Long story- I'll try to keep it short. I started service with Cellular One 17 years ago. Suncom AT&T bought Cellular One, and we kept service with the new owner for several years. One day I decided I wanted a feature-rich phone, and Suncom AT&T did not offer what I wanted. I went with Cingular for one year (after having been with Suncom AT&T for 15 years), then switched back to Suncom AT&T because Cingular coverage was spotty.

In December, 2004, I received a phone call telling me I was three months behind in my payments. I provided a credit card number and paid the bill. After getting off the phone, my wife told me the bill was only TWO months late, not three! I called them back immediately, and was told that the payment was for 2 months of service, and 87.00 in roaming fees. Let me digress- when we went back with Suncom AT&T, we went with the Suncom Unplan.

Our phone said "FREE" anytime we were on "home turf", and did not have to pay for any minutes or roaming. This was from around July 2003 until around April 2004, not quite a full year. We received a letter in the mail that said our current plan was no longer available. I called them, and "upgraded" to the Suncom Unplan Platinum. I was told "no roaming within Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and parts of West Virginia. I was told that (and I quote) ANYTIME the word SUNCOM was in the display of my phone, we were on "home turf" and no roaming charges would apply. COOL! That is, until we went on vacation to Los Angeles, California! My and my wife's phones both prominently displayed SUNCOM AT&T in the display, so we assumed we were on "home turf" and it was OK to use the phones at will- after all, we wouldn't have to pay for any minutes. WRONG-O! The Suncom rep explained it to me that if the phone said SUNCOM AT&T that it was not the same thing as SUNCOM! Well EXCUUUUSE ME! How the heck am I supposed to know the difference???

Anyhow, I refused, and still refuse to pay for the roaming charges, and my credit card company back-charged Suncom after finding in my favor. Suncom offered to abate the minutes if I'd admit wrongdoing and sign for another year's service. NO WAY! I did nothing wrong! I terminated service by giving them 29 days notice, which they said was not long enough. They said I had to give them 30 days, and if I owed them any money on my renewal date, that the contract would automatically be renewed and they would charge me another $200 if I stopped paying. How stupid is that???

When I signed on for service, they charged me for two months of service, so I let my last month of service ride on that original extra payment. The entire 30 day period that I knew I was going to have my service turned off, they pestered the heck out of me in spite of me repeatedly telling them I was stopping service with them! Every day some jerk called me and wanted to know when I was going to send payment for that month! I guess they don't take notes??? Now they're sending collection agencies after me over the $87.00 in roaming minutes and they've added charges that have yet to be explained (they're asking for $178.00).

I say it's vague and ambiguous that my phone display showed SUNCOM AT&T in the display in California. How am I supposed to know that SUNCOM and SUNCOM AT&T are two separate companies??? I sent both Suncom and the collection agency cease and desist letters, but the collection agency is still calling me. How the heck do you explain something like this to someone (Suncom) who apparently has bricks for brains? After all, my credit card company saw right through their garbage. You'd think that would be enough proof for them that they're wrong! What next? I won't be going back to Suncom, the company that "doesn't get it"!

It doesn't hurt my feelings

AUTHOR: Web - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 27, 2006

I switched from Suncom to Verizon back in July 2005 because of Suncom's high-pressure customer retention tactics. I won't be back. I get a free comparable phone every two years just for asking at Verizon. Since I bought a $400.00 phone at sign-up, I get a free $400.00 phone every two years. And I've been offered abated minutes if I accidentally go over a few minutes with no hassle. So far, in the year I've been with Verizon, I've never gone over. I never had any problems with Suncom until they tried to screw me over. And no, I was not aware of a "coverage area" until the issue came up of Suncom in California not being the same as Suncom in South Carolina. I got switched to the Unplan Platinum plan over the phone when Suncom shut down the "regular" Unplan. I did not go to any office or look at any map on a wall. I did not have my coverage area explained to me. I was just told on the phone that instead of the word "FREE", the new keyword that let me know I was on my free Unplan Platinum minutes would be the word "SUNCOM". Let me back up and repeat- nobody showed me any coverage map and said "this is your area" when my arm was twisted and I was forced to sign up for this new Platinum unplan over the phone. I didn't find out about the "restricted area" until after I had the problem. I was happy with my old Unplan and didn't want to switch. I was told by Suncom that any time the word Suncom appeared in the display, my calls would be free. It was a lie. And that's the truth- believe what you want. You don't have to take my word for it- take a look all over the internet and see for yourself exactly how many complaints are out there about Suncom's roaming fees and in addition, signal strength problems as compared to other companies. I'm not alone. See for yourself- go to google and type in the keywords Suncom S--KS. Suncom was good when it was Suncom AT&T (I didn't even know they were just plain "Suncom" until my problems with them began). I've had zero problems since switching to Verizon, and in fact, I'm much happier. And I wasn't alone in deciding that Suncom had ripped me off. My credit card company got involved and found in my favor! You're just trolling and won't listen to reason... you remind me of a Suncom CS rep. I think you're enjoying this....

how do we know your phone

AUTHOR: Joseph - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 27, 2006

read suncom out in california? just because you said so? Well, their is a way of verifiying that is by looking at the towers and whoise towers. But the fact remains that you knew the coverage area as stated in your first post. And you need to accept the fact that these charges are valid and wont go away now or ever.

