I believe that Tire Plus Overcharges for it's Parts to pad the invoices to it's customers. I have recently had two repairs done to the same car at the same Tires Plus Shop that have led me to believe that anyone dealing with them is going to get a very raw and overpriced surprise. What follows is one of them:

See my other reportthat follows this one....

I was out of state when my wife's car stopped running at an intersection on the way home from shopping. She had my daughter in the car as well. Upon recieving her cell phone call that day, she described the symptoms as being no electricity anywhere (no lights, would not start and the seat belt dinging stopped). I said it sounds like a dead battery. After towing it home via AAA, which took an hour of horns beeping at her (she got stuck in a left turn lane) and people (drivers) yelling about putting the hazard lights on, I had my neighbor put my battery charger on the battery. About 2 hours later, the car started and ran fine. We discovered much later that the idot light about the voltage of the battery was burned out.

So, my wife drove the car to Tires Plus on Saturday afternoon for repairs. I had guessed beforehand that the alternator had gone bad. When the she got there, they mentioned that they were very busy and may not get to it, today.

My wife called that night to see if she could pick it up and they said to come tommorrow as they had the car on the rack and needed to get the right alternator. It would just have to wait until tommorrow.

My wife picked the car up on Sunday at around Noon, the bill was for $345.00.

I became very angry at this and asked my wife to go and get the bad part(s). She did and they said "NO" as they needed to turn the old alternator back in the supplier. (What they relly meant was to get the core charge back from wherever they got the alternator). My wife does not get involved with any thing on cars, as I take care of the vehicles entirely, so she didn't say anything and left.

When I got back from my trip, I visited Tires Plus to comment about waaranty. I wanted to know what kind of warranty there was on the alternator, because who knows when something like that might break down again ?

They said it's a lifetime warranty and all I had to do was come to a Tires Plus Store and they would honor that warranty. I said, If it fails somewhere far away from a Tires Plus store, I may elect to have it repaired else where. I mean the towing bill may exceed the cost of a new alternator. I asked who supplied the alternator so I could get the warranty from them. Pep Boys are nation wide and most repair shops use them. They still denied giving me the supplier's name or the warranty. What they did say was this "No problem finding a Tires Plus shop, because we are nation wide and any Firestone Tire (repair) shop would take care of me. Firestone owns Tires Plus".

Now I understand why the change in thier business practice. I had dealt with this location before (Olsen Tires) without any problems. Could it be that since the chain has become Tires Plus under the Firestone umbrella, that the business practices have changed ?

Anyway, I shopped around for an alternator, there were plenty of different prices and warranties, and Car Quest was the best price of $104.10 without the core. Tires Plus price was $239.99 a difference of $135.89. And they got the core (average core price was $65.00. So they made $135.89 plus $65.00 or $200.89 on and overpriced alternator.

Now this part I can't figure out, I talked with the mechanic about why they couldn't get the alternator and had to keep the car overnight. He said they had the alternator installed but they had to put the exhaust pipe back on, that was why it was still on the rack on Sunday morning.

I checked with Chrysler to find out if changing the alternator on my vehicle meant that the exhaust pipe had to come off. They laughed and said what are talking about ?? Of couse not they exclaimed.

Besides that, If the Exhaust pipe did have to come off. This could be done very, very quickly by fastening two nuts and bolts. I can't understand why they didn't finish the car Saturday and give my wife the car back. Did the people have to leave a 4:45PM sharp or did they break something and had to recover in order to look good ??

So, I figure they owe me big time, Extra labor for exhaust pipe that didn't have to be removed and over charging the part cost.

An Alternator cost $104.10 plus 1 hour labor equals about $170.00
They charged me $345.00, so the overcharge was about $175.00.

Now comes the relly good part, about one week before this, the same car has had a repair by Tires Plus. I wonder if they didn't break the alternator so I would come back ?? See the other Orlando ripoff

If you went into Charlies Steak House, you would pay around $30 for a steak that you could buy at Publix for about $3.   I bet you couldnt cook it as good though.    The steak didnt cost them $30, but that would be ok with you right????

