SunTrust Bank My Head is about to explode... Atlanta Georgia
I initially signed up for a SunTrust checking account in May of 2010. Everything was okay seeing as how I normally only used my account to pay an occasional bill and small purchases. Then one day in September of this year was when everything went haywire. I check my balalnce via online banking like a madwoman and noticed that I was to be overdrawn(by around 8$) from some pending charges. I knew I could avoid an overdraft charge if I made a deposit from the end of the day. I happened to make a return to a retail store which(much to my suprise) left me with a positive balance per online banking(crisis averted!). That following Sunday, I made another deposit and I checked my online banking the next day.
My jaw almost fell to the floor when I saw that I once again had a negative balance due to an overdraft charge. The following day I contacted the call center and I was informed(as I suspected) that b/c I had already gotten my 'courtesy' overdraft credit for the year their hands were tied and that ultimately, I did not matter what balance I saw on Thursday , but the pending transactions caused me to be overdrawn by 0.14!! 0.14?!? Which resulted in a 36$ overdraft charge. I refused to believe that any of this was happening and decided to go into a branch to resolve this matter.
Upon speaking with a very nice branch manager, the following day she re-explained the order in which the charges hit my account... blah.. blah... I still could not justify any of this seeing as at one point I had a POSITIVE BALANCE the night before without any NEW pending charges the next day. After I realized that I was getting nowhere with them, I made the decision to close my account as at this point it was only overdrawn due to THEIR FEES. When I called to close my account, they informed me that due to an $-11.11 balance, they were unable to close my account with a negative balance. Wanting to be done with the situation, I regretfully made a 12$ deposit via and ATM on Thursday night, unfortunately after the call center was closed.
Of course the next day I wanted to pull all of my hairs out when I checked my online banking only to find I was now 35.11 overdrawn due to an extended overdraft charge!!! I refuse to pay another red cent to them, so when I called to see how long it would take for them to close my account, they once again informed me that I cannot close an account with a negative balance and that it could take 60-90 days for THEM to close the account due to overdrafts and inactivity. So by my math they can stand to gain another $648 in extended overdraft fees while holding my hostage to a bank account that I no longer want! Yay!
