I'll never forget it. I worked for a whole entire summer at a horirble telemarketing agency just so I could make the $1000 I needed to join Sutherland Models and start living my dream of becoming a model/actress. I was 18 years old, now 25. I was mislead to believe, by Lynne (who still works there now), that I had the "right look" and I would soon be doing commercials for companies such as coca-cola, nike, whatever, you name it. She told me she will sign me up for commercial modelling, and print modelling. After paying their fee of $1000 and over 2 years later, I never ONCE got an audition for either of those things. All I kept getting auditions for when I would call in to the weekly audition line was stupid hair show audtions. I don't need a modelling agent to get me HAIRSHOW AUDITIONS. I can find that s**t on f**king kijiji and craigslist. It doesn't take a modelling agent to get you these sort of jobs.
I kept in touch with others who signed up around the same time as me and were with me in that bogus "acting" class they make you take and the 5 people I kept in touch with all told me when they tried ot pursue auditions, they kept getting things like hairshows and other lame auditions that they were not expecting. Things you really don't need an agent for. We all felt like we got scammed. So warning you all, if you go out there and are told you "have the look" and they seem overly enthusiastic about you and about all your "potential" - be wary. A
It is widely known that the number one rule of modelling agencies is that if they ask you to pay for anything, they're bogus. Being so naive at 18, I unfortunately found this out the hard way. Note though,, they're obviously not completely bogus because they have a roster of real models on their website. However, it seems they only keep their promises to the models they take on that are real models - the ones that are over 5'8 tall and who are fit for runway modelling and what not. I am only 5'6 so this disqualifies me to be a real model. So anyone who isn't fit to be a real model, they'll take you on anyway, but not with any intentions of actually getting you auditions that are worth your time and money.
On another note, my agent was pretty disrespectful. I live in Vaughan and if you google it, you will see in the year 2009, Vaughan was hit by a tornado and it even blew off the roofs off of some houses. I had a small audition that day for a hairshow my agent, Dawn Bernard, had gotten me. I have to make a 2.5 hour commute from Vaughan, on the busses and subway, to downtown Toronto. I am half way there and I realised the weather was looking really bad and I didn't want to get stuck in this type of weather on the subway or bus with no way home for hours. So I called Dawn and said I can't make it because of the storm. At that point, it was just a really bad storm with thunder and all. Later on, it turned out there was a tornado headed towards Vaughan. So I got home safe and sound fortunately but Dawn was being absolutely irrational and unreasonabe about the fact that I cancelled on her for the audition. She basically expected me to risk my life for an audition. It was as if she didn't even believe me about the weather. I've never been so appalled in my life at someone's behaviour.
