I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a Brand Ambassador position they supposedly paid $35/hour in the middle of November.  I was instructed to send in pictures and a resume which I did. I received an email back from someone claiming to be President of Rebel Marketing Inc. by the name of Ryan Davalos. The email came from  rebelmarketinginc@outlook.com. He expressed that he was impressed with my resume and wanted me to start in early December working with a program for Miller-Coors. He asked me to send in I-9, W-9 and bank information for direct deposit. I did so. From that he responded asking me what days I could train. I responded with a day and waited to hear back. After 3 days of hearing nothing I emailed again and have never heard from this guys since. What I have gotten are a bunch of debit cards in the mail that I didn't order. I'm glad that I gave him my reloadable debit card info instead of my main bank. Either way, this was a scheme to get my info and I fell for it. Don't make the same mistake that I did.

Red Flags

AUTHOR: Giselle - (United Kingdom)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 14, 2016

There were many red flags this was not legit.  First off, it was advertised on Craigslist.  That is always a clue that you should proceed with caution.

The advertised pay was $35/hourly.  If you do a little research, you will find that most people with the job title of "brand ambassador" earn about $10-$12 an hour.  The unrealistic pay should have been a tip off as soon as you read the job ad.

The company emailed you with an outlook (free) email address.  Why wasn't the email from XXXXX@rebelmarketinginc.com?  Rebel Marketing may well be a legit company and know nothing about this attempted scam.  I would locate the REAL Rebel Marketing and contact them and see if they are aware of the CL ad. Scammers often use real company names to try to appear more legit to potential victims.

Another red flag:  you were offered a job without ever interviewing face to face.  That just doesn't happen in the real world, especially with a "brand ambassador" type position.  Of course the employer is going to want to see you before making any job offer. Also, they asked for your banking information without having you met you.

Future-going:  be careful with Craigslist job postings.  If the pay is absurdly high, i.e. $30 for a receptionist job, $50 for an admin job, etc, it's going to be a scam. Always.  Be careful of a company that says you are hired when you haven't even met them face to face.  Becareful of a company that uses a free service to email you, i.e. yahoo, gmail, outlook, hotmail, etc. Be careful of giving out any banking and other personal information like SSN, drivers license #, etc.
