I recently rented a tv from rent a center and it broke i had to pay 700.00 to get it fixed, I called rent a center and they would not fix it. i am still under my contract and they would not honor it. I have about 900.00 left on my agreement and I refuse to pay them any more and I refuse to give my tv back. They have threaten me and all of my references that i used to get it. They told me today that They have issued a warrent for my arrest. They are scammers for sure!! I want to know what should I do. I have never been arrested and I do not want to be either can anyone help?

thanks

chain of command

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 14, 2006

Terri, regaurdless of your experience at the store level your best bet is to contact someone further up the chain. I would guess that currently you are only dealing with co-workers at a store level, account managers, i/o's and assistants. Try getting in touch with home office, you can find their number on rent-a-center.com. They should be able to take your complaint straight to the market level or possibly higher.

The other thing to remember is that, at Rent-A-Center, we offer a life time re-instatement policy. Meaning that even if you were to return your broking tv, you would be able to take the come-back coupon, that should be sent to you by mail, to any other store and pick up where you left off

it is their responsibilty

You should have never had to pay for the tv to be fixed. They are a bunch of bullys for threating you. I would definately take them to small claims court. You will win. They can only take you to court if not much money was paid on it and win you really need to follow through with this. They will say and do anything to get money. Or just return the piece

do not rent from any rental companies

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 18, 2006

some advice to everyone, dont rent anything!

If you need a frig or a washer & dryer thats one thing. if you want a tv, you dont need a tv, buy a 13' or 19' cheapo tv and save your money. Then pay cash for what you want. Rac and all other rental companies rent junk. Try getting model #s then go to a real store and compare prices. 9 times out of 10 you can't because what rac has is not available to the public. They are cheap strip down models.

Just think of the tv you could have had for the 900 dollars you still owe and the 700 to fix, not to mention what you already paid. When I worked there we rented playstation 2 for 29.99 a week for 52 weeks. We could'nt keep them in the store. people were willing to pay 1559.48 for something that costs 299.99 just to have it now. rac as a rule wants 5 times what they pay for the stuff.

I seen somethings as high as ten times what they paid. And by the way for eveyone who thinks rac can't press charges for not returning rented items your wrong they can. But very seldom do they really do that because its a pain. And when you weigh want they pay for the junk compared the time, effort, and cost to press charges they would rather cut their losses and move on to the next victim.

former employees opinion

AUTHOR: Jeff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 07, 2006

All damages that are caused by normal wear and tear are covered under your liability waiver prtection. If it is something like you threw a hammer through the tv, then yeah you would have to pay for it, as that is not normal wear and tear.
The fact they said they issued a warrant is just plain laughable (they can't!! no matter what they say). Please everybody know now that with this company they will do anything to make sure that you pay, even when you shouldn't have to.
I would suggest calling a market manager or regional director as they just generally dont want to deal with complaints of any kind and will just have it fixed for you and tell the store to eat the loss.
If it is just normal wear and tear thats wrong with the tv yell at the store manager and tell him you pay for the "waiver" fee, then tell him its only gonna be $30 out of his monthly bonus to get it fixed and that legally he would be responsible for it to get fixed

my question is #1. what was the damage and what caused the damage,#2 if the damage was caused by malfunction of the tv itself for example:bad picture,no sound or no picture at all or if it was damage during delivery then and only then they have to send it to service and while thats happening they always have a replacement which is a loaner until your original tv is fixed which usaully takes a week.#3 if your tv was damaged due to negligance say for example someone caused the damage by throwing something at at the picture screen as one example then by agreement you our responsible for that mechandise. don't get me wrong but i hope everything works out for you but if you can locate your agreement take a look at it and read the clause about damage merchadise. make sure that theres proof that the damage is a tv malfunction other wise they will charge you for it.Good Luck

Sorry, didn't read carefully

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 21, 2006

Missed the part where you refuse to return the TV. Technically, yes that could fall under criminal theft statute, but I doubt that the Rochester police and prosecutors have the time or interest to start hauling in all of RACs many disgruntled customers.

Nevertheless, you should probably return the TV and THEN take them to small claims court.

ACTUALLY IN NEW YORK STATE, KEEPING RENTAL PROPERTY IS A CRIME.

AUTHOR: Sherri - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 20, 2006

This falls under theft/larceny and the statute specifically mentions that rental property is included. Whether they would actually prosecute criminally is one thing, but just know that THEY CAN should they choose to do so.

I do agree that the OP should cut her losses and return the TV. I also agree that she should take RAC to Small Claims Court to attempt to recover the repair bill and if she wins, take this money and go buy a TV outright.

Let us know what happens.

No warrant

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 20, 2006

Unless your local police have a very corrupt relationship with RAC, there is NO way they could have obtained a warrant for your arrest. This issue would have to be dealt with in civil, rather than criminal court, and even then only a judgment for FINANCIAL penalties could be rendered.

I say make them take you to court. I think any judge will be sympathetic to your case against a low-life company like RAC.

getting the tv fixed and sending rac the bill ..not a good idea

AUTHOR: Richard - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 19, 2006

in response to getting the tv fixed and sending rac the bill. its not a good idea.
the tv belongs to rac. they have a service department, you cant have the tv serviced with out permission of the owner. and they certainly wont pay the bill. now the policy for service through rac is to repair any item free of charge and provide a loaner if the item is damaged under normal wear and tear. but if damaged under circumstances beyond normal wear and tear you as the customer are responsible for paying rac service to fix. now what constitutes beyond normal wear and tear. that was not mentioned in this complaint

Try this

AUTHOR: Lori - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 30, 2005

Did RAC tell you why they wouldn't fix their TV. It is their's after all until it is paid for.

Send THEM a bill for the $700.00 you had to pay to have their TV fixed! If they don't pay it, take them to small claims court. Make sure you have your receipt for the cost of the repair and your contract. I bet you'll win that one.

Just a thought.

And find out if there really is a warrent out for you. More than likely there isn't one. If there is, provide them with your side of the story. If there isn't one, then call Rent-a-center and call their bluff. Good luck and keep us informed as to what happens.

Read Other Rent-a-Center Reports On This Site

AUTHOR: Buddy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 30, 2005

There are many Rent-a-Center complaints on this site with many good replies as to Rent-a-Center's threats. There is really no need to rent a t.v. from Rent-a-Center. You can buy a good one for less than $200, unless you want a 35 inch plasma flat screen. You can get a 25 inch color for a very good price for the money you are paying Rent-a-Center. If you don't have good credit, you can save up the money quickly for what you pay Rent-a-Center -- you just have to go without t.v. for a few months. You have sunk way too much money into a television set. Cut your losses and buy yourself a t.v.
