Reader's Digest sent a box which states on the outside " you have been sent a Free Gift plus a new customer bonus gift! -- SEE INSIDE -- ".  The problem is I did not ask to be a "New Customer" of Reader's Digest.  I did not order any reading material.  I opened the box to see if there was correspondence with a phone number inside so I could call and advise I was returning the items.  No correspondence was inside box

The address on the box read, "The Reader's Digest Association, Inc., 7501 Winstead Drive, Louisville, KY 40281."  Being suspicious of their "Free Gift", I held the item in it's original box just in case I was billed for it.  The next week,  the BILL arrived for me to pay for the item I did not order before July 28, 2010.  The new address read "Reader's Digest, Payment Processing Center, P.O. Box 80010, Prescott, AZ 86304-8010".  I called 411 to get the number to the business in Prescott, AZ and was told there is "No listing" for Reader's Digest in that City and State.

I find it hard to believe that a Company like Reader's Digest do not have a phone or email address where customers can reach them.  I have no intentions on paying for this non-ordered item, and do not want bad credit ratings because of it.  I will mail it back to them once they contact me with a return label and instructions where to mail it.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

It's a gift.

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

The FTC is very specific about receiving unsolicited/unordered merchandise-it's a gift to you.

You do NOT have to return the items and they cannot lawfully bill you for it.  I suggest you send them a certified, return receipt requested letter that states that you consider this to be a gift per the FTC rules and that you will not be returning the items and you will not pay for what you didn't order.

Make it clear in your letter that this item should not be reported to any credit reporting agency or turned over to collections and that if it is you will consider this a deliberate violation of the FTC rules and the Fair Credit Reporting Act and you will take appropriate action.

I similar situation happened to me over 12 years ago with Readers Digest.  I received some free books (3.)  I had NO dealings with RD prior to receiving the items.  I called the number on the bill (that arrived 3 weeks after the books) and made it clear that I wasn't paying.  The rep at the time told me I had to return them (at my expense) or pay.

I wrote them a letter and that was the last I heard about it.  I'm surprised that RD is STILL behaving this way.  You would think they would learn, but I supposed enough folks feel guilty and pay up.

I wouldn't and you shouldn't either.
