My father lost his job, so he applied for Swift Transportation. He didnt have a CDL licence and therefore signed up as a student for the company. They told him that he would go to a CDL driving school and that they would train him how to operate a company truck. He was told that the tuition fees would be deducated from his paychecks when he was hired, and he was ok with that. He went down to Richmond and attended the driving school and ultimately obtained his CDL licence. He came back home for the weekend and was supposed to go meet his recruited on Monday following that weekend.

Before Monday arrived, he got a call that he was not hired by Swift, on the grounds that he was not able to "communicate well" and was not able to operate a truck. We weren't too worried, we figured that it was just a mistake or something. So on monday we visited the Lewistown terminal and met with his recruiter Ron Hensley. Ron had my dad jump through a few hoops to see if there was any credibility behind their claim. He had my dad read, write, give him the main routes to Chicago off the top of his head, and questioned him about truck safety. My father was able to answer all of those questions correctly, and was abe to perform the tasks, even Mr. Hensley could not explain why he was not hired. He said that he would try to fix it.

A month later, we still did not hear anything back and when we went to visit Ron Hensley again, and the secretary said that he was not working there anymore. We got a letter in the mail stating that my dad owed Swift $4,250 for the tuition. They did not want to hire him because he could not communicate or drive, yet he passed the driving school and was able to obtain a CDL from their very own school. How was he supposed to pay that back when he has no job. My dad now had a $4,250 debt to Swift and could not get a job with any trucking company because of it, even though he had a licence. Finally at the end of it all, my father took out his 401K pension to put a down payment for a truck and got his own truck sot hat he can start somewhere. But the worst part is that Swift took my parent tax refund as collection for the debt.

Swift is a horrible company, they have incompitant people running their corporate office. They pay their employes next to nothing, and their employes carry the fees that come with running a company. I hope Swift goes belly up and any other company that conducts their so called business in this fashion.

Swift Driving School Cost a Rip Off

AUTHOR: Erran - ()

POSTED: Friday, May 10, 2013

Swift Trans really screws over a lot of newbies with the inflated cost of driving school.  When I went through it myself, it was out of the Sparks, NV terminal and they contracted out with Desert Truck Driving School which is still in business today and does not overcharge for CDL training.   I paid $1,250.00 up front for the tution vs. financing it and that was back when it was still 3rd party testing in 2002.

As far as tuition reimbursement was concerned, I did take advantage of that sometime between '02-'04 and saw some money back.  I just would not allow myself to be on the hook for $4,000+ dollars for CDL training.  Shop around for a reasonably priced truck driving school that will teach you just enough to get your CDL and don't go through any of the major trucking company mills unless you are offered a decent tuition rate.  As far as I'm cocnerned, anying over $2,500.00 (even $2,500.00 seems high) is a possible rip off and keep in mind you will not be making much hauling general freight to begin or even get adequate miles for decent paycheck.

You are just a number to Swift.
