In 2007, during the mortgage crisis, my father was in danger of losing his home to foreclosure when he was solicited by the the Stewardship Fund with a way to keep his home. My father signed papers that reduced his mortgage and allowed him to keep his home. I always felt it was something fishy about the transaction when my father said that a notary was coming to the house for him to sign the paperwork. Also, I kept asking him where were the deeds to the prpoperty. He could never explain the transaction.

Over the next few years, the home was sold or transfered to several diffrerent lenders: Home Solutions Partners IV Reo, LLC, Halo Asset Management, Home Opportunity, LLC and Transportation Alliance Bank (TAB). In 2010 my father died and he was the only signer on the mortgage. My mother is still living and as the rightful heir, she wanted to know all the details on the home transaction, and wanted deeds to the property. She did not want to pay for a home without deeds in her name.

We contacted Halo Asset Management to let them know my father was deceased. At their request, we sent a copy of the death certificate and my mother's request to have the deed transfered into her name or another family member. Our request went unanswered, which made my mother even more suspicious and leary about sending her money to them. We tried several more times to reach them, and they kept asking for a death certificate which we'd already sent. I finally was able to reach someone and my mom requested that the home be transferred into my name. I began the loan application process with someone at Halo Asset Management, sending papaerwork, tax returns, etc., everything necessary to apply for the loan. We corresponded for several months, then all of a sudden I stopped getting responses.

My mom and I did some more research and dug up the initial papers my dad signed on the house and discovered it was a land contract and he'd actually signed over the deeds to the house. I am pretty confident my dad did not know what he was signing. He was 72 years old at the time and very vunerable and desperate to save his home. All the money that was paid on the home was just rent!

The last straw was the letter my mom received last month; a 30 day notice to vacate the premises or be evicted. What will she do now? This is outrageous and purely a lease buy-back scheme! They prey upon the elderly and desperate homeowners. What recourse does she have? We need help and fast!
