I needed a computer, and could not afford to buy one in one lump sum, so I went to Rent-A-Center East Orange. I have the computer now, but I started to figure there has to be something wrong with this. A Dell commercial came on where they were showing the same exact computer.(Dell Windows XP). That computer came to about $500, Rent-A-Center is charging me $2,131.34.
How is it possible to charge quadruple what the item is worth. Where I live there are a lot of poor people who make a honest living, they just don't have a bunch of cash or credit cards to lay out.
Rent-A-Center is suppose to be here to help us be able to afford some of the things that you need in this day and age (such as a computer). They should not get away with this.

Why Do You Think It's Called Rent-A-Center?

Don't mean to be rude but why do you think it's called rent-a-center? Go ahead and figure out what it will cost you to rent a $10,000 vehicle from a rental car place. $40-$50,000? The only difference is you'll never own the vehicle. All these rental places are ripoffs unless you're renting the stuff for a short period of time, like moves and such. Any other poor fool is just wasting their money big time. If they were smart, they'd just save up the money and buy it outright at a fourth or less of the price. But that's why they're in the situation to begin with. You found you could have bought a new computer for $500, instead you paid these crooks $2,131.34 at $42 per week. In 12 weeks you could have saved up the money, bought the computer and been $1631 richer.

RAC only helps itself

RAC only helps itself. The only interest is to supply items consumers "want" and an opportunity to provide impulse buying power to those without the funds to obtain the merchandise otherwise.
You would be better off simply returning the system to RAC. The money you will make in payments, put in savings until you have enough to make a cash purchase.
At least when you make the cash purchase you will get a PC that is more state of the art. The PC you "rented" from RAC is 3 generation at best. By the time you pay it off, the value of the PC will be less than $100.00 for resale.

The RAC is not there to provide you with goods that you cannot afford to pay for in cash. They are there to make money.
Why not buy a used system for cash next time thus avoiding paying too much?
