Salt Lake City, Utah 03/19/2008: Applicants be warned, Securitas Security Services, USA is hands down the worst company you can work for.

Pay:
When it comes to your pay checks there is always good news and bad news. The good news is you are forced to work more overtime then regular hours, so your pay checks are not bad as far as Utah standards go. The bad news is any sign on bonus, scheduled pay increase, or other benefits take an act of congress to get.
As far as raises go you get about a 50 cent raise at six months, one year, and two years.(If you are desperate enough to stick around that long) After two years you are toped out at just under $10.00 an hour. If you have a family your insurance premium is half your check. Even the site supervisors and field supervisors make less then a Dennys waitress.

Respect (or lack there of):

You won't find a company out there that will respect you less. Every field supervisor will try to sneak up on you to see if you're sleeping. Entry level guards are fired on the spot for dozing off after there relief pulled a no call no show and they are forced to work a 16:00-08:00. Supervisors on the other hand, four sexual harassment charges and leaving a service weapon in a hospital bathroom will only get you transferred to a different site. Talk about double standards.
Human (LACK OF) Recourses are best left alone. If you go to Stephanie or Scott with a legitimate issue they will drop the ball every time. They also have a personal vendetta with every employee. The branch manager (Steve) is the most incompetent person in the world. If there is a more counter-productive way of doing things he will find it.

Benefits:
Over priced and under covered.

Job Security:
If you keep your mouth shut you can keep a piss poor job for as long as you like. If you think for yourself and assert your opinion you will be fired for hurting someones ego. They are looking for fresh blood all year long because they are constantly running a skeleton crew and the average guard sticks around for less then six months.

Work/Life Balance:

You either work for Securitas or you have a life. There is no balance.

Career Potential/Growth:

The only way to grow in your career and work for Securitas is if you work your way through school on the swing shift.

Location:

If it isn't in BFE it's in a bad neighborhood.

Co-worker Competence:

Thank God I worked by my self. I would rather slam my head in a car door then spent more then ten minuets with another Securitas employee. Some co-workers (Robert Handy) would treat a paper cut as if it were DEFCON 1. Some supervisors (Julie Weese) would call in drunk or come in to work drunk every day.

Work Environment:

The equipment never functioned properly. No air conditioning in the summer. No heater in the winter. Hostile work environment.

Portland, OR 01/02/2008: Pay - Varies by posting, can be good (I'm $12 hour), but haven't had a raise in 3 years. Others longer
Respect - Only if you kiss a*s and don't make your opinions known. If you do above and beyond, nothing happens, except getting more work and no promotions Actual quote, "there is no such thing as officer descretion"
Benefits - they exist, but again vary by acount
Job Security - Fubar enough, you are might be gone, you might not, depends on how much they like/hate you and how much staffing they have/don't have.
Work/Life Balance - Actual quotes, "you will come to work, whenever we call, child care is not our issue, traffic is not our issue, beings sick is not our issue"
Career potential/growth, constantly going through supervisors, hiring ones who can't do the job, not promoting those who are acting as the supervisor
Location - varies
Co-worker competence - varies, some really competentant, some not. Most lucky enough to be able to breath
Work environment - hell on earth

Burbank, Ca 12/10/2007: As a Union Rep for Securitas here in California to be exact Burbank. I have seen lack of breaks, so many Cal osha regulation broken. Lack of respect for the officer's. The supervisor lack training skills which has led to a lot of injuries of the Officers. For promotion a person has to kiss but. For female to get promoted here at the sight I worked at there was barly fair and equal opporunity for the female guards. So many law suit have been filled agaist securitas. The company should be in forbes magazine as the worst company to work for.

Los Angeles,Californ 12/08/2007: Pay-Each worksite varies!, but, your paycheck is consistently wrong! Respect-The only thing securitas respects is another dollar!lol. They treat their employees like pennies on the ground! They're rude, disrespectful, and they don't care about your wellbeing, concerns, preferences, or problems that you may have! Benefits-You're told that you have benefits!,but, since you're an hourly contracted employee, you never know when your contract may be terminated!,and they won't have any other contract to send you to!,therefore, you won't be around to use any benefits at all! Any benefits are geared toward the permanent, salaried office staff!

Job Security-You "MUST" be joking! Head coaches on losing sports teams have lots more job security than you do! Work/Life Balance-Securitas want your full committment when it comes to their job! They want for you to be available to work anytime, and anyplace! They have little, if any regard for your life outside of work! Career Potential/Growth-If you come as a guard, you'll probably leave as a guard!

