Watch out for SBC telephone company!

On my new SBC bill, I realized that SBC had changed my long distance plan. I formerly had a $10/month 500 minute plan, and now I had a 10 cent a minute plan. Of course they were closed over the weekend so I called them today.

I was told by the first person I spoke to that yes, they did indeed change my plan, and she could find no reason why. She credited my account the relatively small amount I had been overcharged thus far, then transferred me to the Long Distance department.

Where I was informed that I lost my plan because I moved. Yes, that's right. I did not change any services. I did not add or remove any features. I only moved my physical address, and had them transfer my existing service to the new address.

The woman on the phone said that any changes to my service could result in my losing my plan, which apparently had been discontinued - we were only "allowed" to continue to have it because we had been grandfathered in. At no time was I informed that:

1) the plan I was on had been discontinued
2) we were grandfathered
3) if I so much as MOVED, I would lose the plan
4) I was losing the plan (when I called to change service)

I don't know what SBC cares to call it because they refuse to answer my questions, but in my book this is Slamming - they may not have switched carriers on me, but they switched plans without my knowledge or consent and are now charging me more money!

The not-too-pleasant woman on the phone would not answer many of my questions, but when asked "So what would happen if, say, there was a flood? Or a fire? Or, here in Southern California, an earthquake, God forbid? Are you saying if my home is destroyed and I have to move because of it, I lose my calling plan?", she answered "Yes, if you transfer service, you would lose your calling plan."

Please, if anyone else has had problems like this with SBC, or any other phone company, please let me know how you dealt with it! At this point I am waiting to hear from a Supervisor (of course they are all in "meetings" and cannot answer the phone) but I will be updating this when I hear more!

TOO MANY CHOICES AVAILABLE NOW.

AUTHOR: Sherri - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 29, 2005

I do not use SBC. I get marketing materials from them constantly, which go straight to the shredder. I switched to Vonage several months ago, my service is better than with "traditional" companies, I have unlimited calling in the US and Canada and super-cheap international long distance. This, along with my home fax line runs me $39.05 a month. No packages of calling features to choose from...already there. If the cable goes out, calls automatically forward to my cell phone.

Unfortunately, some of the lan line "other choices" are really no choice at all..one company worse than SBC was MCI's local "service"...I could write a book about them.

Typical SBC.....

You will NOT get any satisfaction from SBC regarding this. This is standard policy for them. They do this for all their services. I have had similar issues with them over ADSL service. All I did was move and suddenly the whole reality of thier billing changes. If you try to get out, you get slammed for early termination. A friend of mine even went along with their "plans" and tried to upgrade his ADSL service after moving. Not only were they now charging him more for the same service, they slammed him with an early termination of the FIRST plan he had. The only way to deal with this thanks to the current "corporations are exempt from being ethical" atmosphere in this country (thanks Bush!), is to simply ditch SBC when you get the chance.

As of now, I have cancelled my phone service from them. It is my only recourse at this point. Come March, I will be at the end of my 1 year term (slavery) to SBC on my ADSL line. I will be dumping them for another provider as well.

If the company sucks.....leave them. Plain and simple.

SBC has been very aggressive with their telemarketing as well since I dropped them as my local phone carrier. Each time I get one of thier people on the phone, I read them the riot act and give all the horrors they have put me through over the past year. One actually had the nerve to say "well if you goto another company, you will still be using SBC equipment, and if something goes wrong, you will still get an SBC tech comming out". My response to that was "either way, I will NEVER have to deal with your bills, your customer service and your screw-ups ever again. Thats what I will be paying another company to do, and ethical one!".

Ditch them! They are big, bloated, over-bearing, and impossible to deal with on any level. Now with the purchase of AT&T it will only get worse. Once again you can thank the current administration in the White House on all this de-regulation. Its allowing the specter of MaBell to return. We consumers will be out in the cold.

(its no surprise that SBC is based out of Texas. Home of Bush......Home of Enron....etc.)
