Me and my family (we are Black) were on our way to Miami Florida from Cincinnati for a 5 day cruise. We had come a long way when we stopped at Denny's in Ormond Beach, Florida for dinner. I picked up a green "traveler's guide" so we could find a reasonable place to sleep for the night.

I located the super 8 motel coupon which stated "32.95 for a double room". I told the others that this was perfect since we didn't want to spend alot of money before the cruise. The expiration date on the coupon was 1-31-03.

When we found the motel, I went in and talked to the night manager. It was around 9:00 pm. His name was Mick, an oriental man, whose name I found out in the morning because he wouldn't give it to me. When I showed him the coupon, he said he wouldn't honor the coupon because it was in the manager discrection whether or not to honor it.

He further told me it was written on the coupon. It was nowhere to be found. I read him the coupon out loud. He repeatedly told me that it was his decision no matter what the coupon said and that the coupon didn't even apply before April 1. I asked him why was there an expiration date of Jan 31, 2003 if the coupon wasn't applicable until April 1? He again told me it was the manager's decision as to whether or not to use the coupon.

He said he would rent me the room at the regular price of $69.99/nite for a double. I went out and told my husband what he said. He told me to go back in and get the man's name and address and we would contact a lawyer when we got back home and sue the motel chain for false advertisement and discrimination.

I went back in and told him what my husband said. He would not give me his name. I told him we would see him in court. He "then" asked to see the coupon again. He re-read the coupon for the 4th time and "decided" to honor it. Since it was late and everyone was tired from the long hours on the road, we took the room.

In the morning, I asked the morning manager what was the name of the night manager. That's when he told me Mick. I told him what had happened the night before and he stated he would talk to him, however, I doubt if anything was ever done about it.

I feel I should be compensated for the hassle that the night manager gave us. We were already tired and to be told that a coupon won't be honored because of manager discretion is absurd. I realize $40 is not alot of money for some people however, it is the principle of the matter. I doubt if that would have happened if I was of a different race.

I take racial issues very seriously. I live in Cincinnati. There are racial issues here I deal with on a daily basis. When I go on vacation I don't appreciate being treated any less than anyone else.

The hotels I have worked at start refusing those coupons when the occupancy hits 80%.

AUTHOR: Jean - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 25, 2003

Just a note on the Traveler Discount Guides -- In the beginning of each booklet you will find an explanation of why hotels put out these coupons, and that the hotels do NOT always accept them. It's all there in black and white, there's just too much info to put on a little tiny coupon.

I have worked at a few hotels and have had to explain this to quite a few people. That desk clerk was not being racist. He's taught to refuse those coupons on "sell out" nights, which are nights that are expected to sell out, even if they are not yet sold out. The hotels I have worked at start refusing those coupons when the occupancy hits 80%.

That desk clerk was doing as he was instructed, unfortunately, no one told him about the page at the beginning of the Discount Guides explaining that the coupons are not always accepted. He seemed to think it was written on the coupons themselves.

seems to be no real evidence of racial discrimination

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 13, 2003

Hello Michelle,

I apologize for the rather hateful writings of other posters here.

As far as your complaint, there seems to be no real evidence of racial discrimination. Yes, the manager was, to put it politely, not very helpful, but that does not imply he was not helpful because of your race.

I would suggest that you write a letter to their corporate office, due to your apparant good writing skills, and outline the problem. Follow it up in a week or two with a phone call. It has been my experience that when a letter is written, followed by a phone call, results are generally favorable to the consumer.

Hopefully that helps, and good luck!

Nothing to do with Race.

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 13, 2003

After reading all the posts, the point in this whole ORDEAL is being overlooked. I will tell you that hotels advertise in this book and put disclaimers, blackout dates and various other mechanisms to protect themselves. If there is a limited number of rooms at the rate in the book, the you are at the mercy of the hotel.

If a hotel is running a high occupancy whether they expected to or not, they do not want to take a discounted rate when they dont have to.

HOWEVER, if they are not full or don't expect to be full, they are completeloy missing the boat by letting you walk out the door. The bottom line is that if they dont rent that room for the night, it's lost revenue that they will never get back. Operating several hotels, I would have very serious problems with any employee who let any money walk out of the door.

Getting a lawyer simply tells me that you are mad which is fine but it wont do you one bit of good. If you want to pres the issue you contact the department of busines and professional regulations. They will investigate this by going to the hotel.

