On 8/2/2003, I was doing some routine shopping at my local Target store. And I wandered into a "Clearance" area for some of their outdoor items, including gas grills. There were several large signs that said "Clearance, priced as marked"

I saw a "floor model" of a grill that I was interested in. It was obviously scuffed, had a few minor missing pieces, etc. and I was hoping to get a good deal on it, however I did not see a price tag anywhere.

I then saw a customer service representative from the department. I asked her how much the grill was since I did not see a price. She pulled a flyer card off of the grill, scanned it, and said that the grill was $179. That sounded like a good deal to me, so I wanted to go ahead and buy it before someone else did, but I wouldn't be able to pick it up until later that afternoon. She checked with someone else, said that would be fine, and then helped me roll the grill to the front of the store to check out with it and pay for it.

I paid for the grill, they printed a copy of my receipt, attached it to the top of the grill, wrote my name on it, and said that they would see me later.

Later that afternoon, I arranged to borrow a friend's truck to pick up the grill. When I arrived at the store, and told them I was here to pick up my grill, the girl at the customer service counter refered me to see someone else. This lady (wearing no nametag) explained to me that after I purchased the grill, she realized that the picture on the price tag did not match the grill that I had bought. That $179 was NOT the price for the grill and that she had replaced the clearance grill that I was supposed to pick up with a different grill.

I told them that was not acceptable, that I checked with multiple employees of the store, they then sold me the grill for $179, it was MY grill and I was just here to pick it up...not some other grill.

Some guy named Kevin (who wouldn't give me his last name) came up and explained that he was the manager. He explained that the grill was actually a $500 grill (brand new in the box price) and that he wasn't going to give it to me for the $179. I said that I was sorry if his employees had made a mistake, but I had to make special arrangements to borrow a truck to pick this up, I had paid for it, I wanted MY grill.

He offered to sell me the grill (that I had already purchased) for 20% off of the $500 price. I declined, as I had already purchased the grill, and asked if I had taken the grill with me at the time of purchase, would he have come to my house to either reposses the grill, or to try to charge me more for it? He said that they would not do that. I then asked if since I already purchased this grill and it was rightfully mine, perhaps I should just take it out of the store with me regardless of what he said. At this point he called a Target "rent-a-cop" security guy over...it was quite unprofessional.

I ended the encounter by telling Kevin to have the store general manager call me to resolve the issue. Either Kevin decided it wasn't important enough to bother with the general manager, or the general manager decided that I wasn't important enough to deal with, but either way no one has gotten in touch with me, and the issue is unresolved.

As it stands, Target has my money ($179+tax), they have the grill that I rightfully purchased, and they inconvenienced both me and my friend by making me borrow a vehicle which would end up being worthless.

#6 Consumer Suggestion

Well said. Kent

AUTHOR: April - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 08, 2003

Well said Kent. As for Carlee, please!!! First off, I purchased a TV two weeks ago from Walmart, to which it would not fit into my car and they held it up front for me. Second, I managed in a large retail store for years and also worked consumer protection for a period of time, for the same store. Consumer protection can interfer into whatever is going, rather it be with threats, theft or a simple arguement, so lay off the BS. I guess you've never heard of the customer is always right? When it comes to the price difference, Target displays on the back of their circulars that the price will ALWAYS be corrected in favor of the consumer.

As for the consumer going to jail for being right, what panet do you live on? My husband has recently been employed as a REAL police officer. In this case, the customer would be able to leave with the product to which was already purchased and paid in full. And lets no forget a mangaer having to key in the proper information on the product, Bull, My mother purchased several products that were not ringing up the proper price and a manager was not called over, and did not need to be called over, the cashier changed the prices herself, as this has happened numerous times. So, get your facts straight before placing your foot into your mouth.

