Within the tax relief industry, where scam is the term to describe business as usual, Tax Defense Network is one that's not a scam. The fact is organizations like TDN are up against frauds in their own field. In general I totally agree with the Federal Trade Commission's criticism, which dubs most tax relief companies frauds and scams. Once I discovered I was in tax debt I was more concerned about getting scammed then the IRS taking my money.

I discovered Tax Defense Network after reading a few of the IRS Hitman articles on the internet. I immediately looked up TDN's BBB rating. It was an A rating (like finding gold on the beach). After speaking with a TDN consultant I immediately noticed a difference between Tax Defense Network and the frauds of the tax relief industry. The first clue TDN wasn't a scam was when the consultant talked to me in detail about my problem, and didn't even refer to fees. He ended the conversation by discussing my various options. Yet, I wasn't 100 % positive TDN wasn't a scam. Second clue Tax Defense Network weren't frauds was when I asked about an offer in compromise, which I presume is really a scam anyway. He told me the reason TDN doesn't mainly focus OICs, "Because we know only a small percentage of people will actually end up with an OIC, and could be seen as fraudulent to suggest otherwise."

Inside a sea of frauds, how do you hunt for a reputable tax relief company like Tax Defense Network?

I started by searching the internet for suggestions and things to look out for when selecting an organization in the fraudulent tax debt area. I talked to co-workers and friends, and discovered a lot of people said to evaluate the Better Business Bureau ratings for every company I considered. So, in an attempt not to get my hard earned cash taken from me (as a result of IRS or even in a scam), I said I wouldn't hire a company without at a B rating. Anything lower than a B, I wrote-off as frauds.

When researching a tax debt relief organization, even good ones like Tax Defense Network, use the one that gives honest answers to your questions and doesn't possess a fraudulent record. That's the reason why I went with TDN over other companies that are frauds, and so pleased I did. Tax Defense Network cleared up my tax problem almost immediately, got me inexpensive payments, and tax debt free.

I worked for Tax Defense Network for a while, I am no longer employed there. Please feel free to email me at giveherringajob@gmail.com with any questions that you may have about the company. I cannot assist you with tax problems, but if you are interested in the perspective of a prior employee I would be happy to discuss.

You have some great questions. I know that I had the same concerns you did, but if you visit the TDN website (here's the link: http://www.taxdefensenetwork.com/team.htm) they have their attorney's and Tax Attorney and Enrolled Agent profile and qualifications listed.

Also, you mentioned that you would pay TDN an hourly rate, but actually you do not. I paid a flat fee of $1950 (in payments) as they worked on my tax case. As far as if your problem can be easily solved, well you should research that then before hiring anyone.

I tried to talk with the IRS, but the agent I spoke with was completley ruide and didn't understand I didn't have the money to pay the debt in full. I will say though, before anything, do not give the IRS any financial information because then no one can really negotiate (TDN or anyone) with the IRS because they have the forms in front of them now.

I can't personally assure you of anything but only tell you my experience. I don't think identity theft is something to worry about, since, as you mentioned, their attorneys, cpas, enrolled agents and the business in general could lose their licenses.

At the end it is what you think you are capable of doing and how well you at getting through to the IRS and negotiating with them . Theperson I talked to wasn't at all trying to work with me, and I had a lot going on at the time so it made sense for me to get someone to handle my tax debt for me. But you are right, if your tax problem is simple enough, I say do it yourself.

But I say that to say this, if you find yourself wanting to get into a settlement, buried under paperwork you do not understand, or find that the IRS is wanting way more than you can afford (it happens alot) then you may need to call someone, and all I am saying these people at TDN are the one's I reccommend.

I hope this answers your questions, and sorry I took so long to reply.

Stephen Fred, I have a few questions for you about TDN.  I don't now anything about TDN - these are my concerns and the related questions:

If I had a tax problem I would sure want to talk with someone who really knows what they are talking about.  A licensed tax attorney had to go to college and law school, then go through a background check and pass the bar exam.  A CPA had to go to college and graduate school, then go through a background check and pass the CPA exam.  If either a CPA or an attorney has a specialty in tax - I can be pretty sure that they know their stuff and are the right people to help me.  The question is - If I go to TDN and speak with someone how do I know that person is qualified to help me?  Do they require the people they hire to have a college education in some area related to law or accounting/finance?  Is this person a CPA or an Attorney? If not how can I trust them to be correct?

If I go to a CPA or a Tax Attorney I pretty much know that I'm going to end up paying $300/hr at least.  But, they will probably provide me a detailed bill showing exactly what they did and how long it took. If I go to TDN, will I pay an hourly rate and get a detailed bill or will I just pay a flat fee with the agreement that they will do their best to help solve my problem?  It occcurs to me that if there is nothing that can be done for me other than just pay the IRS, a CPA or Tax Attorney would tell me this once it became obvious - probably in the beginning before running up a huge bill.  What if my problem can be solved by filling out some simple form and sending it to the IRS?  If TDN wants a flat fee, will they refund most of it if the problem is easily solved?  How will I know if the problem was easily solved?  Will they give me a detailed invoice?

