IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THATS BECAUSE IT IS

If you want a job/career you can be proud of, not ashamed of and have to apologize for, avoid SteelTown Promotions. They are extremely vague in their answers but have the amazing ability to make you feel excited about working for this company! I was asked if I would be able to make it to their office Mondays-Fridays between the hours of 9-5 for work. I was led to believe I would be working in the office on a team to come up with creative marketing ideas for sports teams, spas, and other Fortune 500 companies. Their website tells you to look on their Facebook page for a list of clients, but their Facebook page tells you to call the office for a list of clients. When I called the office for a list of clients, they told me to look on their website. This should have been my first clue.

Your first interview will be VERY professional. If you are "lucky enough" to get a second interview, you will be told to wear your best suit with comfortable walking shoes for an 8-9 hour "corporate shadow/interview." What you will ACTUALLY be doing is being thrown in a tiny, old car with a bunch of teenagers/young college age kids who drive like they are invincible and smoke until the car and everything in it reeks. Oh yes, businesses love it when you stink of cigarettes, even if you don't smoke. COME ON!!! Before we even left the SteelTown building, the driver smashed into the car parked behind us and just drove away! I should have just gotten out of the car and gone home.

On top of the wreckless driving and being terrified I would not make it there and back in one piece, they play the most offensive rap music at such loud levels that you will have a headache, feel uncomfortable from the racist language and swearing, AND stink before you even get to the "job site." Apparently you will be partnered off everyday, so you get to ride at least an hour in the same situation everyday you work! No thank you. On my ride-along, we stopped at the gas station to buy snacks and drinks, but no gas, even though we were on empty. Then we made a personal stop so the driver could visit his friend. That's very professional. We eventually did stop again later for gas. Terrible time management.

I was told I would start out making $30,000-$35,000 depending on my sales. After hearing the "corporate salespeople" (AKA kids) tell me about the pay scale and procedure, I see no way they can make anywhere near that figure. The person I was shadowing was obsessing over how many units he needs to sell today and tomorrow so he can pay rent. Seriously, if the pay is so good, why are you struggling to make rent which is due in 2 days? Oh, and he cant afford to get his car fixed, which is why he has been paying gas money for someone else to drive for weeks. Gas money is apparently one of the many, many items you can write off on your taxes at the end of the year, but not get reimbursed for. That means a lot of money out of your own pocket, right from the start.

When we got to the "job site," I found out we were getting dumped off. The driver left us in a shopping center where we went to each and every business to sell Pirates tickets. No, we did not have appointments to discuss promotions with the business owners, as I was led to believe. We were there selling individual tickets. We were soliciting. I was specifically told to ignore all the "NO SOLICITING" signs in the doors because 1% of the people that work in the NO SOLICITING places will buy from you anyway. After we annoyed every single business owner in the shopping center, we walked up and down the road to hit all the single building businesses. I was told that the goal was to talk to at least 100 people per day. So there I am, walking on the shoulder of a 4 lane highway, as fast as we can walk, IN MY BEST SUIT, getting road salt and dirt blown in my face as cars drive by for several hours in the middle of February.  I later found out that the other job candidate couldnt even keep up with his corporate salesperson. He was walking way too fast!

The hell of it was that less than an hour into this corporate shadow/interview, I knew it was not for me because it was a complete load of lies. TOO BAD! You are STUCK there for the remainder of the day because the job site is over 30 minutes from the office, and you all crammed into one car to get there. No one is going to take you back. They dont get paid if they dont stay and sell to the people who dont yell at them and tell them they have NO SOLICITING signs posted.

At lunch break (if you get one I did, the other candidate did not), they illustrate the employee structure, which was not even close to the structure described in my first interview! Why was I even surprised by that point? I made the mistake of letting my person know I was definitely not going to take the job, so that made for a very uncomfortable afternoon 5-6 more hours! I wish I had continued to pretend to be interested so I wouldnt have had to experience the attitude switch from him.

Of course they were in a rush to get back to the office at the end of the day, so the drive back was even scarier than before. We were speeding through downtown Pittsburgh and literally came within a foot or two of hitting 3 different pedestrians at 3 different crosswalks during rush hour. Our driver freely gave pedestrians the finger and cursed at them too.

When we made it back to the office THANK GOD!!!- we were expected to fill out a form and talk to Steve, the boss. Steve was also lacking professionalism with his black eye and banged up face, having been in a bar fight over the weekend.

As long as this complaint was, I did leave out some details. The point is this is a scam. Do not waste your time. I want those 12 hours of my life back, and some money to pay for dry cleaning my suit.
