I received a moving estimate from Right On Time Moving, after loading the truck the price of the move nearly tripled. It went from an estimate of 1150 to 2800. When I complained about the 2.5 fold increase they said, "if you want we can unload the truck and bill you for our time and then you can choose a new mover"

In short I was overcharged by about 1000 dollars. My advice is to pick a different moving company.

It's unfortunate that this poor soul didn't know that you have a legal "open season" on average folks like him. I'm sure that YOU are well aware of this fact. And, I'd be willing to bet that you didn't happen to mention that to him while you were selling your company to him either, did you? Nah, why arm them with knowledge when they are ripe for the plucking.

The fact of the matter is that our Congress, being in bed with big business and not concerned in the least for our citizens except when it's election time, chose to let regulation of the moving industry basically fade away in 1995. Crooks in the business know very well how they can legally hold all your possessions for ransom for whatever they think you will pay.

Try getting a real copy of the weight of your goods some time and see if you succeed!!! I would say that he is just lucky he got all his stuff undamaged - some of the worst of the crooks will ransom everything damaged and when you think you are insured, you will find that it goes by the weight (not value) of your goods and that you will get a small fraction of their worth. Yes, Antoinette, I know this part of your game too. In fact, I doubt that there is anything that you crooked movers could pull that I don't already know about either from personal experience or extensive study of this industry.

I still say he got shafted if you didn't allow him to see the weight of his goods when it was being weighed.

And to you and every other consumer, I say ALWAYS get a BINDING ESTIMATE. If they won't do it, fine, there is competition out there (honest ones) who will, so run like hell to them. Once you have a binding estimate, pay for insurance for the VALUE and not the WEIGHT of your goods. Just doing these 2 things will eliminate most of the ways you can get screwed by a move. Finally, check on here and other sites on the internet and avoid the blacklisted sites. Ask your friends who they moved with and would recommend or not recommend.

Antoinette,

Seeing as you would like to educate this poor customer on the rules and regulations on the moving industry, I'm sure that your company advised the customer of the fact that even if it was a non bound estimate, that all she had to pay was 110% of the original estimate in order to receive delivery of her goods, and that she would be invoiced for the balance. And I'm sure you have certified weight tickets, right??

IN ALL DUE RESPECT YOU ARE WRONG UNLESS YOU OBTAINED A WRITTEN NOT TO EXCEED ESTIMATE THE COMPANY CAN CHARGE YOU AS TO THE WEIGHT OF YOUR SHIPMENT. SO THEREFORE YOU SHOULD BE AWARE AS TO THE RULES AND REGULATIONS THE MOVING INDUSTRY HAS TO FOLLOW. AND COMPANIES HAVE EVER RIGHT TO GIVE YOU THE OPTION TO CHOOSE ANOTHER MOVING COMPANY IF YOU ARE UNHAPPY AT THE BEGINNING OF A MOVE.
THANK YOU.
