolidation loan and or repayment plan in my place and on my behalf.

September 2004 brings the start of school, graduation, and a UOP labor dispute. I wanted to finish my degree and thought an online course would be perfect. Everything was rosy when I walked through my class life with the counselor. However, he failed to mention just what would be required, and just how much time I'd have to devote to get my degree. They make it sound so simple. But when I stopped living my life and only went to work and school, it got to be rediculous. I found myself up until 2 am just to GET BY! That's not even getting a decent grade. And the sad thing is, I was NOT taught anything, and certainly wouldn't have been by my teacher. Instead, the classroom activity is responding to other student's comments. I don't want to learn what Joe Schmoe and his ABC Company does, I want to learn the FACTS. I'm not paying the exorbitant rates this crackpot university (if you can call it that) charges to have my 10 fellow classmates run the class. The sad thing is, that I wound up teaching my professor a thing or two. Where do they find these people anyway? Most barely have the time it takes to devote to the class themselves, let alone what is expected of you. And as a professional, it's rediculous the method in which they organize themselves. I honestly don't know how they stay in business other than being SCAM ARTISTS. If I ran my business the way that they do, everyone would be out of a job and the government would be breathing down our necks for reprisal. Now, I quit after ONE class. Because I quit, my student loans were dropped, and I'm into them for about $1000. They have sent collectors after me and have ruined my credit rating. I think it's rediculous what you have to go through to get these people to stop harassing you. They're LEACHES! If anyone who reads this is interested in a class action lawsuit, let me know. Because I know in my case, there was NOT full disclosure of the requirements of my time. I was not informed of what to expect... and dissapointments only follow. Literacy Repair Services/Student Loan Resolutions/Charles Harper Harassed me and used profanity when I didn't want to use his company!! Internet
 I wanted to learn more about student loan debt forgiveness. Mr. Harper contacted me a few times via text and email. I explained to him that I am pregnant and have been really sick but I would get back to him when I could. Something seemed off about our conversation so I decided to look up the company he said he worked for. Originally said he worked for Student Loan Resolutions and when I looked it up, there were some questionable reports out there on the company.I decided not to follow up with him and when he contacted me again I simply stated I was no longer interested. He replied with, Why not don't you want to see if you can save money on your loans instead of acting sick? I was so offended, I told him I would report him if there was anyone to speak to but his company is a joke. I then told him not to contact me anymore.He continued to send multiple messages to me, Listen b***** you don't tell me what to do I cary the ball sack aroud here, and just so you know your mother was a joke when she had you. Make sure you check who you are working with when it comes to student loan recovery! Scary people out there and now this guy has all my contact information.

I simply cannot understand why anyone could be proud of this learning institution. Prior to enrolling, I made it clear to the enrollment counselor that I was on Social Security disability for a mental illness. I was never told of any ADA accomodation, I was never explained the cost of tuition, never received my student award letter, and was rushed into starting earlier than I wanted to by the rhetorical scare tactic. I was never sent a catalog, which the University of Phoenix website specifically states is due the student. I told all but one of my four instructors about my illness because I felt they had a right to know. The instructor that did not know I was disabled passed me with anA and the other instructor gave me a D- after I had suffered an anxiety attack when the school browsers went down. Had it not been for the one instructor, my educational career would be done for, and my four year old son and I would be homeless. In the past five weeks, going on six now, my weight has gone from 140 lbs. to 117 lbs., and I have become extremely ill as a result of this situation. I have caught one counselor in a blatant lie regarding this grade grievance and a school policy which contradicts itself. I have had eight different people read the same policy, only for them to reach the same conclusion...it does not make sense. Just writing this is difficult and is causing me a great deal of stress. I am now afraid to even enter the website, and two nights ago, due to the growing psychological stress, came running out of bed in my sleep and hit the wall very hard causing myself a concussion. I have communicated my psychological distress with my instructors, as well as counselors, and they could care less. I am getting sicker by the day, and I have had to have my psychotropic medications elevated to the point that I cannot even function in a capacity to do my schoolwork, which at first was very stimulating, and made me very happy. I cannot discuss all aspects of this situation here, because I am terrified of this school and I feel so very sick. The elevation in meds is not helping to counter this psychological damage. All I wanted was to get off of the system before there is no more Social Security, and build a more comfortable way of life for my son and myself, because I was a rarity...a high-functioner for my illness. I had been told that University of Phoenix had a good reputation, so I was excited to join. I cannot get