If you have any mechanical knowledge you should have put on the alternator yourself.

If you wanted to get the part at the discounted rate from a parts supplier you should have done it yourself. Its the same as buying a $30 cake from a bakery when you could of bought the stuff yourself for $5... Second, they dont profit from a core charge... they are charged for a core from the part store and then get the money back when they return the bad part. Professional shop tools are not cheap... the racks, the compressors, the snapon tools... the stuff is not cheap... The only somewhat valid point you have is the fact they kept it over night.

But then again they told you they were busy and they might not get to it... Whats to say that they didnt already tell 10 people they would have there cars done that day... maybe the guys were there till 10pm working on cars that WERE promised done that day... Did you happend to get a quote from the dealer for that same repair???? Im going to say no... because if you had.. you would probably be thinking you got a hell of a deal.

WOW A COMPANY MADE PROFIT!!

AUTHOR: Cupler2 - (U.S.A.)

I am a manager of a shop and we all mark-up parts. Usualy about 2.25 times our cost. This usually amounts to about 50% above retail. Plus, we all charge labor, anywhere from $79 to $90 per hour. We have hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment to pay for and techs that make $20 plus per hour (for a good one). So I think it is acceptable for us to make some money. You are just a cheap skate that wants everything done cheap and quick! Think if your job did all work at cost or for little mark up, could they really afford to pay your salary? NO they have to pay rent too and all of the overhead. Think before you complain!

It doesn't surprise me at all

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, December 01, 2007

Florida is the ONLY place on this planet where the average consumer thinks mechanics should work for FREE. Even the employers think this way.

Then, when the car doesn't get fixed the first time, the consumer is astonished.

I actually had a customer tell me that my $60/hour was too much because TP charged $80/hour and had 10 employees, while I only had 2. Get it? She figured $80/hour was a good deal because it meant everyone got $8/hour. My $60/hour meant my mechanic and I were getting $30 each. IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!

I spent half of every day explaining why I wouldn't work for FREE, and still pulled down $100K for myself. Now, I just open the doors and a more intelligent clientelle hands me their money.

There is a reason I coined the term "FLORIDIOT".

To start this I would have to agree with the last rebutal Techs are not cheap nor free. I graduted from college and have worked at tires plus the whole time they have paid for 10K of my tools and my tuiton. I have worked at several stores under hundreds of managers they are good people.

This is about money 345 isnt bad for an alternator if you dont like the price say no do it yourself. do you think that them charging you cost is going to pay me?? What about my 200 a week tool payment for the 75K in tools that I have to do this job.

You wernt ripped of you have to pay to keep your car running as far as intentionally breaking an alternator I dont see how or why they would I have people turn me down all day I dont care because there is always somones car in line that needs fixed get a clue on the real world no ripoff just business.

Mark ups are how ALL companies make profit.

AUTHOR: Art - (U.S.A.)

If they sold it for cost they would not stay in business long! Any one can buy it at Pep Boys/NAPA/ect ect for say 150.00/find someone to install it correctly/pay them nothing/and make a profit! COMMON SENSE,,,,,,,,high tech mechanics take high tech tools and high tech educations, stores do not pay for this!

Some cars DO require additional labor for alts/cv axles have to be removed-exhausts dropped/ect. and sometimes removing 2 exhaust bolts may require extra labor for they may be frozen/rusted siezed/need drilled out! DO YOU QUESTION YOUR DENTIST OR DOCTOR ABOUT HIS PROCEDURES????sounds to me you need YOUR dealer mechanic to repair your vehicle for $500 for an alt/300.00 labor and they must schedule it 5 days from now and keep it 7 days!

P.S. I was a manager at tires plus/at firestone/Bridgestone in akron and dayton ohio and with wal-mart auto centers and i have a degree in Computer Engineering and HAVE common sense! Dealing with people as yourself is what causes auto managers frustration. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAY NO!
