Until just recently, I was an office manager/ relocation specialist for Relocation Van Lines, Inc located at 2333/2327 W. Nelson, Chicago, IL. 60618. It was brought to my attention when the DOT (Federal Department Of Transportation) contacted me as to what would be needed for a yearly audit. When going through this list (as this was the first time I was to represent the company for an audit) I noticed that nearly everything that was done and the manner in which it was performed was out right against some law. Listed below you will brief examples.

Weight tickets: Traveling long distance is based on weight. The truck is weighed in before and after each pick up to determine the price. Looking over at least 40% - 50% of the long distance contracts... maybe more, I noticed the contract price did not match that of the weight ticket. Example: A customer was quoted for 5,000 lbs when after the weigh in, the weight was actually 2,000 lbs. The customer would then receive a bill for the 5,000 lbs. Normally as long as the quote does not go over, the customer does not complain and is completely unaware that they are paying hundreds maybe thousands of dollars more than they actually need to.

Drivers: Upon asking the drivers to submit to drug testing, 2 out of 3 declined openly stating they would fail. On many occasions arriving to work intoxicated. This was brought to the owners attention and instead of the owner terminating their employment, I witnessed a phone call offering a loan amount from the owner himself to purchase a "detox kit" for one of the drivers.

Movers: Many of the movers are not authorized to work in the United States. Many of them are in fact "day laborers" that come with no experience what so ever.

Complaints of theft: With my time at Relocation Van Lines, Inc. I have received and overheard situations with co workers where movers have out right stolen goods. One case in particularly, the movers actually pried open a lock box and stole jewelry according to this customers complaint. Clearly I am not an investigator so I speak only of the mass calls of theft complaints.

Packing over charges: Packing material makes up for a lot of the income for Relocation Van Lines, Inc as well as many other companies. When sending out a crew, the dispatch specifically states that the foreman is to collect "x" amount of dollars for the move they are to go on. For example... all though you have completely packed everything accordingly, the foreman of Relocation Van Lines, Inc will in fact find hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of material that needs to be used. Their excuse; if it is not packed exactly this way, you will not be covered by insurance should something happen. In my experience with this company, I can honestly tell you folks that more than 80% of long distance customer have a problem either with over charges, missing items or the very very very common, broken items. "Missing" plasma televisions are quite a problem as well here. If lucky, they are offered the $0.60 per pound per article and the door is then shut in their face sort of speak.

The company operates with many independent contractors. The office hold one individual now that is capable of reasoning in fluent English. They do not own their own trucks although they do tell customers that they do, and upon arrival you will find an "Enterprise" truck. They state the Enterprise truck was rented because all of their other trucks are out on a job... this way they comeout looking like a devoted company to the customer.

The BBB report list is out dated and will show good standing. I know this because I was the one handling the cases. The company averages approximately 3 complaints a month and with my time at this company I was overwhelmed with the complaints in which case ultimately lead Relocation Van Lines, Inc. to hire an outside claims department to assist.

When choosing your company, be very careful. Sadly this goes for many moving companies.