phone calls returned, especially by the person who holds the ADA information I had to teach myself to scan. I even took psychological tests and sent them in so they had an understanding of how this situation has so adversely affected me, and to give them some idea of my mental health conditions. As for Robert in New Mexico...are you proud of knowing that uop does this to the disabled? If you are, you are the one that needs your head examined. I have a genius level IQ and they are doing a good job of destroying it. I feel like a fool, and when they knew I was mentally ill, they took full advantage from the very start. To the man in California, I wouldn't hire a UOP student, either, because here is one fool telling you that I am on your side. No one in that school can be trusted. As long as they can get money out of you, that is all they care about. I am not the only student in peril with this learning institution. My life is now in dire straits, and I need help. I cannot elaborate any further because of fear, and will not divulge those trying to help me for that reason. I am not interested in class action. I do, however, need legal counsel. I live on disability and have a dependent. I live on less than 10, 000 dollars per year. This is just a few of many issues I am facing with this school. Can anyone help me? I need help and a lawyer with teeth and an ability for contingency, as I have found a great deal of unsavory information. I am case building when I have the ability. This company is a total scam. They lure you in by your desire to further or complete your education online. They tell you all this bull about how you can do this with your tuition reimbursement and how they need a $50 fee to process your application. They process you and then sign you up. You are supposed to have a financial counseling session, but the next thing you know, you are signed up and ready to go. They send you books, etc. in the mail that just arrive at your home. Then, when you think, ok, I'll try this...they hit you with a $4300.00 bill for 2 30 day classes. Yes, I said $4300.00 for 2 30 day classes. Then, when you question them about why you were not told that this was the charge prior to sending you books, etc...you are faxed your application agreement which in small letters states that you agree to any and all fees!!! Is this not a rip off??? I mean, they lure you in and then hit you with a big bill after you think you are only applying to see if you would be approved. Get real. I only hope more people do not get lured into this school's(if it really is a school) crap. Also, when you tell them you are not paying, they tell you, well you know, you can't get a home loan, etc. because this is like not repaying a student loan. How over the barrel have they got you?? The funny thing about this school is that before I even decided to go here I had asked someone who went there before me what is it like? and I remember so vividly her saying don't go there I didn't understand why, I just figured maybe it would be a different experience since she was going at night and I was about to be a full time day student. BUT she was so right. It doesn't matter if you go during the day, night or weekend you will get the same treatment and that is just that you are a complete number to this school. I knew it early on even in the admissions process. The admissions rep was so pushy I remember leaving that day and thinking, did I just sign up for this school? they say anything to get you to sign on the dotted line. I remember my rep was like well how soon can you start and I said well I would need a little time to make sure I am ready to be back in school his response to me was well a new class starts on Monday, can you do that? We were having this discussion on a Wednesday evening!!! But I went along with it, it sounded all so good that I didn't want to have to wait till the next classes started which I was told was every 3 months, when actually they start every five weeks. From the very first day of class I knew early on that it was a mistake. My first class was scheduled to start at 8 am. My teacher didn't even show up until 20 after 8 with no reason for her tardiness. It was just so normal to her it seemed. I don't even remember what we did the 1st day but I can tell you it was probably sitting there waiting for her while she went to go make copies or whatever her reason for leaving the room was. This behavior continued through out the 9-month process. Teachers are late, they don't show up, they talk to you about gossip about the school, they are unqualified. The list is endless. And the classes, the classes are suppose to train you to be in the medical field and feel good and confidant. But every class no matter what the subject matter is is only 5 weeks long. You have certain classes like computer applications that is so easy that you finish the material in the 1st week, and then have 4 weeks of just sitting there killing time until your next waste of time class. But the problem is, is that other classes that most people need more help in like Venipuncture/hematology/phlebotomy that class is only 5 weeks long as well, and EKG's the same thing. There is no way that in a class of 30 people with a retard for a teacher that you can learn how to draw blood from a REAL LIVE PERSON in the field and run an EKG on a possible heart condition patient in 5 weeks, yet you can just breeze right through. The tests are open book, the finals are a joke, you pretty much have to teach yourself. So, then why am I paying $12,000 to teach myself. There are fights between teachers and students. Students and teachers, Admissions and teachers it's all just one big mess. Any time you complain it doesn't get taken care of. The 2nd week our class all decided that something just wasn't right. This wasn't turning out like