In April of this year I signed a lease on a house in Santa Fe.  In July a man appeared on our doorstep from a company called SBS - Select Portfolio Services announcing that he worked for the mortgage servicing company and that he expected the house to be empty.  What followed was several weeks of investigating on our part to determine that the house had be legally sold to our landlord.  In the meantime, the law firm who works for SBS has advised an attorney who we contacted that they has listed the house in their database as being occupied by squatters.

SBS is a combination of venality, stupidity and incompetence.  My understanding in talking to the local real estate agents and lawyers is that they are known for this kind of behavior and apparently they get away with it all the time.  It's outrageous that our law enforcement cannot seem to stop them from harrassing people.

Since July just passed, how could you have spent "several" weeks in all of this research?

Also, you mention talking to Real Estate Agents and Lawyers. But you didn't mention anything about actually talking to your Landlord? If your landlord legitimately bought the house and is current in the Mortgage why are they not dealing with this company?  Wouldn't your landlord be the first person you talked to and shouldn't they have said "Oh..let me take care of it" or "Oh...let me find out what is going on"?

Seems like there is some pieces of information being left out, and it may be pieces that you are not being told by your landlord.
