I received a fraudulent citation notice on march 5th from south bay expressway. It stated that on February 17th, my car went through the Otay Toll Plaza and did not pay the toll at 6:02 am headed south.  I find this totally interesting, since we live in Colfax, California and have not been any where near the San Diego area in 10 years! Not to mention the many hundreds of miles and hours of driving to get there.

The citation number is C113739396 and no specific location but a number which I traced via the web to the San Diego area.  We are retired and babysit our grandson on Wed-Fri every week, so I find it absurd to assume we were in San Diego on the day in question and back to Colfax to babysit unless we are able to perform out of body maneuvers!

I will be calling these idiots on Monday to contest this and have sent a written affidavit of non-liability..They better be able to show me a clear camera shot of us driving and our license plate! I do not trust these people at all. We are both quite identifiable..over 60, long white hair and a ZZ top beard on my husband..this is a scam!!

Hello,

We're sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, technology isn't perfect and sometimes when a photo is taken of a license plate, the numbers or letters are read or entered incorrectly in our system. This type of error is straightforward and easily proven. When you call or fill out the dispute section on the back of the citation, the toll violations team will go back and review the day/time of the infraction and look at the license plate in question to verify the characters. In the case of mistaken license plate characters, this can all be taken care of with a simple phone call. There are folks who choose to evade tolls, which is why we have a video surveillance system in place and take photos of license plates. Citations are generated and sent out automatically when a toll is not paid by FasTrak account, Cash or Credit Card. If a number or letter is misread, it’s simple - just call us and we’ll check the image and transfer the toll to the correct plate.

Thank you for providing your citation number in your report.  Because you did, we were able to look up the citation and did verify that, in fact, the license plate number was misread.  The Y in the license plate belonging to the vehicle that did not pay its toll was mistaken for a Z.  We have transferred the citation to the correct license plate number tonight.  While our Customer Service Center is not open over the weekend, you can visit our website at www.sbxthe125.com to verify that this citation has been closed.

We would never intentionally charge you or anyone else for a trip on South Bay Expressway that was not yours. While we try to keep these errors to a minimum, sometimes they do happen. All it takes is a simple phone call and we’re always glad to correct them.