we expected. We never got homework, we never learned a full 2 hours of the subject that was suppose to be taught to us. So we went to administration, and they took time out of their day and sat and talked with us. Writing down all of our concerns, assuring us they would rectify the problem and come back to us with the results. IT NEVER HAPPENED. You can breeze through and get all A's without so much as attending class, paying attention, studying, doing your homework, missing tests. It was like kinder care. I would advise anyone who is thinking about going here to NOT GO Find another school or try and go to college. These trade schools just sweep you trough the process and don't really care what you learn. Everyday it is something new, bomb threats, stolen property, teacher gossip, waiting for your teacher, students doing drugs and stealing supplies, learning that the test you were suppose to have that day isn't happening that day, inept substitute teachers, rules that apply one day and don't apply the next day, and the admission rep who lured you in, I guarantee after 3 months of you being at that school you wont see him or her anymore, they just disappear. Maybe because they know that the person they lured in is going to come to them for answers. Someone told me not to go here and I didn't listen, listen to me, and don't go. And if you are from around Bucks County/Philadelphia just go to a community college. It will be worth it. And in other news: this is a report about CEC, which is the parent company of Sanford Brown. The story ran on CBS news (60 minutes) google it yourself if you don't believe me! (CBS) Are you interested in a new career? Are you looking for specialized training and a high-paying job in computers, fashion or health care? Well, a lot of people must be, because companies selling that dream, the for-profit career colleges, are one of the fastest growing area in the field of education. It's a multi-billion dollar business with most of the revenues guaranteed by the federal government, and until recently the industry was the darling of Wall Street. Now, it's under scrutiny, with one of the biggest players facing allegations that it deceived investors, the federal government, and students, who say they've been taught a very expensive lesson. Correspondent Steve Kroft reports. If you've ever watched daytime TV, you've probably seen one of Career Education Corporation's ads offering students a brand-new life. Ever think you could be part of this? With the right training, you can! That one was for the Katharine Gibbs schools, which were bought by Career Education Corporation in 1997, and make up just a small part of its scholastic empire. A year ago, CEC was one the hottest stocks on the NASDAQ exchange, with five years of record growth and $1 billion in annual revenue. It comes from nearly 100,000 students at 82 different campuses, taking classes in everything from computer animation to the culinary arts. Brooks College in Long Beach, Calif., offers training in fashion and design, but its graduates have a special nickname for their alma mater: Crooks College. Why? Cuz they robbed us, says one graduate. Everything was a lie, says another. What was the biggest lie? Job placement -- 98 percent job placement, several graduates said. They said, like, starting $30,000 a year, $30,000 or more. Brooke Shoelberg, Chanee Thurston, and Amanda Harris enrolled to study fashion merchandising after the school signed them up for tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, and showed them videos promising to help them get jobs with companies like Giorgio Armani. Did Brooks College find any of them a job? No, they said. Did it make an attempt to find them a job? Again, they said no. The school declined to comment, but 60 Minutes knows that all three women graduated near the top of their classes. A year later, none had been able to find the kind of job she was supposedly trained for. Brooke was managing a telephone store; Amanda was unemployed; and Chanee was selling T-shirts. All of them went heavily into debt to get a two-year degree they now believe has little value. The school has no credibility with the fashion industry, whatsoever, says Thurston. Complaints, laid out in a number of lawsuits against CEC by former students, investors, and employees, are now under investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The lawsuits and the investigations were cited by CEC as the reason for declining a request by 60 Minutes for an on-camera interview. But there were plenty of other people willing to talk on-camera. One man, who wore sunglasses and a visor, said, I am completely embarrassed that I ever worked at Brooks College or for CEC. This man, along with two of his former colleagues, Barry Ross and Eric Shannon, used to work at Brooks College. They say there were some dedicated teachers there, but that the administration was more interested in making money than in educating students. Ross' title was admissions representative. But Shannon says we were really sales people. Selling the dream, basically, says Ross. We're selling you that you're gonna have a 95 percent chance that you are gonna have a job paying $35,000 to $40,000 a year by the time they are done in 18 months, says Shannon. We later found out it's not true at all. Yeah, it wasn't true at all, says Ross. According to an evaluation report from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Only about 38 percent of brooks students ever finish the program, and the average starting salary for all graduates is less than $11 dollars per hour. The admission counselors told 60 Minutes they were expected to enroll three high school graduates a week, regardless of their ability to complete the coursework. And if they didn't meet those quotas, they were out of a job, which is what the