I know that there are cases of CPAs and Tax Attorneys doing things that are unethical, but at the end of the day one thing I can be pretty sure of is that no CPA or Tax Attorney is going to flat out steal from me - afterall if they were to lose their licenses they would lose much more than they could ever gain from me, in terms of both future pay and time spent in the past to earn those credentials.  I also know that a CPA or Tax Attorney is state lisenced, and the state ensures that at a minimum they have never been convicted of a felony.  I like this because I'm giving the person who helps me enough information to steal my identity and possibly drain my accounts.  Both CPAs and Attorneys would be required to maintain my information securely.  How do you ensure that the person that I would be working with at TDN is not going to steal from me, and how do I know they will protect my information in the future?

I think that for most individuals with tax problems the real "problem" is that they owe money and can't pay it.  When that is the case getting professional help is like calling your mechanic to put gas in your car.  I'm sure he will help you if you pay him, but he really can't do much that you couldn't do yourself.  If I owed the IRS money that I couldn't pay, could a CPA, a Tax Attorney, or TDN do anything fo me that I couldn't do myself?  It seems to me that I could call the IRS and explain my situation and ask what my options are if the problem is just that I can't pay what I owe.  If I have to send in some form they can tell me the form number and I can print it from www.irs.gov

Education for "Stephen Fred", and response

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 17, 2011

Stephen,

The first clue that any idiot could figure out is that the name of the site is RIP OFF REPORT.
So, why would you think this is some rants and raves board?
Because you are just stupid, or a company shill.

As far as the BBB goes, you have to be a total moron to use the BBB for determining if a business is a scam or not.

Did you know that the BBB is a FOR PROFIT business?
Did you know that the ONLY profit center for the BBB is "membership fees"?
Did you know that you will only get a "positive" rating if you pay into this extortion scam?
Did you know that anyone who doesn't join will never get a "positive" rating?

The BBB is totally obsolete in todays internet world. It was a marginally viable entity in the pre-internet society, but today serves no purpose at all to the general public.

People often think that the BBB is a consumer protection organization, or a governement agency. They are not.

The BBB is a very corrupt and useless organization. Obsolete, and soon to be extinct.

Get some education before spouting jibberish.

"Stephen Fred" wrote the following jibberish:

To make everything clear, I am not, nor have I ever been an employee at TDN.  I was a client with them from Oct-Dec 2010 and wanted to share my experiences with others who are in tax trouble. I saw this site and wrote my post not knowing this site was for complaints only. Usually complaint sites allow you to write compliments as well as complaints, so I did. I will have to strongly disagree with you Steve, as far as BBB ratings go. I think "only an idiot" would completely disregard them, especially in the tax relief market where most companies have "D" and "F" ratings. This isn't the only thing to look at when choosing a company to represent you but it is a good start. The reason why I filled all TDN's information is because there was an option to do it, so I assumed it was required. I went on their website and found their address and phone number under the "Contact Us" page, which anyone can do on any site. And why wouldn't you want to put all the information, especially if you are making a complaint? That makes no sense to me. That brings up an interesting point, TheTruthHurts76, seems this isn't your first time commenting on a TDN post. How do I know that? Well, feeling embarrassed about my botched compliment (since I made Steve want to puke with my BBB rating reference), I wanted to check out what the other TDN reviews were. There I saw a comment from you. It seems as if you "Google" Tax Defense Network a lot, which makes me suspicious of your intentions and background. I don't know much about complaint or compliment sites, and obviously this is for only complaints, but I just wanted to write a compliment because TDN did a lot for me, and wrote it on the wrong site. Sorry if I disturbed the angry cathartic bonding that goes on here with my chipper review, but don't doubt my intentions when yours are shady. I tried to have my post deleted but no one ever got back to me. I tried, but I am not bending over backwards to take down a nice post about a company I like. If you don't like them so much write your own review or STFU!

The BBB reference did it for me!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 05, 2011

Yeah, this is an underhanded attempt by a company shill to do some free advertising here. After all, there was no rip off, so why post on ROR if no rip off?

I really wanted to puke when I saw the BBB reference. Only an idiot would even care about a BBB "rating", but then to go on and elaborate further by the little statement that the BBB A Rating "was like finding gold on the beach". Gag! Puke! I mean how overly obvious could this company shill be?

This kind of "promotion" is getting more common here as the economy gets worse. Companies are getting desperate, especially the "shady" ones like this. I wonder why! If this is an example of TDN's ethics, I would steer clear.

Rip Off Report should go after these creepy companies and nail them for an advertising fee, or expose the IP address of the poster as a company IP address for TDN.

Lowlife scumbags.

Question for TDN

AUTHOR: TheTruthHurts76 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 05, 2011

How many reputable companies have to go on "Consumer boards" and defend their company. Not many, because they are confident in their product and could care less about boards like this. This post is obviously from TDN, look at the detailed company information at the top of the post and why would an individual come here to brag about their experience, especially since this is a complaint board. Why would a reputable trustworthy company need to do this? So I ask why TDN?
