In January 2008 I went in to Sons Suzuki where I purchased a 2007 Suzuki XL-7. When I went into the dealership the sales people I worked with informed me that because I had a repo on my credit that they could still work out a deal for me but I would put the car into someone elses name. I informed them that I did not want my car payments to be more than $325.00 so they stated that it would be no problem. When they wrote the deal up they put the car in my grandmothers name and my friends name they drove all the way to hinesville,ga to have my grandmother sign the papers and my friend was here in conyers,ga. They put on the paper work that my friend was my grandmothers granddaughter and that she lived in the same household as my grandmother. They said that the car would remain in there name for 6 months only and that I ould be making the payments on the car and it would still help my credit because in 6 months we could come back and trade the truck in for something newer with lower payments and put the car in my name by showing proof via bank statements that I was making the payments on the car. They stated that my payments would be 647.57 and I told them that was to high for me to pay. The dealership cut me a check for half the payments for 6 months and said that I only had to come out of my pocket with 325.00 and take the difference each month from the check they wrote me to make my car payment. After only a month of have the car it started acting up I took the car in for service and they said they had to replace a strut or something they kept my car for 2 and a half months while I was in a loaner. They gave me the run around everytime I called in it got so bad that I have to call numerous people at corporate office and complain I even to the dealership and watched them on several occasions and realized that they had not touched my car at all. When i went to look at my car I noticed that someone had been eating in my car and was driving it around because of the milage difference and it was more than just test driving milage. I was very upset and the only thing they did for me was reimburse one car payment. After my 6 moths I went into the dealership to try and get out of the car and all of the people that were their were gone. When I spoke with the new manager that was there he basically told me that there was nothing he could do for me after arguing with him back and forth he said that he would try and get me inton another car by trading in the suzuki xl-7 when i found the car i wanted he called me back and said that he couldn't do anything unless i made a down payment of $7,000. I told him that was rediculous and they gave us a bad deal on this car and something needs to be done and i would contact a lawyer if need be He said he would give me a call. Needless to say I never heard from him again and when i would call up there to leave messages or go by there they would say he is not in or he is with a customer. I have been trying to get out of this car for over six monthst and i am pretty much upside down i still owe $26,000 on this car there is so much negative equity it's crazy. This is a 07 suzuki for christ sakes and it's only worth $9-$10,000. Something needs to be done about this I know that this dealership is closed down now but what can I or my grandmother do to get out of this car. I am at whits end with this and I would like to speak with a lawyer or someone ASAP! This has got to be against the law.

Not much you can do.

You apparently agreed to this cockamamie deal. Sadly, your friend and grandmother were sucked in as well. The old "you can refinance in 6 months" is a common dealer lie. It shows up here fairly often. The problem with that is that you should know that with a repo and bad credit, there's no way you'd qualify for a refinance in 6 months.

Given the ridiculous payments and balance due, it also looks like you didn't pay much attention to the purchase price or the interest rate. Bottom line is that it's not illegal to pay too much for a car. Since the contracts that laid this mess out were signed, it's unlikely that you have any legal recourse.
