Do not buy the Sears Protection Plans for appliances. Sears views these as just additional profit. For example, warranty prices for a refrigerator range from $279-$549. And the service response can take a week or more. Sears can and will fire employees for not selling enough of these. During the time I worked at Sears I saw this happen to a number of co-workers.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Sears MPAs indeed a waste of money

AUTHOR: IntheKnow - (USA)

A typical Sears MPA is approx 33% of the price of the product.  There is no rationale, no consumer data, no report by an independent actuary or consumer advocate that would consider these plans a good value.   What is the basis for offering a plan on years 2-4?  There is NONE other than a minimal risk to Sears and a way for Sears (and plenty of others) no make a ton of money off of the American consumer.  Years 1-5 of an appliance life cycle is its BEST years. the life expectancy on most appliances is still in the 8 -19 year range.   While there are some claims, the number of service plan purchases that do not experience any failure in years 2-4 are much, much greater.

Sears would NEVER disclose it's claim utilization (plans sold vs claims paid) and claims experience.

Any objection answer by a Sears salesperson or other Sears service rep is utter nonsense.  Yearly maintenance is a joke.  Give me a serious break.  No one needs someone to check their thermostat in years 1-5, etc.

Twenty years ago salespeople were selling years 2-4 to gullible consumers.  They same applies today.  Twenty years ago the salespeople were saying, "they are not built like they used to be,"  still using that line of nonsense today.

You are in a Sales Position, so yes if you can't sell what your employeer wants they are going to fire you.  That is no RipOff, just the way business works.  Also, you really think that it is that "earth shattering" that warranties are profit centers for stores?

Why do you think you are asked if you want to "upsize" your fast food meal.

Why do you think you are asked if you want an extra pair of shoe laces when you buy a pair of shoes?

Why do you think you are asked if you want to apply for a credit card when you are in a store making a purchase?

The answer is the same, because all of these makes the store more money.

The way it is.

AUTHOR: Justthefacts - (U.S.A.)

Was not fired. And a two year MPA is only available for microwaves. All other appliances including the laundry area where I worked, MPA's were only 3 and 5 year terms. And you don't touch anything else that I said. Employees were fired for not selling enough MPA's, forced to go to early AM Saturday " training sessions" and otherwise harassed The cost is high because as several managers stated to me and as noted in all training is that Sears views them as a major contribution to thier pfofit margin for major appliances. As for the serice times, I have fielded many calls from customers complaining about the long wait to get a "service tech" to their home to fix something.

#4 UPDATE Employee

A lot of incorrect info in your statement about Sears

AUTHOR: Eleanor - (United States of America)

I work for Sears doing tech support for applainces and lawn and garden equipment.  The only correct statement you made about the Protection Agreements is that it could take a week or more to get service.  Let me respond by saying that at times, we also have same day service, next day service...etc...

You were incorrect about the prices of the PA's (Protection Agreements) as I've seen them for cheaper than that considering for how long you purchase it for.  For example, a five year agreement will be more expensive than a two year agreement but I just thought that was common sense.  I will say that I encourage people to purchase these since having to pay for service when it is no longer under warranty in the long run ends up costing you more money.

This Report appears to be a bitter statement because you were fired.  (But hey, that's just my opinion)