Personally, I was shopping at Target once to twice a week until lately. Remember the TV I mentioned above, well, the next day this TV was in the paper for $50 cheaper. When I went to the customer service to get the differnce, I'm told that the sale price listed was a "Mark-down" price, therefor I could not get the difference. Yet, nowhere did it say, "Make-Down" and not "Sale." After asking for the store manager, I waiting more than 30 minutes before she decided to grace me with her presence. Then she literally stood in my face laughing and said she wouldn't do anything. I wrote an email to the main office, to no avail and this has now been one week. So, the thousands upons thousands I spend at Target, especially at Christmas, will be spent elsewhere.

Wrong there is another course of action to take

AUTHOR: Kent - (U.S.A.)

First off to the head Protection Specialist
don't flatter yourself a sanitation engineer, is still just a Garbage man you are wrong via your statement (The only course of action to take in this situation is to file complaints with the President of the Company and the Better Business Bureau.)

there is another course of action that can be taken Ryan tell everyone you know about this keep posting to different boards, hand out flyers, hang it from a sign on the side of your house, get Gepheart. your comments have stopped me from ever shopping at Target and I have friends who will follow by example. Contributing factors thanks to Carlee, acting as if Target is doing us a favor of letting people be guests in there store, the public are not guest's! we are the contributing factor of whether that store stays open if you get a pay check, Guest! No I don't think so.but I get the point feel free to shop at target get ripped off complain about it and you go to jail! There are to many different stores offering the same products for a better price to put up with this kind of treatment. And carlee its easier to respond if you take your foot out of your mouth before you respond!

Poor Suggestions

AUTHOR: Carlee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 05, 2003

I would just like to point out a couple things about this story that are completely wrong. You see I worked for this company as both a Sales Floor Team Member and as the Supervisor for the "Rent-A-Cops" as you like to refer to them.

The first problem with this is that it is against Target Policy to allow a Guest to buy an item and leave the store without it. We (At least in my area)were quite adament about the fact that once you bought it you must take it with you. Another problem with this is that in order for the item to be rung up at the cash register someone would have had to have gotten the numbers from a Sales Floor Team Member and then had a Cash Supervisor enter the numbers for an over-ride. So obviously someone dropped the ball somewhere and I can see how you may have been treated shabbily and you didn't deserve this but one must always remember that lovely little phrase "Buyer Beware".

April,
Your suggestions regarding the "Rent-A-Cop" to give the author hell and have him call the cops was completely misguided and wrong. In order for the Target Protection Specialist to even approach a Guest it must be at the order of a Manager and the only time that would be neccessary would be if the customer was threatening an employee. Secondly the cops would not be able to make the call about the Guest leaving with the merchandise. It is his word against a store that called in a complaint about a person who is acting in a threatening manner. How do I know? I have dealt with this a thousand times and can assure you that the Cops never once sided with the Guest. I have also seen Guests hauled away in the back of a Police Cruiser for casuing this kind of disruption. You also have to ask yourself is it worth it to go to jail over a grill?

The only course of action to take in this situation is to file complaints with the President of the Company and the Better Business Bureau.

What to do

AUTHOR: April - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 03, 2003

I am sorry you had to go through this experience. As it is, you have made the purchase and it is not a customer error, but their stores. They have NO choice but to give you the grill in which you purchased.

Go to www.target.com and file a complaint on this store. If you have your recite handy, give them the information on the recite, even include the time and date. They can pull this info up from their main computer. Next, go back to the store, let the "rent-a-cop" give you hell, then tell them to call the local police department. When they come out and you explain the situation to them, and that you have already purchased this item but are not allowed to take it. Instead they want to change the price, the officer will have no other alturnative but to make Target give you this item. In fact, tell the "rent-a-cop" you wil have the local police show up if they resist.

You see, the purchase was made, as with any item from anyone, rather a car to toy, if you made the purchase, it is against the law for them to hold it and demand more money after the purchase. They made it seem that you were in a "stuck" possition, that is not the case, they DON'T have a choice.

When you make your complaint online, make sure you tell them that if they resist you leaving with your purchase again, you WILL call the local police. I don't think Target will want that PR, being the police department will see to it that this is placed in your local newspaper, and word spreads very fast. If it comes down to you needing assistance from the officer, this "Kevin" will be fired, no doubt.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