It is virtually impossible to prove that you do such a good job above and beyond all of the other officers thus granting you promotions! With securitas, even if you're promoted into an entry leveled managerial position, you're usually just a "Fall Guy" for everyone to blame, and chew out whenever things don't go right! Securitas seems to love military veterans, and retired law enforcement personnel as the resumes of those in most middle/upper managerial positions contain these qualities! Location-Most of securitas's sites are accessible by private car, or public transportation! Co-worker Competence-Securitas seems willing to hire anyone that has,or can qualify for a california state guard card! If you're abled to come into the office, fill out an application, come to the half-baked interview that they give, and, as aforementioned, qualify, or posess a guard card, then 11 times out of 10 you'll be hired!

Securitas's training classes are a joke!, and it definitely shows in the marginal competence,or total ineptitude of it's employees! Work Environment-Basically, the work environments are safe, clean, orderly, and productive!

Pittsburgh, PA 11/20/2007: Pay: IF you can get the money that you earn (especially O/T)the pay can be decent. There are many of us who have worked 120 hours and mysteriously only received pay for 80. When we call the office we're given the run around and excuses. Some of us weren't even given pay for our regular wages. (I'm still waiting for my check from last week in fact)

There are a lot of sites that are only paying min.wage and those are the ones that are rarely staffed adequately and you'll end up working 12 hour shifts (or 16 if someone calls off)to cover 24hrs. The premium sites get relief guards because they don't want to pay the major overtime.

Respect and Job Security: You are replacable. You will never be treated like you are an asset to the company.

Career Potential: It's not worth being anything other than a guard. Adding a "title" to your position does not guarantee that you will receive any more pay or respect.

Co-Worker Competence: I'll have to admit that I'm disappointed in the choice of employees. Despite the opinion of another person on this site, security IS a real job and not all of us are pot smoking morons. It is a much needed service for many companies and those companies deserve to recieve the best employees for their money. However, it seems to be the "norm" for big contract companies like Securitas to hire morons. I would have to assume that this is because those are the people who are most easily stepped on and manipulated. (ripped off). Those who are intelligent and knowledgable in the law will only last in this company as long as they keep their mouth shut.

Work Environment: The premium jobs are the safest to work at but hard to get. More than likely you'll be working crap jobs for minimum wage in dangerous areas or sites where you'll be exposed to all of the extreme elements of weather, chemical and physical hazards etc.

Benefits: They have some benefits to offer, but only if you work full time. Good luck getting that. They're worse than Wal-Mart in that respect.

Altoona, PA 11/12/2007: I worked for this company a few years ago for 10 months. Everything gets pretty much a neutral rating because the company is pretty much unremarkable either way. The pay sucked; it was barely enough to support myself. I got a decent amount of respect from middle management only because I was one of the few competent people they had working for them. My site supervisor (guard captain) was pretty cool; he knew how much the company sucked. The turnover was pretty bad and most of the people that came in were pretty stupid. But security is a good job for stupid people.

There is some potential for advancement but advancement in the area I worked that meant making about $10 an hour, driving 100's of miles a week, and dealing with all the retards they have working for them. Needless to say I stayed a guard. I gave the benefits a 5 but I'm not talking about health insurance, I'm talking "fringe benefits". One of the other reviews mentioned "felons, drug addicts, and high school dropouts." Well, all I'll say about that is there's few jobs where you can be stoned your entire shift and get away with it; that's why I liked walking rounds ;-) Location for me was great; the site was only 10 minutes away from my house. Most of my coworkers were pretty dumb except for a few I hung out with on rounds. The work environment was pretty dangerous because the site was a steel mill.

One of my duties was to take injured mill workers to the hospital if they didn't need an ambulance. Other than that I really don't have anything else to say about the company. I had fun while I worked there but if they knew what I was getting away with they should have fired me.

Minnesota 10/17/2007: It had been a real learning experience having worked for this company. Securitas bills its self as one of the largest private security firms in the nation, however they cannot offer a benefits package plan that is reasonable for its employees. For instance family medical coverage would cost over half of your monthly income. It seemed to me that Securitas was only interested in $$$$ and not in the development of professional security officers.

