I instated an insurance policy today at 1:06pm. Then found out that Geico was $50 cheaper per month. I called SafeAuto back to cancel around 2:30pm. I explained to the CSR that I wanted to cancel my policy and asked what I needed to do to accomplish this. She said that I had 3 hours to cancel without charge. I said that that's what I wanted to do. Then she said that it would have to be sent to the underwriting department for cancellation since proof of insurance had been faxed.

This was all fine with me. I understand that they have procedures that they have to follow. What I didn't like was that every time I tried to confirm that the $155.48 would not come out of my checking account she wouldn't say yes or no. She just kept saying that I was wasting my 3 hours because I had to get off the phone with her for her to send the cancellation request to the underwriting department.

I told her that I also wanted to make sure that my 3 hour clock had stopped when I stopped talking to her and she said that it would when it went to underwriting. I tried to ask if it would stop when it went to them or when they actually did something about it.

She put me on hold and after a few minutes came back to let me know that her team leader was looking at my account and asked why I wanted to cancel my policy with SafeAuto. I told her the truth and she put me on hold again.

A few minutes later she came back and said that I had 2 options for cancellation. I could let the policy expire and then use that "information" (I don't know what info she was referring to)to transfer to Geico or I could go on and cancel now and only be charged $25. I asked what the $25 was for and she said that it was the cancellation fee and that I should call back tomorrow to check on the status of my cancellation. I asked if she had a confirmation number or something. She said no because underwriting was handling the cancellation.

Once again I tried to confirm using actual dollar amounts. I told her that I wanted to be sure I understood. I asked if I was correct in saying that $25 would be taken from my checking account and that the $130.48 would stay in my checking account. She said that it would. I wasn't satisfied but I was frustrated enough to let it go and hung up.

The more I thought about it the less I liked it so I called back to clarify everything. The lady that I spoke with said that my claim was instated at 1:06pm and that my 3 hour clock had stopped at 2:54pm (that's when the first csr sent the request to underwriting). I told her that I'd checked my bank account online and that the $155.48 had already been taken out and was pending. I asked her if the $130.48 would come out or not.

She said that underwriting might not get to my request for cancellation for a few days but that my money would be refunded. I asked her how long that would take and she said 7 to 10 business days. I asked her if she realized that I wouldn't be able to purchase the insurance with Geico until I got the money back from them. She just apologized for the inconvenience. I hung up.

I thought about it some more and decided that the whole mess was bullshit and called them back. I spoke with a team leader and she said that underwriting would probably get to it in the morning and that if my money came out of my account that it would be back in there tomorrow. She also said that it was underwriting's decision as to wether I had to pay the $25 fee but I couldn't talk to them since there was no way for her to transfer a call to underwriting. She said that she didn't think that I would have to pay it.

So we'll see tomorrow what will happen to my $155.48.

I would recommend to anyone needing insurance to look elsewhere. There's too much crap to get through to get answers from these people and you're never given ALL of the information up front. I'd hate to actually have to file a claim with them.
