UnumProvident is currently the largest provider of Long Term Disability Insurance in the United States and the United Kingdom. It sells insurance policies which promise "Financial Security" in the event of serious illness, accidental injury or disability but God help you if you ever need to make a claim as it would certainly appear UnumProvident has NO INTENTION of honoring the insurance promises they sell!

YOU or YOUR BUSINESS CANNOT TRUST UnumProvident with this very important insurance coverage it sells to individuals and companies [Group Schemes].

As a business, its TRACK RECORD is TOTALLY APPALLING and despite millions of dollars in fines imposed for cheating its customers and also, just last week, for deceptive business practices; it continues to let genuine "Customers" down by unfairly terminating their long term disability benefits; saving itself millions of dollars in the process.

In the US 300,000 known unfair denied claims were court ordered to be re-assessed, as a result of a multi state Government Investigation. UnumProvident was referred to as an "outlawed Company" by Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi in the State of California.

This will now be a very serious issue for Steve Poizner to make a call on. This frightening number of people does not include thousands of other people awaiting court dates for 5, 6, 7+ years ? long, very hard years with no income!

Imagine that for just a few seconds ? How would you and your family cope?

Or indeed the thousands of unknowns who have been deceived by Genex Services [a wholly owned subsidiary of UnumProvident] a firm of lawyers who will negotiate ?a fair settlement? on behalf of the unfairly terminated "Customer" paying only a fraction [in some cases just 5%] of what was actually due to them. How low can you go in the name of making money?

It would appear the multi million dollar fines have achieved absolutely nothing to deter UnumProvident from continuing to unfairly drop "customers" forcing them to lose everything they had worked very hard for and by doing so UnumProvident is still successfully managing to shift its own financial responsibility to its ?Customers? on to the state/taxpayer.

I really hope you agree this continued criminal behavior is despicable.

Evidence of UnumProvident doing exactly the same thing to Customers in the United Kingdom goes back as far as December 1999! Please refer to Parliament Inquiry London

PLEASE WARN ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE YOU KNOW, as I'm very sure NO ONE wants to be let down like this, especially when you genuinely need the ?financial security? you truly believed you had purchased!

As you may have guessed by now, I've also been unfairly dumped by UnumProvident. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT! And believe me, it really could if you still have your insurance coverage with UnumProvident.

Using UnumProvident's most recent data please have a serious look at this. Misfortune does actually happen?don't be caught short holding the wrong policy.

I only wish someone had warned me before it was too late.

Hi, my name is Sonja, & Im with the disability rights group from Sokolove Law.  We have been reviewing thousands of potential claims where insurance companies refuse long-term disability benefits to someone who has a legitimate claim. Too often, legitimate claims are denied because insurance companies look for every possible legal and technical angle available that will allow them to deny a valid claim. When an insurer does not live up to its end of the contract, they act on what is called bad faith.

Many thanks for your comments and suggestions. They really just emphasize how very wrong this whole current situation actually is. Should you or anyone else wish to help change this dreadful state of affairs please watch this video, which contains very important information at the end.


CRITICALLY IMPORTANT if your organization has signed an ERISA Disclosure when purchasing a Group Long/Short Term Disability Policy and/or Income Protection Insurance, then this strips away ALL the rights under the unfair claims practices laws and indeed the insurance regulations of your own State.

The ERISA Clause which preempts [eliminates] State Law needs to be urgently abolished to deter unscrupulous insurance companies from committing fraud and seriously abusing its selected innocent Long Term Disability "customers" its "Chosen Ones" just to boost its profit.

Too many people have suffered this unfair fate already!
This is a huge social disgrace.

I agree with many of your comments. My position in Disability Claims is to deny, delay, minimize, and obfuscate claims. The merits or facts of the claim are not the most important factors in claims settlement. Look carefully at your contract and ask any attorney about the laws of insurance. As far as I know, there is no federal law which states that insurance companies must pay "any" claim. In addtion, I know of no state law which actually requires that insurance companies pay claims. Deference is always made to the "civil" nature of claims. That is, the legal burden is always placed on the policyholder or claimant to resolve the claim. This places insurers in the legal position of "defending" the claim. This is a legal process where the insurers point of view on interpreting the claim (which they wrote) will counter any benefits claim made by a claimant. I don't feel guilty about this since this is what insurance comnpanies do. As a customer/policyholder of the insurance company, you are automatically treated as an adversary since you are a potential claimant. In tort claims, the insurer only has to defend the claim "to the policy limits". Most people don't realize that their auto liability policies will not insure against a serious injury or death to another. Hospitals can easily cost thousands per day on uncontested claims. The $200-300k policy limits of most auto insurers is a very low policy limit. If you are found at fault in an auto accident resulting in serious injury or death you could easily lose your house, savings, future earnings.

Resolution: 1) As prudent insurance consumers we need to pass federal regulations that requires insurers to work honestly and fairly and pay legitimate claims 2) We need to have serious civil penalties for non-payment, delays, minimizing payments of legitimate claims. 3) we must break up the insurance monopolies in each state. The business of insurance is the ONLY business not regulated by the federal governement. Insurance companies can now own banks and other financial institutions as well as real estate devlopment. Insurers should be limited to the business of insurance. There are a few insurers who deal honestly and fairly with claims and they can and do make large profits. There is no reason that legitimate claims can't be paid by insurers. It is the greed and lack of federal legislation that allows and promotes the practice of cheating insureds, claimants and policyholders. The McCarran-Ferguson federal law actually prevents the US government from investigating so-called insurer fraud. Claimant fraud is illegal under state and federal law, but insurer fraud (denying, delaying, minimizing, low-balling legitimate claims) is NOT illegal.
