Buyer BEWARE!!!!

I recently purchased one of those "offers", from the Dish Network, while shopping in my local Sears. I paid $49.95 and I was led to believe that it would entitle me to 4 satellite recievers, installed free, with a dish. I paid Sears the $49.95 and was given a card with an 800 number on it to "activate" the system and get my free installation. I was interested in the $99.00 upgrade to get a PVR on one of the recievers.

When I called, I gave the woman all the info she asked for, including my social security number (I should know better). I told her that I wanted he $99.00 upgrade for the PVR. She then informed me that I "did not qualfy for this special offer". I was a little taken back. I asked her what she meant and she told me that "not just anyone can get this special deal". I told her that was not explained to me at Sears, and that I had already paid $49.95. She told me to take it bak to Sears for my money back.

I was stunned. I asked again what the problem was and then she FINALLY told me that she had run a credit check on me and it came back as a "medium risk". Having just purchased a house two weeks ago, that didn't surprise me and I already had many credit inquiries when I was applying for a mortgage. I shopped arround.

I asked to speak to her supervisor, and she put me on hold. She came back, about 15 minutes later, and told me that her supervisor said I qualified for a $499.00 deal. I asked her if that was on top of the $49.95, and she said yes, and that I would also have to pay for installation. I hung up, called Direct TV, got a great deal, no hassle, and I'm real happy.

Why did I send in this story? Hopefully, to save other people the bother. Call Direct TV first. I wish I had.

From a customer's standpoint

I agree with everything the previous poster said. I was in exactly the same position as the first consumer....just bought a house, so my credit score had dropped a bit. I did not qualify for Dish Network's "best" deal but the local installer worked to find a deal that, in the end, was even better for me. I ended up getting more channels and better equipment for about the same amount of money. Here's the kicker: A few months later, I bought a new VCR and could not figure out how to hook it up. I called and asked for advice and HE CAME OUT AND HOOKED IT UP FOR ME ...NO CHARGE!

Always work with a local installer, not a big box retailer. You have access to the same deals (and sometimes more) and far better service than you could ever get from a Wal-Mart or Circuit City.

DISH NetWork did not lie to you or rip you off

Like all the of the posts I have read here you are confusing a less-than-competent or less-than-ethical retailer with DISH NetWork.

Every complaint I have read here concerning DISH NetWork comes from someone who dealt with a spammer/internet site, telemarketer/mail-order company or mass-merchandiser like Sears, CostCo or WallMart.

I am a professional local independent retailer who provides DISH NetWork and DirecTV systems and service among other things. Like many other experienced local pros I take pride in explaining and demonstrating everything to potential customers in advance and making sure they get the equipment and promotion that is right for them. Then we do the installation the right way and provide service and tech support when needed for our customers down the road.

Had you, Stephan, gone to a professional local independent retailer you would have been informed that the Digital Home Plan is a promotion for customers who prefer to lease the equipment rather than buy it.

Up to 4 receivers can be installed for $49.99 and one of them can be upgraded to the PVR for an additional $50 (not $99). But because DISH NW is putting all the equipment (at a subsidized wholesale value of up to $850 + cables, connectors, accessories, etc.) and paying for the installation they are naturally interested in insuring that they have a credit worthy customer who is likely to pay his bills for at least the 12mo commitment and not churn and/or steal the merchandice. So a credit card is required and a cursory credit check is done. For those that don't pass the credit check an alternative is available wherein they can pay $300 towards the 2nd year of programming in advance which will be "paid back" to them in $25 credits on their bill for months 13-24.

For those who don't have or want to use a credit card there are other promotions wherein they are paid back for buying the equipment for an additional discount on top of the already subsidized price and still get a free professional installation.

The real question is why anyone would choose to buy or obtain something as important and technical as a digital satellite TV system (or home entertainment system or computer system or whatever) by mass-merchandiser or mail-order when they could obtain it from a full-service local retailer? Surely you realize that when dealing with clerks in CE stores or telephone agents you are foregoing the expertice & service available from a local independent pro. And you forego the right to complain and/or expect free support & service from the local pro later. (Yes, we get lot's of calls from customers who got their systems elsewhere who expect us to take care of them for free or a pittance when they have a problem.)

In the case of satellite TV systems you get the same deal or better WITH the expertice & service from the local pro to boot.

How do you find one? Get referrals from friends, neighbors & relatives or ask the rep at the company's 800# specifically to refer you to some or use the dealer locator on the company websites or http://dumpcable.com .

People who deal with this type of retailer enjoy the advantages of satellite TV for years and don't feel "ripped off." That's why millions of new customers get off cable & come to satellite TV every year.
