I called and talked to the guy who owns the franchise and told him i needed a truck to move some furniture to jacksonville for my daughter who is going to college.

He was helpfull and told me he could get me a 12' truck for the 3 days (fri, sat, sun) for 246.00. I thought that was fair and made my reservation about 1 week in advance.

On thurs afternoon i called and asked if maybe i could get the truck that evening as i would have a friend available to help me get it loaded and he told me that would be no problem and would call me if there was a truck available. i recv a called at 5:15pm on thurs eve and was told i could pick up the truck, which i did, and signed all the necessary paperwork
about 5:45pm on thurs.

Everything went as planned and i returned the truck about 5:30pm on sunday evening and called the dealer on monday around noon to verify my bill and was shocked when told it was 333.00.

When i asked to what happened to the 246.00 i was quoted i was told that i kept the truck for an extra day thus the charge. I asked for an explanation and was told that's what i signed for on the agreement and i said that's not what was discussed and he said, well that's what i signed for.

They had counted my pickup on thurs as a full day and i told him i had asked if i could get it early to get it loaded and he said no problem but he never told me i would be charged for the 15 minutes between when they closed at 6:00 pm to when i would have picked it up on fri. at 8:00am.

Renter beware because he couldn't have given a damm as to what he had told me because all he kept saying was that's what i had signed for.
Ryder truck rentals lost a customer today and anyone else that i can persuade.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

The computer caused the problem

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, March 29, 2003

The computer program Ryder (now Budget) uses allows the rental agent to specify either a 24-hour rental period or a "standard rental day," meaning that a new day will be charged at 8:00 AM each day.

It appears that the rental agent in this case used the standard rental day. The first "day" was from Thursday evening until 8:00 AM Friday.

The agent probably did not intend to do that, but the agent's software defaults to the standard rental day instead of the 24-hour day. If the agent understands how to use the software he can override the default and specify a 24-hour day, but it requires an effort on his part.

I used to be a computer programmer and now rent Budget trucks. The software, now called "BART", is a royal piece of crap from the stone age and riddled with known bugs and flaws. When I first started using BART it took about a month to discover how to override the standard rental day.

When renting anything it is always wise to ask what you will be charged for before signing on the dotted line.

BTW, the agent could have modified the rental agreement when you returned the truck to specify the 24-hour day.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

never something for nothing

AUTHOR: howard - ()

POSTED: Friday, June 07, 2002

it continues to amaze me how many people expect to be given "something for nothing" without asking specifically for it. had i (and i have) picked up the truck early, i would have been straight-forward and asked up front if there were any extra charges. i would then have negotiated in good faith for either a reduction of those charges or asked for a special no charge... there is no such thing as "something for nothing", but open negotiations can and do create less expensive contracts.