Pay them and accept your fate plain and simple. and as for not having a contract, I hope your phone wont go bad and then you start complaining about noone giving you a free phone or a discount because that wont happen at all.

More food for thought again mr suncom customer.

Why did my phone have Suncom in the display?

AUTHOR: Web - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 24, 2006

This is the question Suncom could not answer, and you're ducking. If I was truly roaming, why did my phone say "SUNCOM" on the display? This is the "notification", per my contract, that let me know my calls were to be free. It was there in the display, plain as the nose on your face. So why is Suncom trying to charge me roaming charges for the calls when the symbol telling me my calls were free was shown on the display during each and every call I made? That's the question no Suncom rep can answer, and you're dodging. Was that part of your training? Dodge questions, don't answer them?

once again bearer of knowledge

AUTHOR: Joseph - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 24, 2006

I hate to tell you by your own admission you knew the coverage area, so the blame is squarely on you not suncom. I no longer work for them thank you however, right is right. typical customer who knows the coverage area and continued to use the service and does not want to pay for it. If I was still there I would not credit them off now or ever. You fail to accept the fact that you knew where you were and did not care.

and if the charges are not paid, and you use somebodies elses service and you are on suncoms tower, you may not be able to do that.

Food for thought.

thank you

UPDATE

AUTHOR: Web - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 24, 2006

If I was roaming, why did the display of my phone say "SUNCOM"? No representative of your company has been able to explain that to me successfully yet. My agreement with the company was that any time the display said SUNCOM, I was not roaming. No matter where I was. It used to say "FREE" whenever I was in a free area, but Suncom changed that, not me. When I made the calls in dispute, the display said "SUNCOM" in the window.

Suncom used to be Cellular One here. I was with Cellular One since 1989. Suncom AT&T purchased Cellular One. When Suncom AT&T purchased Cellular One, I stayed with them. Apparently, unknown to me, Suncom bought Suncom AT&T in my area. How the heck am I (or anyone else) supposed to know that Suncom AT&T and Suncom are not the same entity??? I received NO notification of this, by the way. I paid my bill at the same building for 16 out of the last 17 years. (Except for a two-year period when they did not accept payments in person for any reason- another Suncom oddity that was later corrected.)

I won't pay something I don't owe. And I did not accept the blackmail they tried either (I was offered to abate the minutes if I would sign a year-long contract). I had not been under contract for 15 years, why would I choose to go on one now?

You're making me sound like a deadbeat, but this is totally not the case. It's a matter of principle. I don't pay bills I don't owe.

Besides, my credit card company investigated and found in my favor, then reversed the charges against Suncom. There's more to this story than you realize. You're wrong, but you just don't know it. You've been brainwashed by your company trainers. Repeat after me: my company is not ALWAYS right. There are exceptions.

I hate to be the bearer of knowledge however Suncom has been in excistence since 98 and not 16 years. So that part is in error. And if it is not the money, then why are you complaining? and putting on a report.

Personally, I am the type of person who could care less about customer service. You can curse me out and scream at me for all I care. If you have a great rate of value that works for me. But if you are one of those snooty motels or hotels that charge arm and a leg and lean heavily on customer service forget you.

You used the minutes and you knew the coverage area so you need to pay the bill. you were aware of the coverage area so it is not like you knew what to expect.

pay your bill....

16 year customer means nothing to Suncom!

AUTHOR: Web - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 11, 2006

RESPONSE TO THE REBUTTAL:
I am the owner of a local hotel. This means I'm in the customer service business. I KNOW customer service inside, outside, and upside-down. I've NEVER asked Suncom to abate any overage minutes in the entire history of my account with them.

This is not a money issue, I spend that much on dinner when I take my wife out! It was overtly obvious that I had made an honest mistake in thinking that since my display had Suncom in the phone window, I was not roaming.

The "correct" response from Suncom Customer Service would have been to abate the mistaken minutes to keep a 16-year (out of the last 17 years) customer happy, apologize for any misunderstanding, fix the system so that this mistake cannot occur with me or any other customer in the future, and NOT to threaten me to admit wrongdoing or force me to commit to a year-long auto-renewing contract. I had not been under contract in the previous 15 years. I remained with Suncom (Suncom AT&T? I'm still unsure..) because I was happy with the service. Why would I want to be forced into a committed contract situation after being in a free-will situation for 15 years?

15 years of customer loyalty means SQUAT to Suncom, as proven by their poor customer service in this instance. As a side note- my brother also recently cancelled his THREE Unplan Suncom phones because of being charged for roaming minutes EVEN THOUGH HE HAS NEVER LEFT HIS GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE AREA!

Suncom really needs to get it together on their roaming charges.

that you were aware of the coverage area and the possible roaming charges if you were out. Sorry, I did not know California was part of your coverage area.

You are just trying to skirt the issue and not pay and they will put it on your credit report for failure to pay for valid charges.

And it may hamper you to use your current cell phone on suncom towers. Just to let you know. They may stop you from using them because of the failure to pay.