man in sunglasses says happened to him. They all say the pressure produced some very aggressive sales tactics. In that way, the job was a lot like a used-car lot, because if I couldn't close you, my boss would come in, try to close you, says Shannon. The enrollment fee was $50. You need three things, says the man in sunglasses. You need $50, a pulse, and you've got to be able to sign your name. That's about it. You have to sign your name to a government loan form. The government-backed student loans are crucial to the entire industry. In 2003, they made up nearly 60 percent of CEC's revenues. And in order to be eligible for that money, CEC is required to provide students with accurate information about job placement. Would CEC exist if it weren't for government loans? I don't believe that they would be a $1 billion company in 10 years, if it weren't for the federal government loan programs, says Tami Hanson, who was once the national manager in charge of student placement for all of Career Education Corporation's campuses in the United States. Hanson, who was fired a few months ago, was one of more than 50 current or former employees with whom 60 Minutes spoke at more than a dozen schools. All had variations of the same story. What was the corporate culture like? All about the numbers, all about the numbers, says Hanson. Getting students enrolled, getting students in the seats. Keeping students in the seats, getting them passed enough to graduate, and then trying to get them any job we could. But getting students any job they could did not necessarily mean getting them jobs they were trained for. And she says a job placement could mean just about almost anything. It may be that, you know, they end up placing them folding T-shirts at the Gap at a fashion, as a fashion grad -- which is fine, but not what they were promised in the beginning, says Hanson. And a job they could've gotten without paying $15,000 or $30,000, says Kroft. Actually, it is more like $30,00 $60,000 and $80,000 depending on the program, says Hanson. Hanson says the quality of education varies from school to school, and that there are some very good programs and highly motivated students who find successful careers. But she says too many students simply don't have the aptitude or the skills necessary to succeed in class or the workplace. They were not prepared, but at the same time, the instructors were really pressured to pass them through that class to keep them in school, says Hanson. So CEC could keep collecting the government money? So they could keep the revenue, says Hanson. CEC has denied these and other allegations in response to various lawsuits, and it says it's made compliance with government regulations and investigating complaints a top priority. Chairman John Larson wrote 60 Minutes saying, We'll investigate the situations cited in your report and take appropriate corrective action as violations are identified. And it did not take long to find a violation. To see how the admissions process works, 60 Minutes Associate Producer Jennifer MacDonald, armed with a hidden camera, went to a number of CEC schools in the New York area. At the Katharine Gibbs School, she began by asking about graduation rates. She was told that 89 percent graduated. But that wasn't even close. According to the Department of Education's most recent figures from 2003, this school's graduation rate was 29 percent not 89 percent, a difference of 60 points. Federal regulations require that prospective students be given the official statistics in writing prior to enrollment and the admission representative seemed ready to sign MacDonald up. When MacDonald wanted to know about a career in fashion, this is what she was told: These jobs pay a lot of money. You're looking at, if you take this craft and be very serious about it, you can make anywhere from hundreds of thousands to if you go up to be a designer. But not everything at Career Education Corporation is fashion or business. Its Sanford Brown Institutes prepare students for careers in health care; training ultrasound and cardiovascular technicians; and medical and surgical assistants. The admission representative told the associate producer that the school was highly selective. So MacDonald did everything she could to disqualify herself for admission to become a medical assistant, a nine-month program that costs almost $13,000 prepares students for entry-level positions. When lousy grades and prior drug use weren't enough to get her rejected, she tried a different approach. She told them she had a problem with blood. The representative told her that 98 percent of our students have a problem with blood. The first day of the module, they don't hand you a syringe and say, 'Go for it.' The school did require the associate producer to take an admission test. She intentionally flunked it, getting just 7 out of 50 questions correct. But the school allowed her to take another test with different questions. This time, the admission representative said she had doubled her score to 14 out of 50, and that was just good enough to qualify for admission. Although it was easy to get in, all the counselors told MacDonald she would have to work hard and attend class to complete the course. But Hanson says what CEC is most interested in is tuition. They want to say that the student comes first, but I think it becomes obvious to anybody that works in the school, that the student does not come first, says Hanson. Where does the student come? The student comes with how many dollar signs are attached to them. And anything after that is secondary, says Hanson. CEC is not the only publicly traded career-school operator in trouble with the federal government. Last fall, the Department of Education handed out its largest fine ever -- $9.8 million dollars to the Apollo Group and