Mr. Salem has a radio show on Saturday mornings. He's an affable gentleman who seems to be knowledgeable about auto repair so I thought about taking my car into his shop because I was having a knocking in my transmission when I would shift gears.

I wanted to check his company out first so I went to yelp.com. He had quite a few favorable reviews so I thought this spoke well of his company. However, at the bottom of the reviews page I found an link to "reviews that are currently not recommended". I read yelp.com's reasons as why they weren't recommended. Many were because they were one-time reviews to yelp.com. Yelp.com only features reviews from people who have multiple yelp.com reviews.

So I started reading the "reviews that are currently not recommended". There were dozens. These seemed to be legitimate people who had a one-time experience with this repair shop that were treated unfairly. I wondered if this were true of other businesses but this business has many more than any other business I scanned on yelp.com.

It's obvious the owner is doing damage control by trying to explain away why they gave poor service. I'll let the reader of this review be the final judge by reading the responses but I will stay far away from this business by the sheer multitude of complaints.

So I read reviews of this business on other review web sites and I see much of the same. People saying they were treated unfairly including the owner getting confused at situations and calling people liars when there was no evidence of them lying.

Again I leave it up to the reader of this review to read the reviews of this business. You will find many unhappy customers. It will be up to you to decide if this many people can be unhappy with a service and have it all be their fault.

More damage control being done by the owner of Salem Boys Auto

AUTHOR: Daniel - (United States)

POSTED: Saturday, December 16, 2017

I would invite anyone not to take my word for anything I write about this business nor would I expect anyone to take the owner's words for anything. I would simply ask that you look at all the Yelp.com reviews including the ones under "reviews that are currently not recommended" and decide for yourself how many people are dissatisfied with this company. You will then see that the owner's explanation here in his reply of "not publicly asking his customers to review his shop on Yelp.com" has nothing to do with their dissatisfaction.

When the owner makes things up like my "review smells like a shop owner trying to get even" you can see he is clearly doing damage control as he provides no credible evidence. That would be like me accusing some of his satisfied reviews as "smelling of some insider". There is no evidence to support that either.

If you look at the Yelp reviews you will see Salem Boys Auto has successfully repaired many vehicles and has many satisfied customers. I'm not disputing that. However, I don't have to be a customer, nor do you, to see how many dissatisfied customers there are and how the owner twists their situations around like he has attempted to do here. Just look at all the reviews, that's all. Any business owner with mostly good reviews would welcome that instead of making irrelevant excuses for their dissatisfaction.

I wish you and your business well Mr. Salem. I hope you continue to provide a good service to the people who visit your shop.

#2 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Is it fair to follow the advice of someone who admits to never stepping foot in our repair shop?

AUTHOR: Mark - (United States)

POSTED: Thursday, December 14, 2017

My name is Mark Salem, I own Salem Boys Auto. It is rather strange that Daniel has never hired us to fix his car, yet he can trash us based on what he read. Please google "Salem Boys Auto reviews” and read about us for yourself before you decide to follow the advice of Daniel who admits to never stepping foot in our repair shop.

The #1 question I get on our local radio show is, “can you recommend a good repair shop near where I live or work?” So in 1988, I started a list called the “Best Car Repair Shops” in Phoenix. This is written on our website, “If you have a problem with one of my "Best Shops" AND the BBB agrees with your version of the issue AND the shop refuses to abide by the BBB decision, I will personally carry out the directives of the BBB including repairing your car and/or issuing a refund up to $5,000 (My exposure is limited to $5,000.00).

I have never had to pay for any repair or make a refund on behalf of a shop because they participated in the investigation of the complaint and fixed the problem, so I didn't have to. I recently removed three shops. One lied about the list price of a part, one lied about the date he purchased his new shop (we require 5 yrs experiance before we will process your request to be placed on our list) and one did shoddy body work when he says he is a mechanical shop.

This review smells like this may be one of those shop owners trying to get even. Last, the reason we have so many Yelp comments under the "reviews that are currently not recommended", is easy to explain. I was not aware that I could NOT ask my Customers on the radio to comment about us to Yelp. So when they were flooded with reviews, they spanked me and told me to stop and so I no longer publically ask my Customers to review us.

Daniel I've always heard good things about Mark Salem

I don't understand your complaint that you've posted here doesn't sound like you've done business with him I've heard nothing but good about the guy and his family trying to do the right thing and be different about helping people with their automotive issues.

What's the sense of  writing a review about a business if you haven't even done any business with the guy.   I can see somebody writing a review about a business that they've had problems with there were so many people out there that want to write something negative about somebody when they haven't even done business with them.
