About a year ago, I went with my mother to Saturn of Albuquerque to assist her in purchasing a vehicle. As I have ahd a Saturn Ion for about three years, and never had a problem, I recomended it. She purchased a 2006 model Ion that same day.

No more than three months later, the check engine light appears on the dash. Thinking it was something minor, she had the dealership inspect the vehicle. Upon inspection, the service department told her the light was on because she had a faulty gas cap. Relieved, she left with her brand new gas cap and no check engine light.

Three more weeks later, her check engine light appears again. As to not feel like she was nit-picking, she took the cap off and put it back on time after time without results. She makes another appointment, this time the problem being a pine needle in the gas fill compartment. Saturn reset the system, and light went off.

Another month passes, and yup, light's on again. You can imagine the frustration at this point! The dealership then tells her the same compartment had more debris in it and that she was silly to keep bringing it in. They said the check engine light would not hurt anything, that the car was okay. The service manager said when Saturn sent a comment card, to give them the best ratings possible, as it went to corporate. We never recieved that card.

Saturn, we believe, has no idea what is wrong with this vechile, but now it is sputtering and almost wants to die while sitting at a light. The service departmnet still claims the car is ok and they reset the light when taken to the shop. This is such a hassle for my mother, and she feels no more confidence in this car than the one she traded in for it. This headache just costed $18,000. They REFUSE to help her, or give her any satisfaction.

The service department is absolutely rude. Though I've had no problems what so ever with my Ion, we are both trading our cars in and will NEVER buy a Saturn again. Anyone who is thinking about buying one should heed my warning of Albuquerque's service center.

Saturn Needs to be Sued

AUTHOR: Selene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 07, 2007

I have had problems with my Saturn for years. Everytime my engine light went on it meant an internal cylinder head replacement. This was covered 2 out of 3 times it died as I bought an extended warranty. The first time my car died it only had 22K miles on it that "fix" lasted 13K miles and it died again.

Where I made a mistake was that I should have pursued an immediate Lemon Law Action against Saturn rather than being persuaded by Saturn that this was no big deal and it will be fixed for good this time.

The second "fix" lasted 20K miles and cost me 2K to repair. I took them to court and won.

Do yourself a favor while this vehicle is still new enough to get your entire purchase price back. File a Lemon Law action in your state.

Saturn is the worse crap car I ever owned, the worse manufacturer I ever dealt with.

Get rid of this bomb file a Lemon Law Action.

Are you trying to teach Saturn a lesson?

AUTHOR: Shawangunk - (U.S.A.)

Are you trying to teach Saturn a lesson by trading in YOUR car, which you admit to enjoying so much that you recommended your mother to buy one just like it? I highly doubt Saturn will be hurt because you traded in your prized possession. The only one who will be adversely affected is YOU.

As for your mother's situation, simply take the car to another Saturn dealer where the quality of service may be better; alternatively take it to any GM dealer as they service Saturns as well. Or, shell out a few bucks and have it looked at by a private mechanic.

Your mother paid $18,000 for the car --- is it really worth all the thousands of dollars of depreciation to trade it in over what is probably only a $2 part that needs replacement?

I understand your frustation

but first I would suggest taking your vehicle somewhere else for diagnosis. Find out what is really wrong with the vehicle.
Once you know, then talk to the dealership again. If they refuse to do anything about it or reimburse you for the diagnosis fee when they should have done it themselves the first time, then make a formal complaint to Saturn.

Since I don't have anymore information I can't say what steps to take after that, but I think first you need to find out what is really going on with the vehicle. It's true that a check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong with your engine, it's usually just a sensor or something minor. Either way the dealership should never tell you to just ignore it.

So again, I would suggest taking it to another shop. You could try another Saturn dealership, they may also be able to help you sort out the problems you have had with the other dealership. Or try an independent repair shop. Not a quicky lube or any other chain store. Just take it to a regular independent mechanic, preferably one that specializes in check engine lights and diagnosis. You want to actaully pay for this service, a free diagnosis is not going to give you the information you need so don't bother with autozone or any other place that offers to do it for free. Anyone who is good at diagnosing problems like this will absolutely charge for it. You should also get a full report of what they did and what problem(s) they found. You need this when you talk with Saturn again.

Don't just dump the car, really it could be a minor repair. Even new cars will occasionally have a faulty part.