They will take the coupon with them. If the ad says they have a limited number of rooms at that rate, the hotel will have to show that one or more rooms were rented at the advertised rate.

If nobody was in the hotel at that rate an the hotel did not fill, you have a legitimate complaint and the DBPR will discuss it with the hotel and ask that they take care of the situation to the satisfaction of the guest. I would tell you that race should have nothing to do with it.

As I said, I operate several hotels and we advertise in the books that you mentioned. We have the necessary disclaimers to protect oursleves. These book are a valuable source of guests and unless the hotel is full, we will always honor the rate listed. These books are not cheap to adertise in so if you run an ad and do not take the business when it's at your desk, the that hotel is completely wasting their money. In my opinion, the hotel is poorly managed. Hope this helps

To Tim in Michigan and Anon in Miami thanks for understanding what I was trying to convey. I was in no way trying to come off sounding the least bit racist, but when you live this scenario day in and day out you tend to get a bit tired of it afterwhile. I have contacted the headquarters of the hotel and left a complaint also. Nothing will stop me from coming to Florida. I know everybody is not like that.

Sorry for the way you were treated

AUTHOR: Anon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 09, 2003

Hi Michelle--

I am sorry your were treated badly on your vacation. Florida is a tourism state, and no tourist should be treated rudely when the local economy relies so heavily on out of state visitors.

I just moved to this state. I have used those green travel books, and I can tell you from my experience that many times I have been told that the rate wasn't available to me. (I was a white female, traveling alone).

The coupon booklets are advertising, and once the hotel has you in the lobby, they of course don't want to discount a room. Most of those hotels do have teeny-weeny disclaimers on them, with black-out dates or weekend rates, or they say that there are only a few rooms available at the discount rate.

I found that if a hotel was almost full (look at the parking lot to see how many cars are there), they will not honor the discount. If they are having a slow day, or it is earlier in the day, they often will honor the discount.

It is really unfortunate that the clerk didn't explain the policy of the hotel, if that indeed was their policy. It might be racism, it might be a brain-dead employee who is making 6 bucks an hour and doesn't care if he alienates a customer, black, white or green.

If I were you, I'd send a letter to the general manager of that hotel at the location and send a copy to the main headquarters also. A reputable hotel will not want to lose a customer over a crummy employee and they will probably offer a refund or a free coupon or something.

If that fails, contact the Florida Commission on Human Relations. It is a violation of the civil rights code in this state to deny someone equal access to a public facility or accomodations, so I think your situation would apply. The FCHR website has more information.

Good luck to you, and I hope you come back to Florida--we are not all back-wood idiots, and certainly the cretins posting before me in response to your original complaint do not speak for the majority.

Tom, your statements are valid but slightly misinformed.

AUTHOR: Tim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 08, 2003

To a white, non-racist, which I think you are, it's very easy to think that all this talk of "affirmative action" and "reparations" will only screw white people who had nothing to do with slavery. On the issue of college admissions: the current news on this subject is the white girl who wasn't admitted to U of M law school because they chose to admit a black person who actually had lower credentials (per UGPA and LSAT score).

Here is the reality behind this situation: law schools in general seek not only a highly intelligent student body, but also a diverse one. This contributes to the quality of everyone's education. To achieve this, U of M uses a scoring system which takes largely into consideration a person's numerical credentials, but also life experiences, especially overcoming significant obstacles. The girl who did not gain admission was a white suburban girl with a silver spoon sticking out of her mouth; conversely, most of the black students admitted to U of M Law come from inner city Detroit. Believe me, any black person from inner city Detroit who is even in the position of being able to apply to a law school has overcome significant obstacles. The goal of the University of Michigan is the betterment of the greater Detroit area through education. This is not achieved by giving one more rich white girl the opportunity to go be a lawyer for GM. It is achieved by educating lawyers who will be boons to a struggling community.

Michelle (the original poster) could not have been more right in regards to how black people are viewed in the real estate world. This is a proven FACT: when black people begin moving into a white community the property values go down (many people argue that this is because black people don't take care of their property, but this is not true at all. They are usually so happy to have gotten a house that they take extremely good care of it). When the population of black residents in a previosly all white neighborhood exceeds 8%, white people begin to move out, and no white people will buy the houses they leave behind. In an amazingly short period of time an all white neighborhood becomes an all black neighborhood (Howard Stern can tell you all about it, but his family took a stand and stuck around). Almost every black neighborhood today was at one time a white neighborhood. Realtors and landlords realize this: racism is still prevalent in our society and white people do not want to live by black people. Thus, realtors tend to direct black home buyers toward black neighborhoods, and landlords just deny leases. Although you have never experienced it and have seen evidence to the contrary, Michelle is absolutely right in showing how hard it is for black people to do the things that white people take for granted.

