Telecheck embarrassed us at our favorite store. We went grocery shopping at the same Walmart in California we have been going to for years and used checks almost 95% of the time. We almost always have the same dollar amount due when we check out plus or minus $50. The cashier told us it was denied and gave us the number to call, we called Telecheck and they told us we weren't writing enough checks to have a good history when 2 months before they told us we were writing to many checks and when we call their bluff, all they can do is read the speech out of the textbook, word for word,  and say sorry you'll just have to take your chances anytime you write a check on whether or not it will be approved, I mean they literally say that, you'll just have to take your chances. It's Christmas time, who doesn't write at least 1 check at Christmas time.

Sort of right

Robert you are sort of right, it is not exactly a ripoff, but I am not stupid, I know what Telecheck is and what they do. My complaint is the fact that the company out of now where starts declining my checks and everytime I call them I get a different answer on why they did it, no check history, when I've been writing checks for over 30 years, to many checks written, not enough checks written and my favorite on is " I don't know why that happened our system says you're fine", then they literally say good luck, hope the next one is approved. They can't answer any questions I ask, and they read their replies right out of the manual word for word. What kind of company is that?   And it is embarrassing when standing in line at the store with people watching and listening to everything going on and they tell you that you your check is declined even though there is plenty of money available and you have to figure out what to do, not everyone uses credit cards and some debit cards have daily limits. So before you respond to someones complaint and belittle someone for using checks, know their situation otherwise you just sound like a jerk.

Telecheck is a Check Guarantee company, that is they are guaranteeing Walmart(or what ever store) uses them that if a chcek comes back as bad they will pay the retailer.  As such they have their own guidelines as to what checks they will and will not approve.   They are not really going to give their guidelines because if they did then people who are trying to scam them would try to "play" the system.

The only embarassment you think is in your mind.  People are not pointing and laughing at you in line.  It is unlikely that unless YOU are making a big scene that anyone even noticed, or if they did they are not going to remember you more than 2 minutes after you leave.

Every bank and Credit Union have issued a Debit Card with their checking accounts for many years.  So there is an easy solution, take out your debit card and use that.  The only difference is that unlike a check, a Debit Card gets immediate approval and checks if you have enough available in your account.  So the ONLY reason to write a check is if you don't have enough available in your account at the time and are trying to "float" the funds for a couple of days until the check clears.

Now, this is exactly why retailers are not willing to accept checks as redily as they have in the past.  Because of the way checks are processed they can be processed as soon as the same day, where because people "think" they have a couple of days it ends up having the check bounce and then they need to be "chased" down to pay the bad check.

Oh and if you go off on the "Checks are Safer" you are very wrong.  What does a check have on it?  It has your Name, Address, real account number, and your signature.  This is more than enough for any average Identity Theief to create a fake check off of that information and wipe out your acccount.  Not only that but even just at the store level it is "touched" by at least 2-3 people who would have the opportunity to use this information.

Now, what does a Debit Card have?  It has a random 16 digit number with just your name.  The card is swipped and entered into a system not even touched by anyone.  Not only that but many banks offer a "0 Liability" on the Debit Cards that they don't offer on Checks.  But then you say..well what about "hackers".  Well do you really think that the check you wrote isn't also scanned?  As soon as your check is entered into the system the information is stored just like a credit card.

It's Christmas time, who doesn't write at least 1 check at Christmas time

 - Actually people who use checks for retail purposes is very small.  With the use of the Debit Card, and many people don't even have "traditional" accounts where the bank no longer even issues paper checks.  If you went to your favoriate big box store and asked 100 people..don't be shocked if more than 90 say they don't even have their checkbook on them.

In fact so few people write checks that many retailers don't even accept checks anymore.  I know of 2 right off of the top of my head that don't accept checks anymore.
