I am writing a fraud report against Roman Malakov located in the NYC diamond district. What happened to him appears like a systematic diamond fraud that involves using an unreliable diamond certificate such as EGL international certificate. When I spoke with a lawyer whose expertise lies in handling overgraded diamond lawsuits, my understanding of this issue became clearer; EGL international is like a ghost company because they were forced to close their business due to the controversy over their reliability and it is now illegal to use it. When it is used, it is used to overcharge unsuspecting customers. That is the nature of our case.

My then fiancé initially purchased my engagement ring for around $6,000 at Roman Malakov in March last year. They refused to return the ring, even though it wasn’t custom made and I have never worn it. It was because this initial purchase my husband ended up being played by their tricks. According to my husband, they kept forcing him to go for something bigger and more expensive ring than what my husband and I had discussed. They told him only over a carat is available and my husband reluctantly paid slightly over double for my second engagement ring.  He said he knew something was not right.

He came back to work after picking up the new ring and had a closer look at the certificate. He said a gut feeling, which made him to look for the company (EGL International) and he told me that was the time he realized he was scammed. My husband then did another appraisal by EGL USA and the results came out quite different from the EGL I certificate. Here are the notable specifics: Roman Malakov’s EGL I certificate represents D color grade and SI1 clarity, while EGL USA shows F-G color grade and SI3 clarity. That is roughly about 3 steps upgrade on color and 2 steps upgrade on clarity. What this means is that my husband could have paid around $4,000 or even $5,000 more than what my engagement ring actually is worth.
