I too have had a toxic mold based experience with Stuart Management at Maryland Park Apartments in Saint Paul, MN. Me and my family moved into an affordable housing nightmare in 2008. They made it seem like a really nice place to live. We were stoked until move in day. The crime there was ridiculous and their "security" was a joke. Shootings, fights, drugs, even people having sex in the night on our porch. It was disgusting and awful.

Then to make matters worse me and my family started coming down with random illnesses and having breathing issues. I began experiencing mind shattering headaches that would last days and also developed breathing troubles. We were all healthy individuals before moving there. We enjoyed excercise and outdoor play alot. Us being myself, my partner, and our then 2yo daughter. All that slowly halted as the illnesses got worse and we couldn't go outside anyway due to the neighbors.

One day we discovered rodents also and reported it and were told that they did not have a rodent problem and it probably got in becuz we left our porch door open...which was impossible becuz we like never went outside the apartment! Soon after that we had a leak in our bathroom ceiling which was previously water damaged as I was totally unaware of toxic mold and it's effects at this point. They "fixed" the leak and came and did a patch over job on the ceiling.

Months go by and I'm getting worse everyday, my Dr runs a billion tests and can't figure out what's wrong with me. The headaches made me bed ridden and it was terrifying to have no answers.

Finally one day we sit down to watch an episode of Mystery Diagnosis and a family was experiencing alot of our same issues after having pipes burst in their kitchen. At this point the ceiling was leaking terribly again and rapid black growth was occuring (it was also there before the first leak happened and got worse with that leak as well).

We did research about toxic mold causes, and symptoms on humans and I immediately took steps to do something about it by reporting it to the city. I was livid that for a year we lived in those conditions and I was living with the fear that I was dying of some mysterious illness. The management was going to just patch it over again but according to the CDC proper measures are to completely remove the water damaged material and in a place that toxic mold is known to be growing the walls gotta come down etc etc. The material is now considered toxic waste as well and must be disposed as such. Even having the city come in the management was furious with us and tried denying that they were ever notified of the leak and the ceiling. Then they themselves gave me copies of all the times I called to repot the issue over the year...

The city inspector who came about the compaint was totally on our side in the beginning. She was livid and wanted them to properly handle the issue. But the apartments receive government funding and after having a private talk with the management she came back to us as if we were being unreasonable and she wrote off the poor job they did in making their repairs.

The good part is that after I told my Dr. about the mold she too was furious with the management and wrote us a letter that basicly saved and changed our lives. We got emergency assistance to move away from that place right away. Their entire building is infested with rodents, roaches, toxic mold, and crime. I thought it was just this property with these issues, but aparently Staurt Managment does not value the lives of their tenants. I broke into tears when the manager of the building came to my apartment stone cold like I had done something wrong for trying to help save lives. I told her how for a whole year I was suffering in a way I thought I was dying and no one could give me any answers as to what was happening to me. If any action is to come against them I would love to be a part of it. I too am not sure where to turn about this or what to do to make something really happen. They cannot be allowed to treat lives like this. They know all about their toxic mold issue and just don't seem to care about it. And to make it all worse they get government money to stay running their business...and shocking yet is that the city I cried out for help to ignored us because of their involvement with the property.

Due to afforability we live over 200 miles away from the Twin Cities in a very small town. Sad becuz we're so far from family and friends now w/o alot of means to see them, but wonderful as we are paying less than our old rent which was based on income and all utilities are included. It's a larger space as well. We have a dog and a cat. We can go outside and play and be a family now. First day out here our illnesses began to fade. It was the biggest relief ever. I'm glad to be alive again, but for the sake of others I want them to pay for how they treat people and get away with it.

Also ironicly our new apartment had a flood occur and before we moved in they were finishing up the repairs. They did it the right way. Tore out walls, cabinets, all flooring and redid it all. When we did our first showing the place was bare bones and we admired the care put in and knew this place wouldn't do like Staurt Management did.
