Received an email to participate in a customer service survey for my cable provider, CenturyLink. (I see elsewhere that these surveys are for many other different organizations including banks, Microsoft and so on.)

At the end of the survey, you are offered various "gift" for completing the survey. One was a $4.95 e-cig Starter Kit. The $4.95 was for shipping and handling.

My credit card was charged that day by Vapor Smarts for $4.95.

15 days later, a charge for $110 appeared on my account from Renew Cigs.

I can see from reports filed elsewhere, that if you call to cancel this order, you will be told that it had to be cancelled within 14 days of placing the original order.

I have not received any product from these rip-off artists.

Will update when I talk to the company on Monday, though many people report that it is difficult to get through to them on the phone.

There may have been very fine print or a separate "Terms and Conditions" indicating that I was signing up for a subscription service, but if so, I did not see. The main offer was a starter kit.

While I do NOT recall seeing these terms and conditions anywhere in their offer, I have found them on their website.

Key features of this scam:

  1. You have 14 days to try our amazing product. After 15 days, I have NOT received their "amazing product," but elsewhere on the web, they start the clock from the day you place the $4.95 trial offer, not from when you actually receive it.
  2. The first billing, $117.30 in my case is for a "Starter Kit you already received on day 14" Of course, I have not received anything from them at this point.
  3. In another 15 days, and every 30 days after this, they will bill the card for $69.63 plus $4.95 shipping and handling.


3. TERMS OF TRIAL PROGRAM 
You only pay for shipping and handling in the amount of $4.95. You'll have 14 days to try our amazing product. If you are not satisfied with the product for any reason during the trial, call customer service 1-888-576-6171 Monday to Friday 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM EST to cancel and return the starter kit. If you do not call to terminate your enrollment by the end of your Trial Period, you will automatically be enrolled in the Company's Renew Cigs Auto-Ship Program ("Renew Cigs Auto-Ship Program"). As a member of the Renew Cigs Auto-Ship Program, your credit card will be charged $109.63 (USD) for the Starter Kit you already received on day 14. Then 30 days from your initial order of the Starter Kit, and every 30 days thereafter, you will be sent 10 refills, and your credit card will automatically be charged $69.63 (the "Monthly Fee") plus shipping and handling of $4.95. Please note that Florida residents must add sales tax, and the Company will assess and collect state sales taxes on all charges for Florida residents.
Upon enrolling in the Company's Trial Program (the "Trial Program"), the Company will send you a Starter Kit which includes one travel case, one long-life rechargeable battery, 5 cartridges, one USB charger, one VIP Renew Cigs Membership card, a lifetime warranty on the battery, and an instruction manual. Orders are shipped from 2-3 business days (Monday through Friday) using our standard UPS shipping method. Actual delivery time of the parcel averages from 5-7 business days and will vary by region. Please be advised that shipments are not sent on Saturdays, Sundays, or any Holidays. The only charge to you for enrolling in the Trial Program is a non-refundable shipping and handling charge of $4.95 (USD). In other words, upon enrolling in the Trial Program, you authorize the Company to charge your credit card than $4.95 (USD). Please note that Florida residents must add sales tax to this shipping and handling charge, which may result in the shipping and handling charge to Florida residents being greater than $4.95 (USD) As a member in the Trial Program, you have 14 days from the date of your enrollment to try the Product (the "Trial Period"). Please note that delivery time is included in the Trial Period, 
and will accordingly reduce the number of days allocated to your Trial Period. If you want to terminate your enrollment in the Program for any reason, call 1-888-576-6171 during the Trial Period. Upon requesting a termination of your enrollment in the Trial Program, you will receive a return merchandise authorization ("RMA") number. In order to complete your termination of enrollment from the Program, you must return the Product, and conspicuously include your RMA number on the package returning the Product. All items included in the Starter Kit must be included in your return package in order to complete the termination of your enrollment in the Trial Program. Provided that you return the Starter Kit within thirty days from the date you ordered the Starter Kit, the Company will not charge you another dollar. If you call to terminate your enrollment in the Trial Program within the trial period, but do not return the Starter Kit within 30 days of placing your order, your credit card will automatically be charged $109.63 (USD) for the Starter Kit you received but did not timely return.
Refunds will not be given on packages marked "Return To Sender." All Starter Kit returns must be sent to DTS Direct Mail and Fulfillment Services, Inc., c/o of Renew Cigs, 5800 Miami Lakes Drive, Miami Lakes, Florida 33014.
Because a variety of instances beyond our control may occur at your shipping address, you agree that any delivery confirmation (even those that do not include a signature) provided by the selected shipping provider is deemed sufficient proof of delivery to the credit card holder.
