In the state of Florida there are 3, yes three agencies that handle child support. First, there is the clerk of courts. Second, there is the disbursement unit and finally there is the Florida Department of Revenue. All three are disconnected heads of the same monster. One tells you to pay directly until date X occurs where upon a deduction from the pay check occurs. But... they keep a tab on you. That's right. You pay DIRECTLY to your ex and they will assume you are NOT paying at all. In my case, that went for nearly 4 months before the payroll deduction took effect. I was paying my Ex, the exact amount required per THEIR guidelines (state disbursement unit.) I get a letter in the mail saying I'm now more than 12 weeks behind. I call all 3 agencies and none can help. I finally have to take a day off of work and go to one of the centers. You arrive and you are IMMEDIATELY treated as a criminal. The people behind the bullet proof glass don't give a red cent about your issue. And offer little help, but it isn't their fault. The fault is directly with the state and the way things are done. They can tack on as much money as they think you owe, with out a court order, with out a judge signing off. They send no record to you until you are supposedly so far behind your license, by the way also doesn't require a court order, could very well be suspended. You must have your ex fill out a paper and file that with the clerk of courts, then a judge must sign off on it. If this happens just before tax time, you can kiss your tax return good bye. The state will seize that as well. In my case, I will probably have to go back to court to get my tax return back.