its University of Phoenix for admitting unqualified students to boost enrollment. And a year ago, federal agents raided the headquarters and 10 campuses of ITT Educational Services, investigating charges of falsified grades and attendance records. Nick Glakas is president of the Career College Association, a Washington lobbying group that represents 1,100 career colleges in the United States. This is not an industrywide problem. And let me address the whole question of being under investigation, says Glakas. Allegations from a legal standpoint are not facts and are not evidence. Glakas says career colleges are a passport into the middle class for millions of people, a gateway to the American dream. Twenty-five percent of our students are working adults. Fifty percent are minority. Seventy percent are the first in their family to go to college. This is an extraordinary success story, says Glakas. Rep. Maxine Waters, who represents the poorest district in Los Angeles, isn't so sure. For the past 15 years, she's been the industry's most persistent critic. I have seen young person after young person who simply wanted to get trained for a trade, for a job, get ripped off, says Waters. Why hasn't anything been done? These private post-secondary schools are very sophisticated in its politics, and they actually have members of Congress who protect them, she says. Over the past two years, career colleges and lending institutions that benefit from government-backed student loans handed out more than a million dollars in campaign contributions to members of the House Education Committee. Half of that money went to the committee's two ranking members: Chairman John Boehner of Ohio and Buck McKeon of California. Both declined requests for interviews. As for the sales reps whom 60 Minutes spoke with, Barry Ross has filed a discrimination lawsuit against CEC. Eric Shannon now works in finance, and the young man is the sunglasses is selling cars. And the Brooks College graduates? They feel betrayed. They were sold the idea that an investment in education would change their lives. This investment did, but not in the way they were promised. My mother told me to declare bankruptcy and I'm only 21, says Thurston. She said it'll go away in 10 years so when I'm 31 I can start my life all over. But we are all students that did everything we were supposed to, we gave it our all, says Amanda Harris. And we're still jobless. You know, like, it doesn't make sense. I began attending Stenolife.com/Simplysteno.com online so I can complete my training in stenography and get a job as a court reporter. While I was paying with my hard earned money for the tuition for this online program, Marc Greenberg, the owner, made this profession of court reporting look too good to be true. He wrote in his lessons (which weren't even live recordings, as I was supposed to have) stating that it would be very easy to get a job once I completed his course. Meanwhile, I spent tens of thousand of dollars on professional equipment as well as Case Catalyst Software, Elan Mira G2 Stenograph Machine, also his tuition,  and being assured by him that I would be making all the money back soon enough. Then he gave me the sales pitch that there  are so many options for professions in court reporting including:   Broadcast captioner, CART provider, closed captioner, etc. But Mr. Greenberg failed to inform me that  all of this cost three times the tuition for more training, in which neither I nor anybody else is guaranteed a job after spending thousands and thousands of dollars for nothing, and still be unemployed. In addition, this school leaves all the students on the lerch to learn this complicated software (the Case Catalyst Version 11) on their own. This software alone costs $4,000 and then it is impossible to learn on your own. He failed to tell me how expensive and complicated this software is, and that I would have to spent more money just to hire somebody to teach me this. Now, when I enrolled in the school he did not tell me that he doesn't help his students find internships upon completion of the court reporter program. And I was not aware that court reporters have to be referred by a school or by somebody who has been already in the profession for years in order to obtain an internship. Meanwhile, here I am upon having wasted all this time and all this money for absolutely nothing, still trying to get an internship, still unemployed, not to mention that I am still struggling trying to learn the software. I tried to talk to Mark Greenberg and ask him to help me, and he refused, saying, There's not much I can do for you. You have to say ambicious. This is the most stupidest, most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If I wasn't ambicious, I wouldn't have completed this program in record time. While it takes the average court reporter to be trained in at least five to six years or more, I've done it in two years. Then this moron had the nerve to hang up on me. Recently, through research I found his school is not education affiliated nor is it accredited. Under the law I understand that any school offering further education (trade school, college, further education or career institute, etc.) is supposed to be on the accredited list or posted on a list for education affiliated schools with the NCRA. As a result, his school is not recognized by any court reporting agencies, nor under the Judicial Law in the Courts. Please, it would a great advantage for all court reporting students to have this rip-off school investigated so that this will not  happen to anyone else who would like to go into the court reporting profession. This school should not get away with what Mr. Greenberg did to me, or any other students spending hard earned money for this highway robbery. Look forward to hearing from you.
