Been using Square since December of 2010. Never had even one issue until July 19th, 2017.

Collecting payment from a customer (while telling them how cool and easy it is to use the square device) and then get a error saying my account is no longer linked to my device.

Embarrassing, and for a first time customer giving me their personal information does not help with building the trust you need to stay and expand your business. But just thinking in my head it must be a glitch. Get back to the office and log in to my square account and see the message ...

"Payment card processing permanently deactivated."

And a link. I click on the link and it's their terms of service. But it's the whole document, not the section they may (or may not) be claiming I violated. No email stating what I did wrong and as the account has been deactivated I am no longer able to get the code you need to call and talk to them.

So sent an email and just keep getting a canned reply that the account is deactivate and I can not do anything about it.

So your cut off from being able to run cards with no notice and no recourse whatsoever.

I am out the discount I had to give my customer for not being able to take the credit card I said I would upfront, I am out 3 days of trying to contact a real person at square and the time I had to take to setup with a new company to run my credit card sales.

In almost 7 years with this company I never had refund issued or a chargback. Perfect record and I don't even get to talk to a person?

No business can afford to have their clients payments rejected for no reason, with no communication and no way to get a hold of a live person to correct whatever the issue may be. They got my back account numbers, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. And offer no way to get in contact with them? Really bad business. Have an issue and ignore your customer??? If your with them now make sure you have a 2nd way to take cards. And if your not with them, stay far away!

Square Is Not A Real Merchant Account

AUTHOR: Ray At Tampabay Merchant Services - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 23, 2017

This is not a defense of Square or their somewhat misleading advertising.  They make it sound so easy to use their service and for many businesses it can be, however if one day you have trouble with Square, you will find customer service is pretty much nonexistence.

It is important to understand the risk associated with processing credit card cards (which includes Square). I represent several ISO’s which is the prospective I can bring to this discussion. A cardholder can dispute a transaction with the card issuer as far back as 12 to 18 months after a card is used for a transaction.  When a dispute occurs, there is a debit to the merchant account or Square Account while the dispute is researched.  If the merchant / business doesn’t have the funds to cover the debit, the amount comes out of processor pocket.   In many ways, a merchant account is like a line of credit.  A traditional credit card processor will underwrite an account on the front end to establish a ceiling of how much a business can accept safely to support the risk.  Square does not do this on the front end, but will manage the risk on the back end.  Therefore, many businesses using Square have experienced what has described here.

On the other hand, if you want to avoid this, seek a true merchant account, not one thru Square. We provide services and ongoing relationship to be there for a business when the need arises.

I hope this helps. Ray at Tampa Bay Merchant Services
