On Sunday, April 13, 2003, My wife and I visited your store, # 6647, at around 2:30 PM.

We went to the Garden department looking for plants and good deals.

We saw a shelves of ground covers flats with a sign that read, "Ground Covers $2.37. Being such a good deal I wanted to purchase them. They rung up at $12.00 each.

The cashioer called for a manager to check for the right price. A person named Steve arrived. I showed him the shelves. In a rude and firm voice he said, "Nothing here is $2.37."

I suggested that the sign should be removed since it confuses customers. Steve said, as he was rearrenging the flats, "You're just an idiot."

I asked Steve to call the manager. Steve turned to an employee named Erick and told him, "This idiot wants a manager. As I waited for a manager, Steve again addressed Erick and asked, "Have you call Paulo for this idiot? I walked away to find the manager, as my wife waited for me, Steve went on to call me an idiot twice again.

I found the manager named Paulo, explained the situation. He asked me to put it in writing.
My wife put back all the other plants, totalling $ 120.00 and we left to take our busines to a competitor.

I do not understand why I was treated this way. I feel that Steve should be retrained on how to talk to customers. Someone should check shelves to make sure items are properly priced.

Brett your not to bright yourself

AUTHOR: Kraze - (U.S.A.)

Brett you really are not that bright are you, an employee always represents the company whom they are employed with. If the above story is true, and yes obviously two sides to every story as well as chance that lots of exageration...
so with this employee calling any name to any customer he did represent the company and therfore is RESPONSIBLE! look at the thread on here about how several products was ordered and never shipped and people say the vendor is to blame, or the contractor did crappy work, yeah they may be the cause, but the store who sold it is at fault. You sell a product or service you are at fault. Now im not 100% sure as Im just guessing that if walmart sells a product and it has a recall or causes damage they can be held responsible? even though they didnt' manufacuture it they did sell it..maybe someone can give light on this?
I run a construction company in missouri region and let me tell you what I tell every person that works for me that they represent my company, and and positives or negatives will reflect on their future with my company. If one of my people break a window, I replace it. If they smoke inside the customers house I will hear about it, and believe me I do. If I have any subcontractors do any work, I am responsible for them. I have had people that I have done work for just call me up and say that they seen one of my workers doing this, or driving one of my vehicles down the road. I always thank them...And i always let my people know they are being monitored by everyone they least expect.
They wear my company tshirt getting groceries they are representing my company whether working or not. If they go and get in a fight with my shirt on they are representing my company. That puts a big impression on my company and what kind of reputation and investment I have in my people. I don't care if they are not on my timeclock, if they misrepresent my company on my time or their own time by company shirt or company vehicle they will be put on probation or terminated at will. Secret is all about the documentation.

2 Sides to EVERY story

AUTHOR: Judd - (U.S.A.)

I'd sure like to hear STEVE'S side of this story- it is SURE to be QUITE different from the man complaining against him. I would guess that the customer was actually quite abusive towards Steve for him to respond so rudely, and hey- we're only human. If someone abuses you for something trivial (which SOME customers take GREAT pleasure in) they DESERVE to get a rude response in return.

It's also possible he never used the word "idiot" at all... I was once cashiering an order for an elderly gentleman at a furniture store when he growled at me: "Why are you charging me tax on that order?!". I replied: "We DON'T, the state and city do." He said: "Your radio ad said that this weekend you weren't charging sales tax!!" We had no such promotion going on at that time which I assured him of and I calmly suggested that possibly he had heard an ad from another furniture store offering that and had mixed us up. He yelled: "YOU'RE CALLING ME A LIAR!!!" This was in front of a large number of other waiting customers, and to make the scene even MORE embarrassing he turned to them and yelled: "Didn't you all hear all their ads about no sales tax this weekend?!!". They all assured him they hadn't, but he stormed off anyway. His salesman found him leaving and calmed him down enough to bring him back to the counter to process his order. I began ringing him up again and he growled: "I KNOW you guys ran that ad, and I don't appreciate getting ripped off like that." I said calmly (though now I was angry, too): "Sir, you are mistaken." He yelled at the top of his lungs: "YOU'RE CALLING ME A LIAR AGAIN!!! CANCEL THAT ORDER!!!" I ripped it up in his face.

Now notice, at NO time did I call that man a liar, (being mistaken does not make someone a liar) but I can assure you he told everyone he knew that I DID and by now has embellished the story so often with retelling that he has convinced HIMSELF that I called him a liar MULTIPLE times, and would have filed a report on this web-site against me and my company if it had existed in those days. Maybe he's even the same guy who filed the report I'm responding to. C'mon, do you really believe an employee at a retail store would just start calling someone an idiot over and over again just for making a constructive suggestion? Sorry, guys, the customer is NOT always right and just because someone IS a customer does not give them the right to be rude and abusive towards service employees!!!

#3 UPDATE Employee

This is not normal

AUTHOR: Phil - (U.S.A.)

I have been working for HomeDepot for over 5 years, and i have seen some associates be rude to customers. At the 2 stores I have worked at, that associate would have been fired on the spot.Im not a manager but I would have grabed "steve" and taken him to the office my self.I would never let any of my fellow associates talk to any one that way.I have been told to f-off by a customer aand still smiled and told him to have a nice day. Most likely "Steve" dosen't have a job any more.I applogize for his actions and agree with the guy who said Home Depot didn't call you an idot, Steve did.Steve is the BIG IDOT!...

Looks like he did put it in writing.

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

From the original post, it does look like this was copied and pasted from a letter Diego wrote to the Store Manager Paulo Gibson. This post is so old, Diego probably does not even monitor it anymore. Otherwise, he probably would have responded to Brett in Warwick, RI (I know I sure would have).

And speaking of Brett, an employee is a representative of the company they work for, no matter what company that is. So, if the employee called him an idiot, then yes, Home Depot called him an idiot.

If this had happened to me, you could be damned sure I would have taken it a lot higher up than just the Store Manager. I would have made sure that this employee was dealt with properly.

#5 UPDATE Employee

Why didn't you put it in writing?

AUTHOR: Jackie - (U.S.A.)

Why didn't you just put it in writing? If you think about it, that's when the employee would probably get written up or possibly fired. I know in my store, he would have been fired right there. I apologize for that store, because they obviously have issues that need to be worked out.

Just to clue you in though, everything at Home Depot has a report to go along with it. They are dedicated to some paperwork! Next time, just fill it out and then you're done and likely, the employee will be too.

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

Find this hard to believe but if this did happen and I have no reason to doubt it didn't, I would contact the district manager for some type of satisfaction. I'd also file a complaint with the corp. office. Don't know where the rebuttal guy gets off. The employee has issues and shouldn't be working with the public. He should be terminated. An employee is a direct representative of a store. The manager needs some retraining. I've always had very good service at HD, so this is an extremely rare case.

Home Depot Didn't call you an Idiot

AUTHOR: Brett - (U.S.A.)

Obviously you are an idiot...taking what an employee says to you personally can NOT be taken as what an entire company says about you.

Before you start trying to say Home Depot this Home Depot that...why don't you think about what was said and WHO said it idiot
