Thrifty car renters be warned! Thrifty car rental is working very hard to damage or destroy Florida's image as a tourist
destination. Especially to turn off visitors who visit that state or rent a car in Florida  for the first time. The now almost invisible all-electronic, no-cash-tolling, no cash pay-boths system appears to be designed as a cash extortion scam.

The so called 'open toll roads' are a trap for car drivers onto these invisible toll road traps to set them up for extortion of the worst kind by the likes of Thrifty. How could the government or state of Florida sink so low to the level of gangsterism. Or is the entire system a brain-child of the infamous Florida Mafia???

In August my son rented a car from Thrifty at the Miami airport. He had paid every toll with cash at the respective, visible toll booths. 5 and 6 weeks after he returned the car and had paid everything with his credit card  he received three letters from Thrifty  telling him that they had received toll charges  for $0.75 and $1.00 and another $1.00. Thrifty did not bother to mention by which authority or by whom or to whom one could turn.

For each of the above mentioned toll charges Thrifty is extorting $25.00 additional administration fee, i.e. an outrageous total of $75.00 for $2.75 toll fees. Without any prior notification the Thrifty Thieves charge their extortion to the credit card account

This is much much more than any usurping money lender is allowed to charge. Any decent company or enterprise would notify their customers who certainly have paid up their bills until they returned the cars of any outstanding charges. Not this very Thrifty company of thieves. Since the renter's credit card number is on file with the extortionist Thrifty company, they can milk their customers as they please.

When calling the 888-number given on their after-the -fact letter one gets to hear only prepared and rehearsed excuses, read of a computer monitor, to justify this system of almost criminal cooperation between the car rental company and the state sanctioned toll collecting enterprise. At the least this money grab is totally unethical if not illegal.

And it pisses off thousands of visitors (as you can easily find out via Google and on this webpage http://www.ripoffreport.com/ I hope and wish sincerely that Florida will soon come to its senses and realize that this scheme is doing more damage to the image and to the economy of the state than it returns in extortion money. No car renter will ever rent a car again from such a 'thrifty' company after being burned so badly.

Ripoff always stays a Ripoff

Hello Jim

Thanks for your comment , which is proof to me that at least one person has read my sourkraut.

If you look and read through the numerous complaints about Thrifty's ripoff practice, you know what I meant.  I have talked with 'snowgeese' who had been to Florida and who confirmed what my son experienced. The 'cashless open toll roads' may not look alike throughout Florida (yet).

My son even made the mistake to turn around in an attempt to get off a stretch once he supected that he had driven into one of these open traps.

If Thrifty were a decent and not a greedy enterprise, they would consolidate the minute toll charges of $0.75 + 1.00 + 1.00 and apply their greedy fingers only once instead of three times when charging the customer's credit card.

Besides, of all the different car rental outfits in Florida, Thrifty appears to be the winner of the Greed Crown.

In Florida, any "Toll By Plate" toll roads are VERY CLEARLY marked, in advance of the driver getting on that section of toll road.

Either your son needs glasses  or he felt he could get away without paying a toll because there was no toll booth.

Sorry, there's no great big conspiracy to get you!
