It was right about 2 PM and I was walking out of Barns & Noble by DeZavala and I-10 in San Antonio when three young men in a brand new white Mercury Mountaineer with Nevada license plates asked if I was interested in a home theatre system. I wasn't really but played along.

One kid, Taylor, opened the back of Mountaineer and showed me two unopened boxes with full home theatres in them. The story was that they worked for "Southwest Audio" in Austin and they were in San Antonio to pick up these speakers. They were only supposed to pick up one box but the shippers gave them two. They were trying to sell the extra one because "my boss will just take it home."

Although it all sounded suspicious, the boxes were brand new with a printed price of "$1999.00" slapped across the top and were from a company called "Theater Research." (It was model TR 5210). It all looked good. I told them that I wasn't interested but they insisted and I offered $200. They wanted $400 and I said no and started to walk away. One guy inside the car said, "Forget about it, just do it."

They asked what bank I had and I said Bank of America. They wanted to follow me there but I wouldn't let them. They also asked for some beer money. I said, ok and went to an ATM and took out the $. I gave it to them and drove off happy. It wasn't until I called my brother in El Paso to tell him about my great deal that he informed me that this scam had been reported in El Paso on the news. I searched for the company online and it led me to this web site.

"Taylor" told me he was a student at UT and I got his cell # so we could "hang out" some time. The cell # actually worked and the voice mail said, "this is Taylor." I called 3 times and didn't get an answer or a call back so I called the Police. The speaker's work but undoubtedly not worth what I paid.
