Have you ever brought someone else's error to their attention in a respectful and professional manner and they show you rear end?  Well much to my surprise this is what happened when I brought a huge error on the part of Robins (a.k.a Ripoff) Federal Credit Union to their attention.

So I took out a loan with RFCU, and the loan was for 70 months.  Given the length of the loan in this economy you would think most financial institutions would be happy if someone could pay their loan the full term and spare them the inconvenience of having to repo the vehicle, but not Ripoff FCU they are quite ambitious.

As we all know when you finance a vehicle in order to protect the lieholder's interest you must carry comprehensive and collision coverage throughout the duration of the loan.  If you fail to do so the lienholder has the right to add Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI).  I know this first hand as I work for an insurance company, and actually worked in the department that specialized in providing lienholders with proof of insurance.  So on November 1, 2006 Ripoff FCU added $6466.00 on to my loan b/c they claim they never received proof I was protecting their insurance.  That's right people $6466.00!!!!  I found out about his nearly a year after they had added it.  I promptly provided them with proof of insurance and the agent advised me this was handled.  So all is well, right?????? WRONG!!!!!  Pay close attention, Ripoff FCU took off the $6646.00 that they added on December 1, 2007, but guess what they did not take off with that amount? (Keep reading)

So once I thought this issue was handled I continued to pay my loan and protect Ripoff FCU's property by carrying full coverage insurance.  Then on Feb 4, 2010 guess what occurred again?  That's right Ripoff FCU added $2816.00 to my loan.  As before I promptly provided them with proof of insurance to show that their interest was protected.

I found out about both of these issues  literally a week ago.  The reason I found out was because in two months I was suppose to pay off this loan in full, so I called them to find out what was the payoff amount and to my surprise I was told I owed Ripoff FCU a whopping $7k!!!!  (Can you imagine the look on my face?)  So I promptly asked for a print out of my loan statements and did some investigation.  Well guess what they conveniently left on my loan for 63 months and counting?  INTEREST!!!!!  That's right for 63 months from the original CPI ($6646) they have been charging me interest, but it gets better.  Remember the $2816?

Well they added that amount on top of the interest that had been accruing.  So to make sure we're on the same page.

- The interest that was added to my account from Nov 06 - Dec 07 when the amt of $6646 was added for CPI is still on my account and has been accruing ever since.

- The CPI added on Feb 4 2010 in the amount of $2816 and any interest along with it has been added to my account and accruing ever since.

- Realize that when the additional CPI was added in 2010 along with its interest, this was added on top of the interest that was already on the loan from the original CPI.

So one would think once the respective financial constitution responsible for this collosal error is made aware they would act promptly and more important fairly.  Well not this institution.  The Vice President, Mr. Dyal contacted me, and handed this issue to a Mr. Shane Reagan.  OMG!!!!!  He initially contacted me, and advised me he came up with the amount of $640 that they would refund my loan for ALL the interest they owed me. Really?

Once I promptly advised him he needs to check his math, and broke everything down for him he advised me he would call me back with his revision.  He advised me that he recieved my proof of insurance and would refund the $2816 in full for the 2nd unjust CPI added and the most he was willing to refund me was $800 in interest?  Really?  The key word that stood out to me was "willing"?  As if they were doing me a favor?  So his explanation was, we dont have to refund you anything, b/c it is the duty of the consumer to bring any error to our attention within 90 days.  In good faith we're just offering you this amount?  So let me understand this, for the thousands of dollars in interest that was added to my account unjustly, youre only offering me $800 and expect me to eat the rest? Despite having insurance the entire duration of the loan and paying the loan payments as agreed, and you (RFCU) acknowledging the error, I'm suppose to take $800 and pay an additional $5-7k?

So obviously I advised him to keep the $800 and send me their decision in writing and I'll take legal action.  It says a lot about a bank or in this case a federal credit union when in this economy, a consumer fulfills their obligations, and the bank responds like this.  You can't imagine the frustration my wife and I feel.  To know that the VP of this RFCU had his hand in this decision, to know that Mr. Reagan, a manager, made this decision?  These are the decision makers, and this is how they chose to handle this matter.  I dont know how this will turn out, but I promise you I will try my best to make sure that this doesnt happen to anyone else out there.  My parents, siblings, and friends currently have accounts with RFCU, and that scares me.  Pray for me, and if you've experienced anything like this, please offer any kind words or advice.
