SynapseConnect is quite stealthy in sending their auto-renew cards. They deliberately attempt to fool the recipient into thinking that it is not anything important. Unlike legitimate businesses that clearly mark their renewal requests as "Renewal" or "Final Notice", and so on, there is nothing on the exterior of the card that indicates that it has anything to do with renewing a magazine subscription.

The renewal card that I received was a double-postcard sized mailing folded and sealed with an adhesive. The address side shows only my address and the return address. The reverse side's most prominent feature is a picture of a moving truck and the question "Moving?" and space to fill in change of address information. The other text on this side says "We guarantee a hassle-free subscription. You'll never miss an issue. No bills, publisher renewal notices and no telemarketing calls. We do the work for you by automatically extending your subscription each year for as long as you want your selections." Notice that no where does it say that you already have subscriptions with these people -- there is nothing to indicate that you have any ongoing business relationship with them. They are almost boasting about the fact that they will send you only one, misleading postcard each year!

When you open the folded card, one side is a prepaid Business Reply Mail address block. This is the front side of the "Moving?" section. People might think that they can prevent the renewal by sending in this part. Indeed, the other part has the note "Detach and return by mail", but this is only a change-of-address card.

The remaining section of the card begins "Thank you for being a valued customer. We hope you have been enjoying your service, as your complete satisfaction is our ultimate goal. (new para) For your convenience, we will continue to ensure that you don't receive extra unwanted mail -- the multiple renewal notices and bills that normally come with a subscription. For the next term of issues the credit card you previously provided for your selections will be charged for
Shame on them! What chutzpah! In my case, because of criminals operating on the internet, I've had to change my credit card number twice since the time I gave it to SynapseConnect, so they are in for a surprise when they try to charge it. Serves them right!