Now, the hotel clerk in question may have had some sort of legitimate reason for not wanting to honor the coupon, and Michelle may have prematurely cried discrimination, but can you blame her? I was lucky enough to be born white, and so were you Tom, but I know that if I faced a society full (well, not really FULL) of people who hated me for no reason I would also be apt to see discrimination at every turn.

Per reparations (here's where my ultra-liberal side shows): the idea behind all the talk of reparations was that the economic success of the U.S. is due, in large part, to the labor of slaves who were never paid for their hard work. There are companies still in existence today, like Tyco and CSX, whose initial infrastructure and products were built by slaves. The descendants of the founders of these companies still reap the benefits of their inheritances, which they did not earn. The theory behind reparations is that the social structure that was engineered to accomodate slavery still exists to a degree today, and that, to level the modern economic playing field, these companies should pay the descendents of the slaves what they should have paid the slaves in the first place. It is an issue of fairness. To achieve total fairness, we should sieze the bank accounts of all slave-money heirs and give all their cash to the UNCF to ensure that every black person that wants and is willing to get a decent education can get one. Maybe that would level the playing field a little, yank all the elitists out of their faggy little garden parties and make them toil in some dingy factory while the people who have struggled in this country educate themselves. I know I went on way too long. The long and short of it is, Tom, don't be mad at the victims of a deplorable social structure or the people who are trying to correct it. Be mad at the people who created it and the people who perpetuate it.

I dont have to. I have Black Neighbors as well as relatives. I apologize to you if you were lumped in with the whole group. But a MAJORITY of Blacks are EXACTLY as I described. I have seen it & it is on the Daily News. So until the MAJORITY of the GROUP changes, you will be lumped in with them. Also you were the one that THREATEN to SUE. This is the typical BLACK RACISIT REACTION. We need to quit worrying so much about PERCIEVED RACISIM & create TOTAL NEUTRAL standards. And if a majority of whites is the only ones that pass, it is still FAIR as it will be RACE NEUTRAL. And yes I am referring to COLLEGE ADMISSIONS.

POSTED: Tuesday, January 28, 2003

In response to the gentleman who said I was racist, if you've never walked an inch in my shoes let alone a mile you don't know what you are talking about.

When an individual looks over your shoulder into your car and sees a group of blacks and then proceeds not to honor their coupon, I believe that is discrimination, stereotyping, call it what you want. Its the same thing.

Contrary to your belief, everything that I ever obtained in this world I got from God and from the ability he gave me, as well as what my kids have obtained. I, as well as my kids were intelligent enough to make it to college without any handouts thank you very much, so that comment was unwarranted.

You just put every black in the same category. I have an aunt who is a millionaire and she did it on her "own" not off any handouts.

I tell you what, do a little experiment of your own. Let one of your black friends (if you have any) go into a predominately white neighbor hood and try to rent an apartment or even buy a luxury car and come back with the results. You do the same thing the next day, same place, same situation and see if you get the same response.

Write back and let me know what happened.

God Bless you

One of the BIG REASONS we still have so much racisim & issues with it is, because of people like you. When this person who decided to be a JERK, you immedietly decide to SUE & blame it on RACISIM. We as a country need to quit bickering over every little percived instance of UNFAIR PLAY that is done to us & blame it on our SKIN COLOR. BLACKS today have become more RACISIT themselves that they were 20 or 30 years ago. We have groups of BLACKS that want REIMBURSEMENT from the civil war. Well I dont see why they should as I dont believe any of them were alive back then. Also you want a GUARENTEED QUOTA system in College Admissions and other programs. Doesnt matter if your qualified or if someone else has better test scores or grades, you want something for nothing cause you are BLACK.

Well it is the WHITE MAN today that is being discriminated against & it needs to stop. People say that it is PAYBACK for all the years that others have been DISCRIMINATED against. Well I didnt do it, so why should I be punished. Just remember the old saying "Two wrongs dont make a right"