Turn over rates are outrageous (you never knew who you would be working with) but this practice builds the bottom line for the company allowing them not to pay benefits or vacation hours to their employees. While employed there I had heard stories about the company ordering officers to lie to the clients, as well as officers failing in their duties on a regular basis. The HR department and hiring processes were a joke as well as their new officer training program. In my opinion Felons, Drug Addicts, and High School Dropouts, all need the opportunity for employment; I just never thought Securitas was where I would find them. Apply at your own risk!!!!

#8 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Sorry to tell you this

AUTHOR: Didn't U Know? - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Private security companies are the WORST to work for ever. I have been in security 10 years; in just the time I was employed with Securitas (2004-2005), I was threatened on a daily basis that I was about to be fired, assaulted by a supervisor, placed in jeopardy by my ex-husband whom they hired and placed near me after being told he was a danger to me, and verbally abused regularly on the job. Please know that I was not a sole target of this, they treated everyone this way to one extent or another, but the more unlikely the employee is to get another job right away, the worse you are treated.

On top of this, they managed to get about 30 minutes of work per day out of everyone for free by demanding that you come in early enough to get to your work station to walk a long distance from your vehicle (parked on client company property) to the security office and then to your post. This took 15-20 minutes both at the beginning and end of shift - all off the clock.

I personally witnessed supervisors harassing other employees as well - sending supervisors to employees homes to force them to come to work on their off time. I witnessed a senior supervisor force a man to shave his head for the job, and yank several employees long-planned vacation time the day before their vacations started - several times people had trips planned and paid for and just lost their money. There are other incidents too many to list.

The day I started work with Securitas, I was told:
1. No vacation time for me EVER
2. No days off ever for any reason

They remained true to those rules. I asked for one day off one time after I had been there just over one year and was cursed at, yelled at, and called "stupid" for not following the no day off rule. OK I could go on for pages about Securitas. I will add that all the time I worked there, I received excellent employee reviews, and never missed a day of work or was late.

One company I was let go from because I got a divorce and my Sgt didn't like it (he said so).
Another company I let go because I had accidentally fallen on the ice and broken my leg off the job, It was a sit down position monitoring cameras but they said it made them look bad. They said to come back when I was well, but callously left me with not only no job to return to, but no insurance to continue medical care for a severe injury. Although I had only been there 7 months and was not FMLA eligible, they could have left me on their books as active so I could at least continue insurance (they do it for their buddies LOL).

After I got married while working for another company, the general manager told everyone he was going to "get rid of me if it was the last thing he did" because I married another employee of the company. This was not against company policy, BUT ....... sigh.

All this and the fact that you will be many times treated very badly by many client company you are posted to. This is because companies do not like having to have security in the first place but they must have it, and you are the lowest of the low because you don't make them any money; and because the employees themselves greatly dislike security.

SO................ If you work in private security, expect the sort of thing. It's NOT a regular job. Unless you are someone's favorite you will be treated this way. It's also not a job for women - many security posts that you are sent to will not like having a female on their post and will treat you accordingly.

Say it ain't so, Joe

AUTHOR: Sgt - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 17, 2008

Geez, Joe, you sure don't like Suckyuritass much. Unfortunately, everything you have said is true or worse in Austin. Abusive supervisors, reverse and age discrimination, and things I've never seen before are SOP at Suckyuritass. The ALERTLINE for problems the local branch won't handle or created goes straight back to the local branch HR. That means being called in by the person you complained about to defend yourself while not being allowed to prove your complaint. You will be terminated or made a rover (think Motel 6, graveyard, crack dealers, 20-30 hours per week max). An intelligent, well educated, reliable, dependable white person will get a low paying s**t post and uneducated blacks with a GED who come in late every day and call off once a week get the best posts and top pay. Surprise, the branch manager and HR mgr. are black.
For those who would say SUE THE BASTARDS, try talking to a lawyer about that. They all say reverse discrimination is the hardest case to win and not worth it in the end if you do win. Therefore, they won't touch it. I even had a black lawyer tell me that he knew they were discriminating against white people at Suckyuritass, Austin, and he hated them for it because it made white people hate blacks, but there was no chance of winning a reverse discrimination case.
Unfortunately, Suckyuritass is the largest security company in town.
I have not yet found or heard of a good security company in Austin.

they don't care about the employees

AUTHOR: Anon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 12, 2008

I am still employed with Securitas, near Chicago, but I will probably quit very soon. Problem is I don't have another job lined up. I am sick of having to watch out for them trying to f*** me over. I work alone, but when I occasionally see other employees, I hear the same complaints from them that I have. These reports on this website are convincing me that leaving this company is the right thing to do.
